I'm not sure if anyone else notices this, so I'll point it out. When he says "afraid," he also means "a frayed" - both at the same time. It's both the end of his thought about being lost and afraid and the beginning of "I'm a frayed rope tying down a leaky boat." It's really brilliant writing.
