@Tab54o Oh really?! I actually ordered a bridge of those as well, I am glad to see they are capable of a great deal of current. I was worried that I might destroy their internal diodes because they are only rated for 80A max. But I see that you are not having any problems. I will try to stay under 300A with the HGTG20N60A4D's so I do not badly exceed their maximum current rating.
Yeah theyre good but in this video I had the coil tuned wrong so it was getting hot. Still gotta be careful with them. I also have mine mounted on small heatsinks.
Very nice work. Looks like I can't just stick to SGTC's forever. Haven't had the time to take a deeper look into DRSSTC design though, but it's on my list... Keep up the good work.
I thought i had it at around 200amps.The other day I cut down my secondary a little smaller and was trying to tune it better and blew the IGBT's again and the OCD didn't do a damn thing. I just calculated it and it was set for .200 volts which means with my current setup thats about 400amps. IGBT's are rated for 280 pulsed. whoops.
Is this the secondary you wound in a movie on youtube? Nice to know that it is fixed now. I liked to see the streamers around the toroid without a nail. I can not run high BPS (very small IGBTs). You are using toroids with low cross section to promote easier output isn't it? Very nice!
amazing!! is this green flash in the end of the video from the igbts? it exploded? O: or fuse?

Very, nice. How big is your bigger coil?

Looks like you need a strike rail.

What IGBT's are you using? I am planning on using minibrick 60N60's from Ixys. Hopefully they won't explode at 400 amps or so.

@cr99991 Those should be plenty for 400 amps, im using fairchild HGTG20N60A4D.

@cr99991 Use external diodes in paralell. Most internal ones have bad performance anyways. And less stress on the IGBT:s is always a plus.

@NichtDieseTone Yeah I use TVS diodes across collector and emitter.

Hi Tom,
Nice coil!!
Gone to primary current feedback i see?
so...what primary current have you set your OCD to cut off at?
You do some real good work on DRSSTC's...keep it up!

I think I already ask that, but are you using a OCD?
racerxdl 3 years ago
yep. If you look closely on the last part of the video you can see the red LED flicker.

I've replaced the IGBT's and it runs fine. My advice would be to buy a variac. I use mine everyday.

yes same one but I completely trashed another one due to bad tuning.

How much ON time do you use? And what BPS?
teslina 3 years ago
I think the on time is around 110uS and bps should be around 120 but in parts of the video it was at 300 or so.

I'm sorry about your IGBTs. I'm looking to learn how to build DRSSTCs. Do you have any advice?
