Hey bro, i have a question. I have a pair of 600 watt, 5 way pioneer 6x9's installed in my car. For some odd reason the one on the driver side static's, and sound's busted as if it has a shortage. I know the speaker isn't blown because, i experienced this problem with the last pair, and bought these brand new, and have the same problem. It does it on certain song's. I have it connected to an alpine mrp f-300 4 channel. PLEASE get back with me SOON with suggestion's, THNX!!!
kinda worthless i can still get more power doing my own steps get a yellow top battery a isolater to keep back battery charged and thats all will post video soon 3 15s
I'm from a family of mechanics, so we've know about this kind of stuff as it applies to other things as well. I'm using a second battery and 4ga. Im only running 1200rms watts (900 to subs,300 to mids) 4ga is enough. Now my lights only dim at idle at high volumes. You can just barely detect a slight blip in the lights at 2000rpm+. If i go with bigger amplifiers, I'll add a bigger alt, run 1/0 for ground and from battery to battery. At least you aren't telling people to put a "cap" in. Thanks!
OK to me its pointless to upgrade your bass due to the fact that in most states now if you can hear music for more then 15 feet away from a car the cops will ticket you and tell you to turn it down.
@xbox360rocksful HA, what a foolish thing to say. Do you really think the pigs will ever stop us from enjoying music? Also, how many people do you know who have gotten that ticket? Shit.. the only trouble i can think of is from good ol' grandma
Actually, here in NY, they will absolutely break your balls for having your system bumping. Anything over like 85-90 db will land you a $300 noise violation. Then, at that point in time, they have every right to start nitpicking and write you tickets for tints, exhaust, low tread, endangering the welfare of others, etc. Just because your ignorance hasn't landed you that lovely ticket, does not mean it is a foolish thing to say.
hey bro, quick question every is saying to have my 0 awg wire from the positive on my battery to the alternator, however the positive on my battery runs to my starter and from my starter to my solenoid (ford) and then the power comes from my alternator to the solenoid,, what should i do in terms of switching for the o awg switch the wire from the positive battery terminal to the starter? or switch the one from my alternator to the solenoid..hope u can help
0 gauge cable is waaaayyyy overkill for this... its better than the stock cables for sure, but check the resistance of your current wiring before dropping 50 bucks on oversized cables and terminals. Do the math, V=I/R, P=I*V. Your alternater will never produce enough juice to make full use of those wires, might as well do you're wiring with rubber coated rebar at this point.
is it possible for my 1200 watt rms sub setup to wreck my battery. Also, if my subs stop playing but the music continues is that because of the battery? My battery is new, but it's nothing special...
@EXOcontralto what if im just using "normal" ring terminals for grounding? would i put washers on both sides of the terminal so it is all touching? or do you have a better suggestion? or should i just cut the end of the ring so its like a 2 prong fork and then bend it around so its smaller and will be touching the screw. any certain type of screw that should be used?
@addisonu23 Believe it or not, your tutorial is more informative than even RF has on here, and really easy instructions to follow.Only thing I recommend is to add the chassis ground to the strut/shock bolt as it is a more solid ground, directly to the frame of the vehicle.Yet, thanks for this info, as alot of people will benefit from your video. Thanks man!
first of all. most car audio guys know well enough if your running that much power that requires 0 gauge wire, your not gonna run it through your car battery.
I would be so honored to drive by exo's house and have him film me play bass lol, also does the big three upgrade help even if you have a fairly weak amp?
Good video, but I think you're off on your 25% boost and 15V estimates. You can't create any more voltage/amperage than your alternator can put out (unless you're using a transformer but that would be pointless), and if you're using a stock alternator, 4 gauge is more than enough.
@TheEnragedHawk - On the contrary sir - You can definitely increase the amount of amps drawn from your alternator... Just the like analogy of a hose - You could have a 6" hose on a 3000 gallon per minute water pump pumping out 3000GPM's.The second you put a smaller hose on the pump, the 3000GPM water pump can no longer reach it's full potential... Bigger hoses = Less Resistance = More Power.... Lesson learned: bigger wires allow for bigger current draws.
@EXOcontralto Not sure if I'm replying twice or not, looks like my other comment got removed... But it all comes down to ohms law, you can't create more than your alternator can produce. If you're running 0 gauge to the back, yes you need to use 0 gauge to ground the battery, but if you have a stock alternator, there is no point running more than 4 or even 8 gauge from it to the frame. Even if you did, you'd still have to run a new + power cable from the alternator to the battery.
@TheEnragedHawk you sir are a complete idiot. If you use that stock thin ass wire, no way will your stock alt put out its max amps due to the higher resistance of the thin cable. The 0 guag will let the stock alt get maximum current flow to the battery and wont put as much stress on it, Also you said just use 4-8 gauge for the big three if you have stock alt, but what if a year later you decide to upgrade your alt? you would already have the 0 gauge runs so you wont waste any $
@speakerlover13 I went to school for electrical engineering, worked for custom shops for 7 years, and now have my own shop; yeah, I'm probably an idiot. Most stock alternators only produce 90 to 100 amps. And I'm not playing the 'what if' game; I'm talking about stock only. As I have stated multiple times, you cannot draw more from an alternator than it was designed to produce. Upgrading the engine ground is still useless unless you change out the alternator power cable as well.
@TheEnragedHawk haha i love people that come back bragging about how smart they are, that does not mean anything. My dad plus 2 of my uncles are electrical engineers and a few months ago they tested a car before big 3 with 0 gauge and then after, lets just say the engine did not bog down, way less headlight dimming and the voltage would not drop as much and it recovered faster. each test they used a brand new battery. NO ONE LISTEN TO ENRAGEDHAWK, he is a retard. I'm done
@speakerlover13 Your age speaks for itself. Do you even realize what I'm talking about? I'm talking about the basics of Ohms law, and if you can't understand that, you'll have a hard time getting any farther in your wannabe car stereo career. Good luck to you kiddo.
@EXOcontralto Oh, and if you require an analogy - Just because you put a 42" wide hose on a 3000 gallon per minute water pump, doesn't mean you will ever get more than 3000 gallon per minute. The pump isn't designed for it.
@EXOcontralto Thank you so much for making this video exo.I cant thank you enough. I did the big three upgrade last night with 0 gauge and it made a world of difference. Also, i know your van is gone, but where did you get that mcr 200 amp alternator from? I am lookin for one for my subaru.
@EXOcontralto dude i like ur video but as a plumber i can tell u that u can go down a size w water and get the same gpm but ur pressure will greatly increase. the same process is used to create water pressure coming out of water towers and even in ur home to create more pressure...but going up wire sizes can't hurt anything and even if it dont help it makes it easier for when u do replace the alternator. u should'v done a before and after volts and ampage reading so no one could agure w u.
@micrecase If expressing one's ignorance is telling me, then yes, he sure "told me." If anyone can back up what they say with a little math, some actual physics, and no guess work, I would be happy to concede.
@TheEnragedHawk haha you think i am stupid, but i can build amps, power supplies and i also wired up my churches new audio, lighting and video setup plus i helped wire up a radio tower my dad was hired to work on. I think I know what ohms law is. I am also a sophomore in highschool taking a college level electronics class and am way ahead of others in my grade with my math ability. I am ending this stupid argument, If you need a bit more power, do big three and see if it helps
@speakerlover13 If you'll allow me, I'd like to quote a verse from the Book of Hypocrisy, "i love people that come back bragging about how smart they are, that does not mean anything." Amen.
@TheEnragedHawk I can vouch for the 15V at least on SOME cars, as I had a 97 Grand Prix GT years ago where I had a constant 15.0 or 15.1v showing on the info display in the car, and verified at the alternator. The issue is that the factory wires restrict power flow, especially on older cars. In my experience, the battery to chassis ground wire and the battery to alternator ground wires are 6 gauge at best. It's not a "boost", it's just less restriction.
@FranxxVideos .......You do!!! That's where the engine ground to battery NEG comes in... You ground your battery NEG to the frame, then you ground your engine to your battery NEG, in turn grounding that to the frame... See?
@MrWhybotherwithme I would start with google :) Then, figure out how much you want to spend, and how much bass you want, as well as the quality :) Personally i have 2x10" MTX Magnums (got them in a combo deal($180) with an amp,250wrms) and they are great, but low quality. It really depends on the box, and the box depends on how much space you have in your car, and what kind of box it is. Another MAJOR part of a sub system is the amp, a quality amp can make all the difference:)
@wwwMTAYLORca - Then you obviously need to learn more about automotive wiring - Alternators are grounded through the engine, that's why you upgrade the wire...
hey bro, thanks for making this video im gonna try to do this to my truck im also gonna put 2 12" l7's and a pyle amp with 0 gauge wire. ill post a video when im done with it might take a couple of weeks tho
What were you talking about at the end about replacing your fuse? I understand everything else. I just don't get why your fuse would blow (if that is what happened in the video) or why you would replace it?
@SubMasterT he has capacitors for his system. when they are drained, you dont want to just reconnect the battery or put the fuse in or it will spark hard enough to burn terminals as well as send all kinds of electronics killing voltage spikes through the electrical system. (the "zonking" he mentioned @ 2:36)
hey exo, im thinking about doin the big 3, but not sure what guage wire to use, since shits expencive in australia, dont wanna go unnecessarly big
ive got 2 12" kicker CVR's being powered by an Option Audio OAK1200 at 1200rms @1ohm, but my amp apparantly has a realy small footprint. ill also be running a 2ch amp, 300rms (75rms p/ch @4ohm)
Would 2 guage be good enough for engine block ground, battery ground and if I run the pos. wire and have it split to a 4guage and a 8guage?
Hey bro, just wanted 2 say THNX 4 posting this vid. I went out DIRECTLY after viewing this vid, and did the BIG 3 on my vehicle. i look @ all of your vid's that i come across, because you help with out with a LOT of what i don't know about car audio. I saw one of your vid's when you were suggesting those who experience SEVERE winter's 2 let the subs heat up b4 bumping em'. So again I THANK U, and PLEASE continue to keep posting vid's, and creating INSANE BASS!!!
My 0 gauge and terminals are on their way!! Battery post terminals are already upgraded! Just installing everything is wayy fun!! I cant wait fir my build to be done. EXO be on the lookout for my vids!!
@EXOcontralto Why do you ground it to that fender suppport which is only as good as the bolts and welds attached to it? I already know the answer, but wouldn't grounding it to the frame be a better idea? I mean if you're looking for a good ground, get a GOOD ground?
Cool, I had it right all along. 2/0 to the back and 1/0 for the big three. Its a Work in progress. I'm building the wires now to run the big 3, and working on ideas for the amp rack. Im not in a hurry
Just so you know... Larger cable doesn't increase the power flow, per se. The power flowing from the battery/alternator will still be the same. Larger cables will decrease your resistive losses (engineers call them copper losses) in the system, so you have closer to the nominal 13.8V received at the amp when the bass hits, instead of getting lower voltage form resistive drops in the power lines.
yo EXOcontralto ive watched all most all your videos all i can say is keep up the good work man im actually lookin forward to your new project im a big fan congrats. I would also like to say fuck all the haters who are hating on you they are just mad because they cant be like you bro when i get my 97 t-bird set ima put the videos up on youtube and you can see how many fuck heads that are complaining so keep up the good work
Hahaha just finished the big 3. Ive got a yellow top optima. Grounded it to the engine block and straight to the frame( sorry exo but I dont like where your other ground is) Thanks for your help though
To those that understand the video I'm going to add my input that wasn't mentioned in the video. Yes you need to upgrade your battery to a red top optima ($189.99 battery) and see about a 120 or 240 amp alternator (about $160 alternator) or you will kill your battery and possibly blow some fuses.
Hey Exo! have you changed your ground yet? to something thats connected straight to the frame since this video? or nahh? Just wondering im sure you could find a better ground then that! - Mx! :)
if i need to add a fuse in between the the alternator positive to the battery positive
also i have not done this upgrade yet as i am looking around for problems that my system is giving me atm
every time i turn up my bass controller the CD player cuts off then switches back on again, i have upgraded my alternator to a much bigger one and i was wondering if once i do the big three upgrade will this error be fixed
I just did the big 3 with my car but didnt do the ground to the engine block, i replaced the alternator to battery.. no inline fuse though, and battery to frame. my car wont start.. what's wrong?
how would i get 0 gauge wire to my amp? because the terminal is no where near 0 gauge. also my battery is in the trunk (i have a Chevy cobalt) is it necessary to run 0 gauge from the alternator to the battery? or can i just keep the stock wires there?
love ur vids dude, however, i have 2 re sx 18s and will either get the alpine mrp-m2000 to send 1000w to each sub @ 2ohms or the re audio xtx 5000.1? I have a 97 Intrepid & want a wall for daily driving, got any vids of step by step wall builds for a 4dr sedan? Thanks in advance and keep giving us the raw vids!!
If ur lights r dimming ur volts r dropping. A big 3 should help out with that. U might wanna to think about getting a deep cycle battery as well. Hope this helps
dude, when my sub pumps, the car lights came down,my car looks like a party light....this will be because i dont have a big3 in my car?? soz my bad english
@TheNickyt89 - You must really have a lot of important things to do during the day to be able to go on an ALL CAPS RAGE on a video about a vehicle's electrical system.... ;)
you grounded it to some thin sheet metal? youd be better off grounding it to a bolt in the strut tower those bolts run to the frame. That sheet metal will vary based on the welds made to it. It works but it could be better
LOL yeah, I've also heard about that urban legend about the big cable on the alternator. It's totally false. If the alternator label says it charges 100 AMPS, it's not gonna charge more or better by changing it's cable to a thicker one. If you want more AMPS, change the alternator or buy another one only for the audio system if it's too much.
Upgrading the wire size will NOT provide more power to your electronics. Every electrical component will draw as much or a little power as it needs, regardless of the size of wire carrying the current. (electricity 101). The only thing upgrading wire size does is allow the safe transmission of a certain amount of current. 0 gauge wire is rated at a MAX of 600v and 170A with insulation rated for 90C degrees. So if your system only needs say 60A save your money and go with 4 or 6 Gauge.
ok i got a real problem here i want to do the big 3 upgrade but my battery is in the trunk not under the hood and thats a lot of wire to b going all of the way to the back what should i do?!?!?!
Hey great vid, but wondering I changed the cable from the alternator to the battery and the cable from the battery to the chassy but didnt change the one to the enginge block because i got about 40-50 mm of cable to the minus, shouldt that be enough? Because my lights dim when i play it loud. Ive got a 500 w rms kicker 15" 2 ohms and a JBL 7001 aka 700 w rms in 2 ohms (mono block) and as ive heard it drains double the power with mono, aint sure about that but it said on a car specialist site

TheEnragedHawk 2 weeks ago
@TheEnragedHawk I can vouch for the 15V at least on SOME cars, as I had a 97 Grand Prix GT years ago where I had a constant 15.0 or 15.1v showing on the info display in the car, and verified at the alternator. The issue is that the factory wires restrict power flow, especially on older cars. In my experience, the battery to chassis ground wire and the battery to alternator ground wires are 6 gauge at best. It's not a "boost", it's just less restriction.

FranxxVideos 3 weeks ago
@FranxxVideos .......You do!!! That's where the engine ground to battery NEG comes in... You ground your battery NEG to the frame, then you ground your engine to your battery NEG, in turn grounding that to the frame... See?

MrWhybotherwithme 3 weeks ago
@MrWhybotherwithme I would start with google :) Then, figure out how much you want to spend, and how much bass you want, as well as the quality :) Personally i have 2x10" MTX Magnums (got them in a combo deal($180) with an amp,250wrms) and they are great, but low quality. It really depends on the box, and the box depends on how much space you have in your car, and what kind of box it is. Another MAJOR part of a sub system is the amp, a quality amp can make all the difference:)
stertheder 3 weeks ago
i dont see the point of changing the engine ground. you ground your audio equipment to the body not the engine.
wwwMTAYLORca 3 weeks ago
@wwwMTAYLORca - Then you obviously need to learn more about automotive wiring - Alternators are grounded through the engine, that's why you upgrade the wire...

What were you talking about at the end about replacing your fuse? I understand everything else. I just don't get why your fuse would blow (if that is what happened in the video) or why you would replace it?
SubMasterT 1 month ago
@SubMasterT he has capacitors for his system. when they are drained, you dont want to just reconnect the battery or put the fuse in or it will spark hard enough to burn terminals as well as send all kinds of electronics killing voltage spikes through the electrical system. hey exo, im thinking about doin the big 3, but not sure what guage wire to use, since shits expencive in australia, dont wanna go unnecessarly big
ive got 2 12" kicker CVR's being powered by an Option Audio OAK1200 at 1200rms @1ohm, but my amp apparantly has a realy small footprint. ill also be running a 2ch amp, 300rms (75rms p/ch @4ohm)
Would 2 guage be good enough for engine block ground, battery ground and if I run the pos. wire and have it split to a 4guage and a 8guage?
thanks man
PJRehlaender 1 month ago
@PJRehlaender the cost difference is that great from 2 to 0 gauge?
don't split runs, if you're going to run a particular gauge, run that all the way to what you're connecting.

JSGL1989 2 months ago
hey EXO,
love your videos btw.
but to get down to business, ive been doing a bit of research and found the big 3 upgrade.
and its costs.
my wallet is a bit busted up after upgrading my system.
so what i did, with my old 8 awg, was making 2 connects over the existing car connections.
i connected from the alternator to the positive battery, and the negative terminal to the car frame.
i know this isnt as effective as 0 awg connections, but would this increase my electrical flow?
x1ofakind1x 2 months ago
I hate how people look at me crazy when i hear bass in a distance
Quekil830 2 months ago in playlist Subwoofer Build
Just so you know... Larger cable doesn't increase the power flow, per se. The power flowing from the battery/alternator will still be the same. Larger cables will decrease your resistive losses (engineers call them copper losses) in the system, so you have closer to the nominal 13.8V received at the amp when the bass hits, instead of getting lower voltage form resistive drops in the power lines.

To those that understand the video I'm going to add my input that wasn't mentioned in the video. Yes you need to upgrade your battery to a red top optima ($189.99 battery) and see about a 120 or 240 amp alternator (about $160 alternator) or you will kill your battery and possibly blow some fuses.

you grounded it to some thin sheet metal? youd be better off grounding it to a bolt in the strut tower those bolts run to the frame.
