The only "standard" is the legal standard which says candidates must release their tax returns. The fact that Heinz went beyond that doesn't change the relevant standard. And since the McCains didn't insist that Heinze release her returns, they are not employing a "double standard."

John Kerry made less money than his wife, who inherited most of her fortune. The McCains are in a similar boat. In 2004, Teresa Heinz Kerry resisted calls for disclosure, just as Cindy McCain is now. Republicans insisted that all materials, relating to Kerry's income and his wife's, be publicly released, and the Kerrys ultimately agreed.

But it's worth noting that in 2004, the Republican National Committee spent quite a bit of time and energy demanding that the Kerry campaign release Teresa Heinz Kerry's tax returns. I guess Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Did McCain himself insist that Heinz-Kerry release her returns? I think not. You have to remember that this is John McCain. Just because the Republican party says something doesn't mean he does. He has strayed from the party line many times. Just one of the multiple reasons why this whole "McCain will be Bush III" argument is bullshit, he's his own man.
