Does anyone know where there is a recording of this gig? There used to be a video of 'Stardust' on YouTube' but it's gone now! It was my favorite video and i've been looking for it ever since! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you cyberjaz for posting this great artist, who puts himself out there at every show he does (performs), he leaves it all out there on the stage, and appears most gracious to the musicians, who help make his shows possible. I will be looking for him to perform in LA. Thank you again.
I just want to respond to perezbermuda. WELL SAID. I swear that American Idol is making Americans tone deaf. Elling is not only a great artist, but a great entertainer.
One of the most amazing versions of this song. Kurt Elling simply rules! What a voice, what a performance, and a damn amazing drums solo! Damn, this one moves me from the inside.
Am I understanding this right? Casey Abrams was a contestant on American Idol? Oh I get it..the point is to get me to listen Casey Abrams right? Alright I'll bite.
No fuckin thanks for a old singer he sings like a fuckin slut Natt king cole is the best take your fuckin loopy prostitute voice which is flawed and gtfo bitch.
@BrokenTHGurl08 i thought the same thing. he's prob the best male jazz singer these last ten or so years. he sounds soulful and full of feeling and nuance. we thought he was black because he's got flavor.
Casey did alright but come on Kurt Elling is the Shit. @ pereznbermuda are you deaf? Granted this performance could be better but its a jazz song performed by a symphony. You want to hear about working with symphonies? Go read Frank Zappa's Biography. I bet you get Kurt with a sextet or septet and it will blow the socks off anything that comes out of that crap tv show (yes I know, my bias is showing, but I don't care)
@LesterBricks sorry guys, heard it again (with my hearing aid this time! LOL) and i just hate Kurt's version. Nothing i can do about it, wish i could like it but can't. Love his voice but just not his rendition. And yet, Casey Abrams is a better version in my opinion, it captures the essence of the song and love his inventive phrasing. Different taste for different people, that's what makes the world go round!
I stumbled into this a couple of years ago while researching Nat King Cole songs, and whilst Nat will always remain untouchable, Kurt Elling singing this changed how I thought about vocal performances, having never really been exposed to Jazz singing of any quality. I must have played this performance hundreds of times and it's one of my favorite - Kurt Elling is a massive talent whom I have never been fortunate enough to be within travelling distance of. A genuine master. Thanks, Kurt.
There's bit of it that i REALLY like but overall this is waaaay to affected and disjointed, so verdict is not a great version. Although the second part after 2:30 is far superior as the first part. Casey Abrams does a far better job, he's the guy to watch, he brings this song to another level.
@perezbermuda Casey Abrams? Talk about affected! Listen to the way he murders the end of each line with that scratchy "ah." If anyone deserves the gold medal for this song, it should be the original: Nat King Cole.
@perezbermuda: Kurt Elling is considered to be the best living male jazz singer in the world and yet you've said you prefer the version of an American Idol contestant? A jazz singer uses their voice like it's a musical instrument, interpreting pieces of music in new improvisational ways. It's fine to not like jazz if that's your preference. But there's surely no comparison in quality between this and some young kid who's entered a TV talent contest.
@PoliticsandPower: I think it's wrong to express an opinion that can't be backed up by facts and a logical argument. Please visit Kurt Elling's website to see the number of accolades he's won regarding his status as being the best living male jazz singer. Unless you're disagreeing with my definition of what a jazz singer is? If so then why not offer an alternative definition, rather than just be judgemental.
@perezbermuda bwahahaha funny joke man. i mean, you're entitled to like the lesser version i guess, but come on man. Kurt is a once in a century musical phenomenon. Kobie Watkins journeys to a completely different universe in that solo. Jeez man, the whole Sydney Symphony Orchestra accompanied these guys, and you mean to tell me that some guy who lost American Idol plays a better version? That is truly a funny joke.
@beetleboy2 Dude, chill. This version, Cole's version, and Casey Abrams versions are my fav. I just really like this song to have sparse instruments and a creepy presence. But this version is badass too.
Kurt Elling Brillante, el cantante de Jazz más importante en la actualidad. Un abrazo desde El Salvador, a los amantes del genero más extraordinario de la musica. Felicidades.

@phoebecatgirl I heavily agree, professional musicians probably understand this piece much better and appreciate it on a whole different level than regular guys
For the ones who think that classical musicians are unimpressed, check out the orchestra´s conductor (left of the screen) from 5:13 onwards, he even grabs his head in disbelief!!! Good music is good music, regardless of genre!! BTW this is not good it is just out of this world.

Man!!! He was going for that last high note at the end and the conductor just left him with his &*%# hanging out by cutting off the group right when he hit the note! I swear I saw Kurt give a millisecond dirty look at the very last few frames of this clip.

@jazzperson55 The Catalina Jazz Club is one hell of a venue. They always have GREAT groups playing there. I saw the North Texas One O' Clock Lab Band there, they blew my mind.
This rendition of Nature Boy fucking rocks! The drummer is stupid good, Lawrence Hobgood on piano is the shizzle, I even like the double bass playing behind Kurt, all in all amazing start to stop. Another amazing rendition from Kurt is my foolish heart, very original in it's interpretation. 5 stars.
@TheDukecalvin Poppycock. I LOVE Bobby McFerrin, and Kurt Elling still amazes me. Maybe you've never heard Kurt sing My Foolish Heart. Stellar masterpiece. Actually, I just watched the video again, and I posted that I'd love to see Elling and McFerrin work together. Anyways, you're inventing a competition that doesn't exist. Two different musicians with two different styles. Why make needless favorites? Just enjoy them both.
The lyric changes, although sort of minor, really annoyed me. This is one of the few songs that no matter how hard I look I have yet to find a cover that I enjoy.
Recommended by a friend, I looked Mr. Elling up at the Internet. This is my first time seeing and hearing this gentleman. (Nature Boy is a song my mom sang to me over 60 years ago. I'm not crazy for that odd, mouth thing he does during the slower tempo. It looks too contrived, especially since I didn't see happen when singing he's up tempo and doing skat! (And his scat is super!!)
i love how the string section in the background is soo bored :D

quite good, but when you've heard bobby mcferrin, nothing really touches you that much anymore...

Most of the classical musicians look a bit snobby and unimpressed...they probably don't understand. :P

@enakrium They're probably just bored. I'm sure they must've heard this song a gajillian times during rehearsal.
