i loved the way martin hannett recorded the elevator and lift gate! when the gate opens it's as if ian took the elevator up and sings moments later. timeless!!!
@CLVASHJBHWFS It should be the other way around. Joy division was before New order. You should be able to hear the Joy division in the New order songs.
Thinking about this band for several years. Still don't know what to think about them. I don't even know if i "like" it, i just feel it. That's all I know.
One of the things I always forget when I listen to Joy Division is that Ian was only 23 when he took his own life and even younger when he wrote all this clever, brilliant music.
@MrDerbi37 Apparently the only reason Muhammad unified the Saudi Peninsula was because one day he heard this CD being listened to by some silk-trader, and the shit was so good he went crazy after the guy left town, and so he spent the rest of his life looking for him and that CD.
that's part of the beauty of it. If everyone appreciated it that would mean Hitler liked it too, and Osama Bin Laden. I don't want to share the same musical tastes with those guys. No way. If I found out Osama Bin Laden was listening to Joy Division when his compound was raided, I don't know how I would deal with that. It would be weird.
@crushsatan Do you always trust in what your "leaders" say about other men? Whenever I hear someone talking shit about Hitler, they always turn out to be ignorant on WWII.
Hmmmm. I will think about that. It is unfortunate to me, to be more specific, that I share the same taste with people who, if not "evil", would never give me the time of day, or a glass of water if I was dying of thirst.
@crushsatan Things can be savoured with equal passion for wholly different ends. A masterwork may imbue similar feelings of awe and rapture, owing to the nature of the object itself, but how it is interpreted is the work of the appreciative subject and depends on their state of mind.
Think of what the works of Shakespeare meant for Adolph Hitler and Winston Churchill. Both men had a superficially legitimate claim for inspiration, but for completely divergent purposes.
Im so glad be say that Interpol sounds like Joy Division, if not, i'd probably never hear of these guys. It's a shame how I had to hear it off a comment, Joy Division should be playing on every radio and TV...these guys are (easily) one of the best!
@ReeceHughesRocks Somewhere on here there's a dreadful heavy metal band covering Shoplifters of the World by the Smiths and some kid has commented on the video something like "Is this a cover because I tried finding another version of it and all I could find was a clip of some English fags from the '80's doing a really lame version." It's frightening, I'm sure I was more open minded when I was a kid.
@jacob7207 New Order carried the torch after Ian's suicide, they have some really amazing music. Just listen to the double album New Order Substance and you will see what I mean.
@aperturesandfstops Oh let him be. If he doesn't feel like listening to music he doesn't know, its his loss. I do agree that New Order did a damn good job at at least making themselves different after the name change.
Oh thank Providence, I found it! The most (to me) moving rendition of this I've heard was on that bootleg sometimes rather distastefully labelled 'Stroseck's Last Stand' - JD fans will know the significance of that reference.
@chakadoodledoo The very evening/early morning, I believe. People think of Curtis as being a chronically depressed guy - and he was clearly troubled to remove that voice and wonderfully un- self-conscious stage presence from Earth - but the rest of the band were shocked cuz he didn't act like a seriously sad person. Maybe there's a message in that, I don't know, but I'm heartened that we have the music! JD just like some of the best bands/composers dealt with deep stuff but the music triumphed.
This song reminds me of my sons, my childhood, and my parents. I guess that is the genius of this song, Expression of the circular pattern that is life and death.
Guess ya dreams always end, they rise up just descend, but I don't care anymore, I've lost the will to want more. I'm not afraid not at all. I watch them all as they fall, but I remember when we were young! POWERFUL STUFF

Well even evil people, or people simply perceived to be 'evil', can have apt aesthetic judgment.
Though ultimately morality and aesthetics converge.
