There are reasons why there are shooting seasons and licences. Seasons occur after the bubs are independent of their parents, and therefore some adults are fare game, depending on the species. Licences are needed to ensure the populations aren't depleted. That's how it works in theory anyhow. I've never held a gun, I'm not even from the UK, but I understand the rules for hunting wild game.
Soooo glad you were able to rescue the babies, poor things must have been scared out of their minds with all of that going on. It makes me so angry to hear what some thoughtless teenagers are capable of doing to living creatures.
No mate I didn't. I just walked away and came back with a video camera - obviously I reported it too - in hindsight I wish I'd have pretended to be interested in their gun and then smashed the bloody thing up. Anyway, thanks for the comment.
well done to you two for that, its horrible what those boys did are they the ones that hang out by the bridge. several times i have seen them chucking stones at the ducks and confronted them. Very brave of you to stand up to them. Hugs to both of you. maybe see you down there one day.
Oh man how sad that folks would do that. So wonderful that you saw and knew to act to save those 3. Kudos to you and to all who bother to step out of comfort to do something positive for the world i general.
Couldn't have said it better myself. The ducklings were fine in the end. We kept them for about a 7 weeks in the garden until they were fully grown and then released them ona big reservoir nearby, NOT the canal! Cheers,
Ben ur a proper hero mate ive got sum ducks myself and im 21. i actually live near there in bedfordshire. I am so disgusted in what happend there. Makes me wana Vomit! Just gotta say a big well done to you.
those kids were poaching and could give a big fine and there giveing hunters a bad name i know this cause i am a hunter but i always follow rules etc... its cool what u did cause chances are those ducklings would die
You are my hero ben. I rescuded one little ducky female 7 years ago and she lived with me 3 years before going back to her nature. That was a fantastic experience. Ducks are so cute. Animals have so many things to learn to humans.
Not quite sure. Baffled me how anyone could be that cruel, but there you are, atleast 3 made it ...and are still making it thankfully - they all turned out to be beautiful (big!) ducks. A hen and 2 drakes. Hope they survive. Cheers for the comment,
Good rescue! Airguns are a problem here in Australia too, last year I had to rescue a Goshawk (beautiful snow white raptor) wing was shattered by an air gun slug. It didn't make it. Birds have bones that can break so easy.
Good work and great video, enjoy being a mother duck?
Yep its a pretty endemic problem here too, such a tragedy. Those three turned to be great little guys (well, 2 guys and a girl actually!) and Mum released them whilst I was away. She saw them everyday for a week and they were doing great, so fingers crossed they made. Thanks again Bill,
Yer i no, i wrote the text wrong, you'reright it was the 21st april. Thanks for the comment mate, they are all neary ready to go back into the wild :) cheers,
Nice one, Ben. I hope you find the w*nkers that did this. BTW, I enjoyed your grass snake and adder videos. I do a spot of photographing UK herpetofauna, but I'm a wuss when it comes to picking up either of those species. Grin! Still, if I'm ever going to, I'd better do it soon. I'm moving to Ireland this summer, so I won't have the opportunity for much longer... :O( Who's your sidekick with the camera? They do brilliantly to keep up with you! Teresa
Haha, yer, Ireland's not too hot for snakes is it!! sounds cool tho. thankyou for your comments Teresa, I'm in California at the mo. and there's so much herpetofauna to photograph/pick up hehe, only been here for 4 days and I've already found a rattlesnake. Hopefully i can upload the vid soon, i was shaking like leaf!! but beautiful animals here. thanks again,
Hey, thankyou for your kind comment. I'd hope alot of people would do the same sort of thing but I didn't know, and I knew as soon as I saw them, they wouldn't survive if left alone. You'll be pleased to know that those 3 are doing really well now and I'll be releasing them when they grow their full, flight feathers in about 3 weeks. Cheers,
Yer, I went to go and find them and thought if I did, I'd pretend to be interested, look at the gun, and then smash it on the nearest rock or throw it in the bloody canal!
Hahaha, yep - or the police - although thats pretty unlikely. They're all doing well at home at the mo. so lucky them I guess - but yer, you're right, some sick minds out there. Cheers,
There are two types of people, scumbags and people like you. Well done your a star :-)
