  • Thank you for sharing your experience with therapy. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, and would be very pleased if one of my students prepared a speech as you have done. Vicky

  • @Mralligator19 Cheers:-)

  • does anyone else feel your speech is sometimes "qued". like you can only fluently talk as soon as someone looks at you or you walk into a room etc. wondering if anyone felt the same way.

  • @MercMaster101 I don't know if anyone else feels like that, but there have definately been times when I've been in discussions with friends &/or colleagues & have literally, deliberately, thought about what I was going to say at a given time & then went ahead & said it. Sometimes blurting it out (unfortunately), & at other times saying it in a more controlled, deliberate manner.

    Cheers for watching...Jon.

  • god bless bro

  • @HImynameis303 Cheers:)

  • Hello, just found this video. I'm another English bloke who stuttters, I've done years of speech therapy (when I was younger), I've also tried Starfish and Del Ferro in Holland, feel free to email me. You're braver than me mate, I should get my act together and do a video. So much of my time I feel stranded alone with this problem, and it is the biggest problem ever, to us at least. Anyway, glad I found your video.

  • @touchy858 Cheers:) Doing these videos has certainly help me come out of my shell a little bit. Thanks for watching...Jon.

  • forget speech therapy mate, it will do you no good... find your own way... I found these videos by mort cooper "the game of stuttering" to be very accurate... I just dont believe that therapy will do any good, and if anything it will make you worse. Good luck though, ive got a bad stutter too, did therapy spent thousands and learning more by myself. peace

  • @Queeg500RD Cheers mate. I've never heard of those videos before but I'll check them out. Since doing this vid my views on traditional speech therapy have altered somewhat. I still think that it can be of some help to people but, as far as my own speech is concerned, I'm just trying to accept that my stutter is always going to be there in some shape or form & in doing that I think I'm handling the whole thing a lot better than I was.

    Thanks again...Jon.

  • @jonboy002 your welcome buddy. I just accidentally came across them too, think i typed stuttering cured in the search bar. Would be great to know what you think. I did some speech practice today (from courses i have been on) and hopefully will watch his videos again, let me know how it goes, Rodge

  • Hey, great video, if the topic of the video hadn't been Speech Therapy and your stutter, I wouldn't have even noticed that you had one!! Having said that, it is great that you are targeting a problem that you notice and one that prevents you from wanting to speak . You have a lovely voice and should talk more :) x

  • Thanks for that! :)

I don't think my stutter is as bad in this video as it is in some of my others. Regardless of my stuttering I really enjoyed making this video & I'm blown away by the response it's gotten!

Thanks for watching, & for the comments! All the best...Jon.

  • good luck mate

  • Cheers mate!

  • heyyy....i also have a severe stammering problem....please tell me how to go about it.....how to get rid of this.

  • My apologies for the late reply.

As far as I know there is no actual cure for stammering. The best we can do at the moment is manage it with different techniques. The best thing that I can suggest is check out the websites I've listed in the video information & hopefully you'll be able to get some useful information from those. I'm sorry I coludn't help more, thanks for watching...Jon.

  • good for you :) i'm in school to become a speech-language pathologist, so i'm happy for you to be getting therapy :)

  • Cheers! Wishing you every success with your studies...Jon.

  • Good luck with the Therapy mate!

  • Kudos for the courage to post this video. I have a mild stutter, but it doesn't get to me too much. However, I have a movement disorder and dysarythia associate with it which affects how I speak sometimes. So, in that regard I can relate to the self consciousness. Good luck in your efforts and keep smiling.

  • Cheers! :)

  • Glad to here that your finding therapy useful.

I need speech therapy for a different reason. I talk super fast only understandable to people i know, and even faster to strangers, and to make matters worse i sometimes have a slight stutter. people would say i sound like a jungle music rapper.

I was wandering what steps did you take to get the therapy?

congratulations on the therapy it really does give me hope to hear its going well.

  • I am late finding your videos, so I apologize. I am actually going to school to be a Speech Therapist in the States, and thank you for posting these videos. I have some catching up to do! You are quite charming, too.

I hope you are doing great since this was in 2008! :o)

  • As far as the speech therapy support group thing goes I'm doing very well thanks:o)...your smiley faces are better than mine!(lol)

Good luck with your studies, best wishes...Jon.

  • I enjoyed your video. Great job. I am a speech pathologist in Tennessee. I don't have a lot of experience working with people who stutter, but I do have some. Speech tx can't cure stuttering, but you can learn techniques to make it less severe and less frequent. This will require a lot of work and dedication. You will learn to monitor your speech carefully to know when to use each technique. It is all about learning the "tools" and when to use them. How is your therapy progressing? Good luck.

  • Thanks:)

As far as techniques & tools go, I know about proper breathing, maintaining eye contact & word replacing...am I correct in classing word replacing as a tool?

...I realise those probably aren't the only tools & techniques but they're the ones I've had the most experience with.

I try not to word replace anymore, I'm more concerned with trying to say exactly what I'm thinking when I talk, although there are still times:)

    (t.b.c)

  • (cont)

I've found breathing techniques quite useful!...I trip myself up sometimes when I forget to try & maintain it though:)

Maintaining eye contact has also been helpful, it not only helps me focus on what I'm saying but makes whoever I'm talking to do the same:)

...The therapy's going well thanks! I'm actually part of a group now. Our therapist has gone on maternity leave but the group still meets once every two weeks, I enjoy it:)

Thanks for watching & the great comments...Jon.

  • I've seen three different speech therapists but none of them could really help me. (I have a very bad lisp and people can never understand what I say).

  • I'm sorry to hear that mate, cheers for watching...Jon.

  • Congrats on making this video!

  • Cheers! :)

  • one day i woke up.. and i could speak PERFECTLY.. no stutter or anything.. i was talking all day long.. the feeling u get is unimaginable, its as if i had mount everest lifted off my chest.

The following day, i lost my voice, and i stutter 3 times as much.. it was as if a part of me died when i saw that.

  • In my mid teens there was a period of about a month when my speech was very fluent. I'm not sure what the reason for this was, & it obviously didn't last, but it certainly felt good:)

I'm sorry to hear your stutter is giving you so much trouble. Thanks for sharing, best wishes...Jon.

  • @jonboy002 hey thanks alot.. didnt really expect anyone to read it haha, well im 16, never once have a had a normal day of speaking except for that one.

    thanks for listening.

    best regards

  • Most people who stutter have periods of relative fluent speech. I found that by "remembering" how that fluent speech felt, what mood I was in, how I carried myself, that helped me extend those periods of fluent speech. Everyone is different, of course, so you will have to discover "your" own method. Good luck to you.

  • Cheers!:)

I'm sorry to hear you were given such a hard time when you went to school. I hate bullies!

...I don't remember ever really getting a great deal of hassle from people about my speech when I was at school. I think part of the reason for that was due to being an Army brat. Even though we did a fair share of moving around, it was always with the same group of people so, even in a new school there was always people around me that I had known for years.

    (t.b.c)

  • (cont)

I think that sense of familiarity helped a great deal.

I used to worry about my stutter a great deal. I used to let it dictate how I used to act, but since coming onto YouTube & hearing other people points of view on the matter I've starting to learn that it's only as debilitating as I let it be.

Many thanks for watching & for your great comments. All the best...Jon.

  • Jon, I am a speech-pathologist in the USA who works primarily with children.

I stuttered myself until I was about 15 or 16 and still get hung up on words occasionally. I want to commend you on your pursuit of more fluent speech. In my own case, I was teased and bullied by some boys in school. They liked to mock my speech. One day, I had had enough. I stood up for myself. From that point on, I stopped worrying about my speech and just decided to be "myself".

  • Thanks :D, o yeah, came back to tell you, that I found out , the more comfortable you are with people the less stuttering u'll have,This is an excellent step! but try to do little things like talking to strangers, or joining social clubs whenever possible. Hope this helps,:D

and do let me know if anything changes, it will be useful to my paper. All the best!

  • Will do!:)

...With regard to the social club/meeting new people thing, since last year I've been going to kick boxing classes & interacting with a whole new group of people there.

I realise kickboxing classes aren't exactly a social club:)..but I do believe that getting to meet a whole bunch of new people helps me feel a bit more relaxed, a bit more confident, in new situations.

    Thanks again...Jon.

  • wow, awsome! ive been researching alot about speech therapy aswell for my psychology research paper,I found that if you change the tone in your voice and change how you generally pronounce the words -you accent- your stutter can get better- also calming the nerves, however im not sure how useful is that. what do you think?

  • My brother did point out that I was talking a bit softer in this video which, while accidental did seem to have an effect on my stutter, you could be onto something.

As for staying calm I definately think that could help me with my stutter. I've found that when I build up to say something & the worry &/or nerves kick in, I do tend to stutter more. Learning some relaxation techniques might help me out.

Thanks for watching & commenting, & good luck with your paper! All the best...Jon.

  • good vid bro, i noticed you are talking a bit softer then normal, is that a technique or just how u speak on your videos??

Your stutter has gotten alot better little brother, proud of you man

    love you

    Joey

  • The softer tone in my voice was just how I happen to be talking in this particular video.

..Cheers bro!..coming form you that means alot, seriously.

    Love ya back

    Jon.

  • i dont see any problems wit your speech

  • My stutter wasn't as bad in this vid as it has been in others. My speech can be quite fluent at times, but then my stutter can just kicks in without much, if any warning,

    Cheers for watching...Jon.

  • Good video, jonboy002. Sorry I had not caught up with you earlier! And I agree with what you say below to usmannaqshbandi - but I would add that it is highly unlikely that his stammer has anything to do with his tonsils and adenoids surgery.

  • Cheers!...I came across your vids a while ago, great stuff!

With regard to usmannaqshbandi's comment, I'd never heard of that myself but hopefully a speech therapist/pathologist will be able to give him more help than I can.

    Thanks again, all the best...Jon.

  • i had a tonsils and adenoid surgery when i was 5 n eversince i have been stammering....it has been a major pain in the butt n i was jus wondering if u cud tell me whether i has something to do wih the surgery or not?..thanx

  • I've never had any kind of tonsil or adenoid surgery so I'm afraid I couldn't say. My best advice there would be to consult a doctor, who would have more experience on the subject matter.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, best wishes...Jon.

  • I'm gonna have to take speech therapy too. I've been speech impaired all my life.

  • Me too...or at least for as long as I can remember. The speech therapy is definately helping!

My therapist recently got in touch to say that she'd gotten some encouraging responses from people regarding the setting up of a local support group.

It looks like we're going to all meet up within the next couple of months..I'm looking forward to it!

Cheers for watching & taking the time to comment. It's much apreciated!

I hope your own speech therapy goes well. All the best....Jon.

  • How did therapy? This is great keep it up!

  • My speech therapy's going well thanks!

My next appointment's on the 14th of April, because I'm doing the whole self help thing I see my therapist every 1-2 months.

When there we update each other on what's been happening since last time & also bounce ideas off one another on what else I can do.

My speech therapist is great & I get a lot from our sessions. All the best...Jon.

    P.S. Thanks for subscribing!

  • im going to begin speech therapy

    did it help u?

  • It really did, & continues too!....since making this video though I've come to realise, with the help of other stutterers & Channels such as StutterTalk, that as big of a pain in the butt as my stutter can be, it's not the huge road block that I once thought it was.

This realization has started to help make communicating with people that much easier.

Thanks for watching, wishing you every success with your speech therapy....Jon.

  • he makes me cry every time, wish my lovely mum did not have dementia ,she used to have me sitting next to her on the seetee giving me a hug every time my dad makes me cry

  • my dad mocked my stammer today

  • Hello Sookie....I'm sorry to hear that your dad's been mocking your stammer, my dad used to get frustated with my stutter at times.

I used to tell him that it wasn't like a switch I could just turn off...he thought it was of course!

He sometimes used to say "it's all up here" (while he pointed at his head)....not exactly a revelation!...even though I've heard a stammer isn't just a physcological thing.

    (t.b.c)

If you ever want to talk, I'm on YouTube most days, leave a comment on my main page or better yet drop me an e-mail. It's good to talk.....I know.

    Best wishes to you Sookie...Jon.

  • Hey Man !!!!!!! First of all thanks for posting the video. I suffer from the same and I know the difficulties we go through. I would like to share some tips with you which I learnt from public speaking course like to speak as slowly as possible then speak in loud voice like sing a song or read a paragraph as if u r speaking in front of large crowd and helps.and..if you have any suggestions for me they are welcome.

  • Cheers for the tips! I've heard of people who, when speaking have basically sung (in their minds) what they were going to say & that helped them with their fluency.

I have tried speaking more slowly in the past & that did help.

As far as suggestions go...I've heard that breathing excerises can be quote beneficial, although I'm afraid I haven't had any real experience with them. (cont)

  • (cont)

What's helped me the most recently is the process of self acceptance. Although I do want to become more fluent, what I've recently come to realise is that accepting the fact that my stutter will always be a part of my life is just as important as any fluency techniques.

This realisation has started to help me come to terms with my stutter...it's a part of my life, but no longer such a controlling factor.

    (cont)

  • (cont)

YouTube channels such as StutterTalk have helped me a lot with the issue of self acceptance, as well as keeping in touch with other people on YouTube who stutter. It's all helped, & continues to help a great deal!

Which ever route you chose I wish you nothing but the best...Jon.

  • Hi Jon just wanted to give you respect for what your doing. all the best D.C xx

  • Much appreciated, cheers! Best wishes...Jon.

    P.S.Thanks for subscribing!

  • Well done mate.

I attend the McGuire programme here in Ireland

    Keep up the hard work!

  • Will do, cheers!...I've heard some good things about the McGuire programme. Wishing you every success....Jon.

  • I just wanna tell you how brave I think you are mate.

I have a pretty bad stammer too, and could never see myself making a youtube video for everyone to see.

Good luck with your therapy. I hope you get the results you're hoping for.

  • Thanks mate, much appreciated!....regarding your stammer, have you ever had speech therapy yourself, if so what's your opinion of it?

  • I made a spelling error in the last comment, "so if u want to pick up speed take 4 cod liver oil 1000c per day every 4 hours."

this will begin healing ur brain neurons for better faster connections, u can always google if you don't believe me :)

    every little helps :)

also reading, that helps, because even if ur not speaking it ur reading it and by reading it will imprint into ur mind the sentences and words that u will say out loud.

I used to go weeks/months without talking (a mute)

  • Hi there! Thanks for all your comments their much appreciated.

Regarding your comment on stuttering when we take notice of our own speech, I've got to agree with you on that one! Their have been so many times when I've been talking fluently & then when I take notice of my own voice, my stutter kicks in!

I've never thought about just recording myself rambling as a means to control my stutter before, I'll definately try it, cheers!......

  • (cont)

I've never heard of the benefits of higher doses of cod liver oil as a means to help with your stutter, but I will look it up, thanks again!......Jon.

  • one way to solve ur stutter is to just begin talking, ur mind at the moment is so used to noticing ur voice it gets jolts allot, so get ur fone if it has recording on there and talk in ur fone, just ramble in there and soon you'll find that talking rambles will become a habit for ur brain to make the association needed for continuous speech.

so if you want to pick up speed take 4 cod liver oil 1000c per day every 4 days.

Smile and you will be happy, Speak and you will light up the room.

  • when I was young I had a stutter, and even to this day I stutter, though what I've learnt to do is smile :) and nod myhead and make sounds of understanding :) its funny how stuttering isn't affected by confidence, its when out brain gets in the way of our talking, because when were in the flow, we dont have a stutter though when we become aware of our voice we start to stutter :)

I hope you do well with your speech therapist, I also went, its like going back to primary school.

  • Good on you, buddy. Will be following your progress. There is another approach to this. I'll PM you.

  • Thanks Simon! Cheers for StutterTalk's web address, I'll be sure to check out their site & their vlogs on YouTube! Best wishes....Jon.

    P.S.Thanks for subscribing, much appreciated!

  • Good, luck with your therapy. Your stutter is not bad, sounds average, but I suppose in your mind, you think it's worse. My uncle had a really bad stutter, (took him minutes to get the first syllable of a word), but he got it under control by slowing down his speech and being more relaxed. He only stutters when nervous or excited now.

  • I used to be like that myself, it used to take me so long & took so much effort to get a word out I used to actually feel tired afterwards.

When I get nervous I do tend to stutter more, which happens the more I stutter!....thanks for the comment, best wishes to you, your uncle & all your loved ones.....Jon.

  • hey bro just wanted to say to you that I am proud that your going to speech therapy to overcome your stuttering problem I think its great your taking those special steps that you feel are necessary in your life. I hope that you doing well bro and that everything is going well for you well take care bro

  • Thanks Nick, much appreciated bro! I'm well thanks, finally working to get this monkey off my back. I hope that You & Jayla are well, best wishes......Jon.

  • Jon, I'm so Proud of you Love. I'm so sure this little road block will be far behind you in the near future. Isn't it amazing how we all for different reasons are going through transition. I join with you and virtualy hold you hand love as you get though this. I'm so here for you Love.

    Hugs...

    Sister Paula

  • Thank you Paula! coming from you that means a lot! Best wishes sis! your little brother.....Jon.

  • hey i have a friend who is in speech therapy..aswell keep up the good work man! 5 stars
