Over the years on youtube I've seen clips and comments about Alex Kovalev and his sick moves and how no one can stick handle like him. I, as a Rangers fan, watched Kovavelv from the day he came into the league til the day he was traded to Pittsburgh. He's beyond frustrating to watch. He just went TWELVE GAMES without a POINT before scoring in OT on Wednesday night. Considering his talent level that statistic is "SICK".
Yeah, but as a professional he's got an obligation to try all the time. He can't take nights off. It's not fair to his teamates and to the talent he has. He's a nice person. All his Ranger teamates liked him, but he's stubborn as a mule and won't alter his game. And he's overly sensitive to criticism. He takes it the wrong way. And at this point in his career (age 37) he does not have time to make changes. He has 49 points. he ought to have at least 65 with his talent.
like ja24 said, 10 games later, playoff time, this guy is GOLD move him up a line, a PP unit, and you've got a shot at round 2 for sureee even with goalie weaknesses
How awesome can he be?!! He just went TWELVE games without a point. His last point before a goal on Wednesday was BEFORE the Olympic break, on Feb. 14th. Kovalev is getting close to 1000 points in a career but it's more on longevity than great numbers. He's only had 2 seasons where he's averaged more than a point per game. He's never learned that less is more. You don't get points for great stick handling. Half the scoring leaders today don't have his natural talent, but they're smarter.
@dzanier Kovalev has had 4 seasons where hes averaged more than a point per game, not two, and had 65 points in 69 games in 06 coming off a knee injury, so its almost 5. Just get your facts straight... Kovalev does'nt live up to his talent, but hes not as lazy as people make him out to be. When he's in his game, I mean when he plays HIS game along the boards and manages to get through everybody, he gets quite roughed up, kinda like forsberg...What im saying is that he is still playing.=/lazy
I'm really sorry I didn't get my facts straight, even though that was not the point of my entry. I never said he was lazy. I said he was stubborn. But here are the facts: 2000-2001-95pts in 79 games; 2001-2002-76pts in 67 games; 2007-2008-84pts in 82 games. Combined between the Pens and Rangers in 2002-2003 he had 77pts in 78 games, and in 2005-2006 he had 65 pts in 79 games. So he did it three times and almost two other times. Considering his natural talent though, he's a big underachiever.
@dzanier as matter of fact, in the 02-03 season, he was in the race for the scoring title with forsberg until he got trade to new-york, I think he had 64 points in 55 games at that point. He only managed 13 points in 27 games after that as he was put off the blue line on the pp, and also matched up with washed up north south players like lindros, fleury, nedved. In outline, New-york shut him down, or he was not meant to play in new-york. Kovalev was a top player in Pittsburg for 3 seasons.
I know. In fact I don't think Alex & New York were a good fit. He had too many distractions. He had his best years in Pittsburgh when he had great talent around him. Still, if you watch Alex, he can create room for himself in a second, & he has a ROCKET shot, but he doesn't shoot enough. He has all these fancy stickhandling moves which are nice to have, but are just style points. Maybe you can't make a player something he's not, but I've found him to be incapable of making the simple play.
@dzanier True, he cant go for the simple play, otherwise that wouldnt be him... He was fashionned nhler in New-york, where he should have never played in the first place, thats the most problem of his career I think.
Well he didn't have much choice since that's the team that drafted him. The things that Kovalev has never done well are things that many people, like me and you, could do. If we see there's a chance for a good shot, we shoot. It's very simple. Mike Gartner and Pat Verbeek made a career out of making the simple plays combined with talent. The inability to learn fundamentals is unacceptable. It's like knowing how do do Calculus while not knowing the letters of the alphabet.
@ja24 I know i saw habs games in playoffs hes gold thats why Ottawa got him. We knew we were making the playoffs so get an Awesome player for the playoffs.
I live in montreal, gomez earns almost twice what kovalev earned while he was in montreal and yet he doesnt get half the pressure kovalev put up with during his stay. By the way Kovalev finished first scorer of the team 3 seasons out 4, I dont understand why people criticize him, no one has ever put up high amounts of points since decades in montreal. Sens are ahead of montreal right now, what team made the most significant changes during the off-season between the two?
well people think that gomez has to be one of the best players in the nhl,but it doesnt mean that if hes one of the most paid players that he has to be one of the best.
@auggiedoggy He's still 3rd best scorer and is getting more consistent now, you can't really complain at this point, especially considering he is apparently making some players around him better, as was argued with the case of Fisher among others
Kovalev said: "Since then everybody waited for hat tricks. All my friends kept calling (and asking) 'when are you going to get a hat trick? We want to see your Moonwalk.' Last time I scored a hat trick I didn't do it, and it was like, 20, 30 of my friends got disappointed. It was like: 'How come we didn't see your famous Moonwalk?' So this time, for fun, I just decided to do it."
Yé trop fort. À chaque soir à Montréal j'esperais qui fasse un tour du chapeau pour voir son moonwalk. Pi y réussit à sa première saison avec Ottawa DAMN IT WISH HE DID IN MTL!!!! ANYWAYS GO SENS GO!!!!!!! KOVY ROCKS!!!
