I was born in 1985 and consider The Beatles the only untouchable act. True greats. And John Lennon's solo work was nearly as brilliant, especially Plastic Ono Band.
Telling us that Come together was releast in the same month that he had his first and quite probablly last sexual experiance really tells us absolutly nothing about his age.
Question about the lyrics: Is each verse about a different type of person who would be united under (or over) Leary or is each verse about Leary himself?
A typical studio technique is to enunciate differently or leave out alltogether ses and cs. During that time of recording, and even to this day, a skilled singer wil turn their head as they pronounce the ses and cs.
So i dont think it was entirely for the benefit of not exactly matching please as you also have the ending phrase words free and see while please has a strong z sound.
It was about bringing out the please and trying to not detract from the impact of the "shoot me" throughout.
I gotta say I totally don't get Sun-Ra. I listen to all kinds of music but that's one I can't grasp. And also let me say I'm a HUGE Beatles and Lennon fan. But for someone like you who grew up while the Beatles were happening, at what point did everyone universally accept that John was "one of the best singers ever"? Twist and Shout?

Interesting thing about the campaign reference in this vid is current political campaign's tendency to seize previously popular songs second-handedly as their theme.
Given the importance of music as an art form, would it be more powerful to commission the origination of a good new song as the theme of a political campaign?
This lack of originality and dependence upon pandering to the popular is symptomatic of the current state of politics.
I think the BJ reference only works if the title of the song has "come" in it, but it's nice to know someone else respects the work of Tiny Tim, he works on so many levels
Does first sexual experience includes masturbation? And does around the time of your first blow job also means around the time you give your first blow job? Does it include sexual abuse in your childhood years?
First sexual encounter would be with someone else... with yourself isn't an encounter persay... lol, plus with most ppl that 1st happened when their 11-13 whereas 'sexual experience' is more 14-17
Oh no Penn, one thing I always respected about how they uploaded your videos was that the tags were always relevant. Now I see that the tag abuse has started - that is terribly shameful, and I'll probably end up unsubscribing for that reason. Tag abuse is one of the leading destroyers of YouTube.
I think it's a great song. I've always wondered if "Please Please Me" is about oral sex. Not as good as "Come Together" but it's from their earlier days, so I suppose they had to be even more guarded with their meaning then. Or perhaps I'm just reading too much into it.
Of course it is but they can still sue you. The legal fees involved would be astronomical. Remember the Beatles are one of the few bands that you can not legally purchase in a digital format. Thank Sony and Michael Jackson for that! They belive it is financially viable to sue and keep pressing records than make it available, so their judgement should be questioned.
No I mean as a collection of ones and zeros. If you use a ripping program that enables you to harness the ones and zeros on any Beatles cd you have broken the copy protection inherent with a Red Book auidio cd (a CDDA). I don't care if its downloadable, if they released it on a flash drive like the original ghostbusters did I would be happy. But according to Sony any copy residing on your harddrive(or equivalant) in a digital format is against the law.
I thought the data on a CD was a collection of ones and zeros, like any digital data. I was also under the impression they never put any copy protection coding into standard CD's. You may break the law technically by ripping the songs and putting on your ipod, but it's not like someone's really going to come knocking on your door for this. BTW, I can't stand MP3 sound, I think it sucks on toast. CD's ok, but SACD, DVD Audio or the new lossless movie track formats, such as Dolby TruHD are better
It is of course a collection of ones and zeros however unless you purchase a license from Phillips you can not decode it, if you do you are technically breaking the law. Any product which has the CD logo on it has paid this. Of course mp3 sounds like crap from the compression. Any lossless format will be as good as the original by definition. However there exists no source of this type for a Beatles recording, the best you can do is probably the old wire recordings which can be found.
It's exactly interesting, he changed his poetry because that irresolution gives an effect that gets through to people. When something goes oddly wrong, people remember it, especially if it's so subtle that they don't mind enough to voluntarily forget and not think about it. How's that for a ramble?
That reminds me of the NOFX song, Please Play this Song on the Radio. The lyric is "every line is sung in time and every verse ends in a rhyme" however the word rhyme is intentionally mispronounced so that it sounds like rim.
Thats funny I have to think about this Time line wise roll back the tape. yah that is very interesting about john I have always given thought about that from the time it happened. It's like he know he was going to be murder very weird.
Good point about the knee. It always sorta stuck with me, maybe even annoyed me, when I heard that. But it was still one of my favorite songs, at least when not taking into account your friend's sex-based point of reference idea :)
I think the "shootme" roulade was in reference to the "He shoot Coca-Cola" line meaning cocaine. It is creepy the way it eventually worked out but I don't think it was an invitation or dare least anyone get the wrong idea about that.
The question, as always, is whether the fact that we can't accurately judge those songs because they've already become nostalgia means that the our perception of songs that come out today as being crap is false.
The thing I find interesting, and also sucks, for people like u and independent film makers, is that everything is copy written, that you can't quote lyrics...... Would Micheal Jackson come after you? I don't even know if he still owns the rights to the song....but it also sucks that images that we are exposed to everyday, are images that film makers aren't allowed to use with out permission.......
That's a good theory, but I suppose it only works if you like anything that's coming out on the radio at the time. I, personally, don't listen to the radio so this doesn't hold true for me. My first major breakup, however, did put a lot of Weird Al songs in perspective!
I listen to Baba O Riley still to this day...that being the song I that reminds me of my first love and first real sex I had with another guy....Sadly, even though I still listen to that song...I don't get blow jobs anymore. Why is that, you ask? I live in North Dakota. Fly over states are tuff on us gay boys.
Thank you, Penn, for doing benefits for people with mental/developmental issues. I have some issues in those lines and I'm working on my Ph.D. to help autistic people so I love to see celebrities supporting my community.
I hope "bullshit" isn't a trademark, but sorry I have to call Bullshit on this whole idea of not be able to judge quality of songs at the time of your first sexual experience. To begin with one must assume that you are somehow clairvoyant enough to know - in advance - when this would be. Even if I grant you that the real meaning is teenagers can't judge good music I would say that its all subjective anyway. I like Enya. Many people consider that a mental illness :)
Don't hate me for this, but does anyone think the fact that John repeatedly says "SHOOT ME" in Come Together in any way encouraged that nutjob to murder him.
my first blowjob and last blow jobs were almost 2 years ago... so... I'm running out of time for music that I can judge cause 99 percent of the music that's come out beween 5 years ago and 1 year from now is soooo.... lacking compared to stuff made before I was born or while I was too young to have sexual activity.
I think it's bullshit that we're not allowed to judge music we enjoy simply because our parents fucked when the good music is playing and now we have to judge shitty fucking music.
No shit Sherlock. If I was searching for something good, I would make an effort to go look for it. The fact is there is still good music. That's why I said "most" I guess you ignored that part.
