I made this yesterday and it was so delicious! I didn't have the hot pepper paste (I'm buying it this thursday for my ddukbokki and kimchi), so I used srirachi instead to spice it up. It was awesome, I plan to make it many times in the future, as well as many of your other dishes. You really inspire me, Maangchi! :-) I'm not Korean, but my parents tell me I have the heart of a korean woman! ;-)
I noticed how long you cook the soybean sprouts. Doesn't it get all mushy and breaks apart when you cook it for too long? Mung bean sprouts fall apart if they're cooked too long.
I am about to make the soup for the family. Boy, am I glad to find the video showing how to make it. Thanks! I found out that using sissors to be real handy removing the end part, and listening to classical music lessen the frustration while I remove all the tail part cut off.
@CloverLemon from what i know about soybean sprouts, it's yellow 'cause it gets no sun
and it would be green 'cause it starts to produce chlorophyll once it contacts with sun..
or that's the assumption I made when my dad brought a in-home soybean sprout-grower-thingy, he always covered the top, but the ones that got a bit of sun turned green.
@iynn512 Korean food consists of garlic, onion, and green onions - either one, a combination of two or just all three.
it definitely gives it flavor (: you probably won't realize it 'til you cook one with and one without it.
I mean, unless it's absolutely disgusting to you or you're allergic, then definitely - omit! but if you aren't and you take those ingredients out - you're left with soybean sprout broth and salt
you don't need to wash the dashima before cooking, there may be white powdery stuff on it but it is not dirt, it is actually natural glutamate (like MSG but not as unhealthy!) (:
@Maangchi Thank you !! I made so many dishes from you! My husband love it!
@catherine1707 Your Korean husband probably wants this soup made with the soybean sprouts in the video. It's sold at a Korean grocery store and Chinese store. Check out China town or Korean grocery store. Don't forget to see more detailed info about this soup, tips, and photos on the recipe on my website. Good luck with finding the soybean sprouts (called kongnamul in Korean). Check out the ingredient section on my website if you want to see what it looks like, too.
I love spicy food and so much!!!! I enjoy the spiciness and pungence of food so much!!!!!!That's part of the reason why I love Korean food and cuisine so much. To me, of course, the spicy one is always the better one.
Yes, it does relieve cold symptoms. Anything from a spicy soup to snacking on jalapeno slices will help you breathe a lot better and much faster than any medicine I have used.
I only watched the first 30 or something seconds so far but, when I heard her start saying hang over I started laughing! It's a good thing, nothing bad though! Lol, less than a minute into a video about cooking and ...Ahhh! Ahaha, thanks for the tip! ; ) Yeah, soup helps with that stuff. Thanks for this recipe, I've been looking for it all over!!
Spicy foods not only trigger a sensation to heighten awareness, but also will trigger the release of endorphines which is the world's most perfect pain reliever and pleasure enhancer.
Despite what many people seem to believe, spicy food can also help relieve certain types of stomach discomfort including nausea which coffee may irritate.
Diarrhea - Coffee causes it more than spicy foods.
After a hard night of drinking, I'll take a chili over Starbucks and Pepto any day.
Do you have a recipe for the red rice you use in this video. I was looking on your website as well and I couldn't find it! By the way, I just LOVE your videos! Makes me hungry!!
We'll I made this for a Geography project....and me and my mom could not find hot pepper flakes so we substituted and it turned out really hot/spicy....hopefully i get a good grade on it....I turn it in tomarrow...wish me luck..lol
I would have the non-spicy version every few days at the Korean worker's cafeteria on Osan Air Base. I would eat there almost every day to get away from the American processed food they served in the military "chow halls". Korean food is always fresh and good for you.
My mother is Korean and I think it's SO FUNNY when people ask me if she's from North or South Korea. Seriously, do you know ANYONE from North Korea? No? Probably because North Korea is a communist country, and you can't leave unless your a refugee or defect. Just an FYI.
this soup is really refreshing especially when it's steaming hot! I think it's because of the really light/watery liquid texture. I definitely prefer mine spicy =]
great videos! I enjoy watching all of them very much
Hey Maangchi! :) I have all the ingredients except for the anchovies and I was wondering if I could substitute the anchovies for fish sauce for the broth?
ok :) it's funny I watched this video and saw the kelp and I totally forgot I had some buried in the back of the cupboard. lol hehe I am off to make some soup for breakfast now! ;)
I can't believe how flavourful this soup is. It's so simple, and I thought it would have a much plainer flavour. The spicy version is great without the fish, and I recommend that to other vegetarians.
she just boils the kongnamul and adds salt and dashida (i think that's like powdered beef stock...or at least that's what the korean package claims) and some pepper flakes. tastes good, but i want to try this version!

How to make rice using a pot:
1. Combine 1 cup of short grain rice, 1/2 cup of sweet brown rice, 1/2 cup of barley rice, and 2 tbs of black sweet rice
2. Wash and drain a couple of times and put it in a pot with a thick bottom
3. Pour 3 cups of water into the pot and soak it for a few hours and close the lid.
4. Bring the pot to a boil over medium heat for 10 minutes.
5. Open the lid and turn the rice over with a rice scoop or spoon.
6. Simmer it over low heat for another 10 minutes!

The purple color is a telltale sign that she mixed wild sweet black rice 훅미잡쌀 with regular rice... you can also mix beans into it... look up a recipe for jab gok bab 잡곡밥. Remember that a little of the wild rice goes a long way.
