I think the picture was used to resemble what had happened to the Helicopter, which in the picture, gets struck down by King Kong. So it was kinda an abstract way of explaining why the Helicopter randomly started to fail. JUST MY TWO CENTS

In the modern one Carl Denham is greedy and captures Kong for the sake of it. In the original masterpiece, however, Carl Denham was a hero who threw the gas bomb at Kong to stop him from killing them all. Then he saw the opportunity to capture Kong, seeing as he was broke...

I think it's because of the thing u notice without real noticing it. E.g. at Spiderman 1 there is the scene, where he "transforms" and there are some flashes and some pictures of a skull-head. I didn't realise it for a long time I just felt some kind of "bgrr"... I knew there was something weird.And as I stepped it frame by frame I saw the deaths head. It's just the thing the picture make with our subconscouisness... maybe a assertion( right word here?)

But that doesn't make it ironic. If they were trying to make a movie that was nothing like King Kong and it turned out as an uncanny resemblance to Kong, then that my friend would be ironic. It's like if someone thinks that flying is the only way to go and it is the safest and they only travel that way, it is ironic when their plane crashes. Alanis Morrisette's song talks of a guy who is afraid to fly because it's not safe, plane crashes, he dies, not ironic. He thought that would happen.
