Brilliant song...I love Matt Finish..Matt Moffitt RIP..was so great to watch..so magnetic...One of my favourite Bands in Australia..Saw them so many times I lost count...and I never got bored.(I get bored easily..lol..)..It surprises me they didn't go Overseas and do really well..Maybe Matt didn't really want it to get that far....that's all I can think of..They would have 'made it'...Too late now..no-one can replace Matt..no-one..So sad..<3
@witchyliLL23 I totally agree. I saw them at the now defunct Bel air Hotel in Newcastle which was a legendary rock venue many tears, years ago. The memories stick with me. My local pub getting these bands. I even saw INXS there. Dragon etc.
@blunt1 Yeah I saw them at St George Sailing Club 30 years ago sneaked in through back deck @16yrs. Awesome and I remember looking the crowd from the front side around and everyone was pretty much dumbstruck, They had some great Sydney bands and some interstaters. This song one of their classics as was Come on Over - cheers
heartbreaker :( we can hold our heads high in the music world with gems like this.songs, they are eternal...better than headstones....we all get to hear this. how long will i be here? songs will be remembered, we will be forgotten m50
What a great version of this song. Love the strings. So sad Matt is gone - he is one of those people who you always expected to be around making great music. RIP
Matt FInish...... my mid teen years where intertwined with MF. The Sundowner Hotel on Friday night.... Lost my girlfriend the night we saw MF at the "Sunny"...thought i'd never be able to breathe again..all to the backdrop of these tunes being belted out. Now i sit and listen to this 30 years later. WOW. This tune stirs such emotion in me that i had to stop sit and think about life for the rest of the afternoon. So sad to hear about MM's passing.
Brilliant!!!!!! <3 This is my all time favourite song! Matt Finish <3 I want it played at my funeral when the time comes...about 100 years or so!!! : ) R.I.P Matt Moffitt <3 Gone way too soon!!!! Love ya! <3
I've always loved this song...I don't remember the orchesration in the original so if it was added...brilliant...if it wasn't added then THANK GOD its here so I can relive the beauty any time I feel like it
Good old Blue Mountains boy! I seen Mat Finish for the first time at a concert at Penrith Park in 1993 and they were supporting Midnight Oil........the smell of hash through the air and just the silliness of my youth and me hanging with my mates from school, something i will never forget. RIP Matt!
Thanks for posting this up. I went to use my turntable for the first time in about 12 years and the belt had snapped. This live version is better than the studio one!
Saw this band at the Tanelorn Festival up on the Central Coast of NSW in about 1982. Brilliant. Machinations, Mi-Sex, Max Merrit and the Meteors, Matt Finish and Midnight Oil played the Saturday night. What's with all those 'M"s?? Great show but it was as cold as buggery - maybe late August or early September. This was just before the Narrara Festivals of 1983 and 84. Good times. Thanks for the post. Great song and a great band.
Always loved this song. Great time in my life when this was around. I always thought it was Mark Hunter sang this. So sad that both these wonderful writers/singers are no longer with us. at least we'll always treasure such great songs they left for us to enjoy. Thanks guys. Love & Peace!!
This song always meant so much -> My lights just dimmed as I wrote this. And yess...this is one of my fave songs...'wade into the deep" And now I know...why darkeness makes me smile...we'll all just blow away -> And I will love it always :)
Something like Dmaj7sus2 to Asus2 in the first section, then when it moves down its Fmaj7 Gadd9 Asus2 then quickly through A5 G5 as it goes back down to the Fmaj7 to repeat that part again.
I just posted this to the one woman I can ever love. Love is a very fleeting thing, and so is life. She may see this and finally understand, and maybe she will not. Who can say? I love you Ana
I saw Matt perform at Harbord Diggers in the late 90's, I was blown away by his talent , I hate to say it, I had a feeling he was not going to be around for long.
Life is so strange. God Bless him and his Loved ones, for he has truly left a legacy Australians can be so proud of.

One of the greatest songs ever composed that I have heard in my lifetime. Matt Moffitt was a truly remarkable songwriting genius. Long live his music for years to come.
Here here Matt Moffit, unfortunate that such a talent has passed. I bought this album in the 80's, but due recognition was not given to such heart felt music........
Oh Boy does this bring things back. Three hours after hearing it for the first time I got dumped, one week before my 21st, always twangs the heart strings sad and happy at the same time. That was 25 Years ago, I love the new version
It is one of those songs. You know, that you attach a special memory to. Anyone who knows this song will always have a connection to their past. How many songs come along that do that.
i used to go and see these guys around melbourne in the pubs when the streets were half normal Matt Moffitt was so far advanced for his time it wasnt funny i just hope that we can keep that era of music alive and not let it fadec away what a ledgend imagine how big this band would of been had tradgery not struck the mind boggles
It is great!!! to hear this song again. Great posting!!
Who put the strings over this song do you know?
I had never heard it with the violins before.
Mats original was better I think. A rock Ballard. The strings take away something (they steal from it) and turn it into some white Mid Class acceptable conventional fairy thing!!!
Its funny how 1 tiny thing can lead on to another.I don't remember what I thought at the time, but it made me think of Matt Finish.Had not heard the song for yonks.(a long time for those that don't understand).I bought the cassette back in the early 80's I absolutely loved this song.Decided to check it out here and what memories it stired..To dwsnare,I checked out wikipedia and yes unfortunately,Matt passed away in 2003,may he REST IN PEACE.Thankyou to all of Matt Finish for such a song.Stay Safe
Am i reading this right ? Has Matt passed on, if that what im seeing on one comment left - i hope not thats not true. If so, then God, r.i.p. Matty. Im feeling a bit queezy now. I do the work at Piccolo (refrigeration) & im sure Tina probly knows, but if its correct, we've never spoke about it, probly cause so many people come through those doors. Vitorio is such a nice guy to, i'lle need to talk to him about it. Just finishing, i had a very quik bet about this song that Dragon sank it, i won.
I feel stupid and shocked. I did not know Matt had left us. I met Matt in The Cross one night in around 2000. He was a really, really nice and genuine guy. We hung out for hours around the Piccolo Cafe before the subject of music was even raised. I then found out who he was, even though I'd always loved THAT song. To Matt's family and friends, you have my deep condolences. He was a pleasure to know that night. I'm really very saddened.
I'm certainly no expert, but i think if you play an Em, but move it up 1 string (same frets), that's one chord and then move up 1 string that's the other....only other change F G Am - hope it makes some sort of sense
This was one of the very first CD's I got for my collection & thanks for posting this awesome song, I did not find out until yesterday about Matt passing away it's so unfair that a performer like Matt was taken away from us way to soon. MATT MAY YOU FOREVER REST IN PIECE YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN & WILL BE MISSED BY EVERYONE WHO LOVED YOUR MUSIC......R.I.P MATT
Awesome song, thanks. Matt was great performer. I was sad for days on hearing of his death a few years ago. I grew up in the same town as Matt, my brother played in his first band at High School. I will always remember him and his great music.
been waiting so long for this song to pop up. love it. turned up to his concert down the entrance nsw and was drinking with the band but i did not hear of matts passingbefore the show. such a shock but had a great night, the band did a great job.
Is this the version off the Short Note album? It sounds different - orchestrally enhanced. I had to go out and buy the album the other day just to get this song. It must be one of the best Australian songs of all time!!
I'm very happy seeing this today, it made my week!
John is a master in his own right for being there and for his beautiful intelligent drumming. Roy Buchanan thought as much too..
We all loved Matt, but it was more about what we felt when we heard his music than the Man I believe, thats why we are still so touched by the music now. Nostalgic and full of depth. A true Aussie larrikin at heart, you know he predicted his own early death.
This is a reply to Illumani101, so i hope it ends up under his comment. I just wanted to say that i agree with you about the drumming in Matt Finish, it always struck me when i first heard the band how musical the drumming was - every beat had it's place and nothing was put in that didn't need to be there. Such a great band and one of my most favourite albums of the '80's and of course now.
Great song
