@ Meechio What's the point in removing a world record in order to give it to someone else who will have cheated their way to it whether they were caught or not.

The old CCCP and GDR regimes back then would remove their promising talents from the normal education system and put them in specialist sports schools where they would do little else but train all day. They would have produced Olympic champions time after time, drugs or not.

As far as I am concerned the Women's World Records at 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m should all be wiped from the record books. Flo Jo, Marita Koch and K ratochvilova were all riddled with drugs when they set these so called records. Why do you think nobody has got anywhere near these times since they were set. Flo Jo's set in 1988, Koch's set in 1985, Kratochvilova in 1983, you do the Maths!!

the americans were cheating just as much as the east germans and russians. The prolific cheaters were only caught through mistakes or admittals. Ben johnson was never caught for the drugs he was actually taking, because he only took them for training. Flojo will never be caught for the growth hormones because you couldnt catch it in those days and her family banned the coroner from testing the body. but the USA are always the good guys right?

Why do you guys insist on portraying these discussions as an Eastern Bloc v USA thing? Of course what most of us try to say is that doping and cheating was widespread among ALL countries back in the 1980s, so ALL records dating back to that era should be reconsidered, no matter if the were achieved by an East German, a Soviet, an American or a Czech.

You can't discount all great performances from an era just because a few were taking PED's! There have been just as many athletes since that have run unbelievable times using illegal substances & were never caught! Didn't Carl Lewis test positive more than once but it was hushed up by the Americans? The only way to stop it is to enforce out of season random testing for ALL countries (some Nat. Feds do & some don't) by an independent body and ban all those tested positive for life!

It's a well known fact that many of the Eastern Bloc states had extensive drugs programmes intended to bring sports success...that is why they were so strong...but that is not to say that others weren't at it too...they blatently were...

It's why many of the times and other benchmarks are so hard to beat today...

But for sheer unbeatability - Flo-Jo's time of 10.49 in the women's 100m won't be beat for decades! She had to be on steroids - coz how else is a women gonna to run a man's time!

Cucumb is essentially correct. The communist-bloc drug programs of the 1970s and 1980s were state-sponsored, while today it basically involves coaches and/or individuals acting on their own.
