Football I feel is being slightly ridiculed here, but for all intents and purposes he makes an interesting argument. To take a statistic that spans almost 80 years, 665 dead kids actually isnt that much. 8.4 kids a year get into a fatal footbal accident, while tragic is a very small number for what is probably millions of kids playing each year. Either way, its an interesting point but perhaps a little misleading.
@btrainiscool point is, even breathing is risky. What we accept and don't accept is largely cultural; zero deaths have been directly linked to video games, but at least 661 are directly linked to football, which nobody has a problem with.
@ubustang actually, there have been a few deaths related to video games. maybe not the blatant direct cause but look up Jeff Dailey and Peter Burkowski. These two gamers proved if youre in a poor enough physical condition, increased heart rate and high score stress can literally trigger a heart attack. I think most gamers will be fine, but if youre sittin on your ass ALL day playing video games, youre doing more damage to heart than you might know. Just trying to present both sides of the story.
Well, I play both games and FOOTball. The real kind of FOOTball contains little violence, and there is so many games for kids that don't contain violence. There is even educational games out there, that are quite good. Ive found out that I want to do both, because its very social to be on a football team and gaming is also quite awesome. If I had my own kids, idd probably get both games for them, aswell as introducing them to some sports. Its very important for kids to exercise.
@Bobblefighter Well, you could go to wikipedia and read about it. I guess that is not an option, so ill tell you. There are many games refered to as fotball. However, there is only one type, where players are NOT alowed, on the field, to use their hands. In all other types of football, the players move the ball mostly with their hands. In MY OPINION, those games should go under a different name. Like Rugby, which also comes under the category "football", but is using a different name.
@krukur Oh really, starting this with an insult, hey? Maybe you should have the facts before you try to insult my apparent illiteracy, even though you have displayed it more than me. @Bobblefighter My sly insult come from the fact that you focus on the less important feature of my comment.
1.Football isnt as violent as the american football.
2.There are also many other sports that are hassard free.
3.Games also offer no danger, if propper games are provided by the parents. (i.e age related)
4. I just feel its quite silly that the name of an international sport shall be changed in favor of a "local game/sport. Its like calling cheese for poo, because cars are called cheese
@MrRodas777 Tthe British invented the term soccer so it could be used for a colloquial term. This term carried over to the other countries that call the sport soccer now.
@TJCuffe Actually, bringing up nazis and Jews is not a violation of Godwin's law, per se. Godwins law states that given enough time, and discussion or debate on the internet will inevitably lead to Nazis, the Holocaust, or something related being brought up. All he did was affirm Godwin's law.

That "600 something kids died from football"-argument was pretty stupid. If you consider how many people have been playing football since the 1930s it's a small small percentage. Besides any form of exercise carries a risk of injury, and the only other option (not doing anything at all) will definetly kill you even faster.
@Avatr That's a really decent point. However, most gamers I know, including myself, do a regular amount of fitness and other outdoor activities. It is those who remain indoors constantly, who suffer from an addiction, and addictions can be picked up much more likely from other outdoor sources, like drinking, drug taking and gambling. It's those people that need to be helped, not the regular gamers, even if they, like myself, game for up to 7 hours a day. I'm still healthy and sociable!
Ya i shoot guns played 5 years of football and i play video games occasionally with friends. I really dont like this show that Penn and teller have because it just seems to be so twisted to make a point that is highly irrelevant. They took a 10 year old kid and expected him to like shooting a gun? of course he wont. Neither would he like tackle football because he is small and would get pushed around. I agree with their point about video games. But creating a straw man argument was just stupid
@enburst actually, at 10 years old, i much enjoyed going and shooting guns with my dad, they weren't AR-15s, but none the less, i somewhat agree with you, their show is really biased, and they will make a point with any way they can, i watched this entire episode, and i liked it because it shows how no one really knows anything about the subject. They all just seem to struggle to get their point accross
the message is true, essantianlly all men enjoy a small about of violence. hundreds of years before the first game, men loved potenatially deadly sports, took place in dares, yearned to shoot guns,. its in our nature, but if anything, video games have turned us LESS violent, a kid who stay inside and plaays video games 100% of the time wont develop right, i mean i dnt mean to be mean but harrison looks like a complete pussy, i know i jumped at the change to shoot with my dad, ballence is key!
You could say the same about practically any physical activity. Swimming even. How many kids drowned while swimming in that same space of time? Probably a lot more.
@MercenarySlick No you couldn't. Football is a game, where the objective of the defense is to physically stop the offense from moving the ball, by throwing the full weight of their bodies at another human. Swimming is not a contact sport. the objective of swimming does not require you stop another player from moving.
Swimming still kills more people, whether or not it's a contact sport has no bearing on the result the physical activity. Demonizing football alone is stupid, you could use the same logic to say people should play video games instead of basically any physical activity that poses a risk. Swimming, riding a bike, rollerblading, mountain climbing etc...
Just to get things straight. P&T aren't advocating that football be cut. They are saying that it is dangerous. Less dangerous than video games. But for some reason people are willing to accept the actual violence in football, and condemn the virtual violence in video games.
The issue is a skewed double standard, not the fact that there is a sport with violence. In my opinion they aren't advocating for a ban on football.
@es20641 The issue, at least in my area, isn't helped by the fact that one student died while playing football recently. I don't recall a recent death from video games in my area, so I can easily imagine the less dangerous of the two.
@es20641 I think you meant to say 'more dangerous than video games'. And their point was definitely "If we're fine with kids actually getting hurt, why are we so worried about them playing video games?"
Something people need to realize is that banning guns and/or video games won't make a murderer less of a murderer. Anytime that a video game makes someone think they can kill in real life means they already had a terrible idea of right and wrong, and no ability to tell the difference between fake and real. These people will find ways to kill no matter what. They are psycopaths already, and need help. Other than locking them up before they do something, no ban will stop their psychotic behavior.
@Slavman24 is it that people should complain about football? What good does sitting at home shooting players for hours do besides killing your eyes and get you fat?
@KillenEMsoftly Sure it teaches some lessons...all sports can teach teamwork, leadership, etc, but so can video games...P&T are just saying why worry about pixels more than the physical world...
@shatfick i think it's more about the virtual representation of killing people...i mean i play COD and those fps games, and we kill 30 ppl with rocket launchers and shotguns...sure it doesn't really affect us but man that's really graphic, especially for kids. I remember when i first played GTA III when i was in elementary, not good
@KillenEMsoftly If you really need me to spell it out for you, its that we are putting too much blame on video games messing with children while other activities get away scot-free. Football was a great example due to the reasons this vid gave. Your free to re-watch it as many times as you like if its still fuzzy to you.
That's not really what Penn is getting at, He's comparing fake violence (video games) to real violence (football) I used to play football myself till I tore my ACL but that's besides the point. He's demonstrating what "Game Control" advocates are saying about video games, that they are saying that because people play violent video games, people are seeing an increase of violence. It's just bad logic essentially.
@KillenEMsoftly They aren't comparing video games to football directly. They are trying to rebuke the argument: "video games harm and make children violent and children need to play more sports/non-video-game-activities" by claiming that football (as an example) is just as or even more violent.
@KillenEMsoftly it's not about comparing it to football. it's not the activity they try to compare it's the reaction to the activity.
hurting imaginary people = bad but hurting real people who might even be your friend = good is such a ridicilusly moronis way to look at things that it's baffeling that the argument even exists.
as they said imagine video games came before football.... do you think football would be gloryfied the way it is today?
You're right, shit like that doesn't happen all the time in football. This is also true for video games, we dont see children killing their parents because they just committed murder virtually.
@KillenEMsoftly This vid isn't about that though and you could argue games devlope hand eye co-ordination and gamers minds have been proven to work slightly differently to other peoples, were better at using one thing to control another, which is turn is helping medicine deal with people with brain problems.
@theomega616 P&T is pushing that football is just about kids hitting each other...sure jocks aren't the smartest, but football does teach some valuable lessons.
@MironHoner I'm not saying it is a lot of deaths, but any deaths for no reason are unfortunate...They have the right to do it, I'm just saying it is waaaaay worse than pixels...
@Edward NS1 Yep, I grew up with the same violent games and I'm doing just fine. However, 2 people saying "hey, I turned out ok!" is not what I'd call scientific.
This whole time I've only been playing devil's advocate to make the point that THIS SPECIFIC VIDEO is on the same tier as FOX news, even if they're right.
Also, if it's not clear, I love violent video games and I'd be pissed if they were censored in any way. But youtube (and the majority internet in general) is one giant circlejerk where no one actually looks at both sides of an argument with equal merit. Videos like this are easy to agree with because these guys just sound right--not because they ARE right--because they're TV personalities.
@BricksAreFunYay The strongest argument against violent video games would target emotional damage in children. No one is comforted by the fact that video games won't break your kid's bones when the overall premise is to run around and shoot people for hours at a time. I can't speak on the matter of developmental damage because THAT is what Penn and Teller needed to address. Not this trivial straw man bullshit.
@kstalt Hi there liberal hipster! If you'll read my post, I ended with "I think it's bullshit and parents should be responsible." I don't agree with people who are against violent video games, fuck I play Bad Company 2 like it's my job. I'm saying that this video in particular tries really hard (and succeeds) to sound smart but doesn't address anything useful. Directly comparing the immediate risk of video games vs football is a dumb way to argue a point.
@redoxepk How is that a dumb way to argue a point? Both shooting games and football are war games, two teams fighting over land and objects. In video games, no actual people get hurt. In football, people get hurt and sometimes even die. How is that an unfair comparison?
But on topic, i'd say that video game violence is not as much an issue as, say, video game addiction, particularly when it leads to theft and child neglect.
Watching violence on TV or playing violent video games isn't nearly as contributing a factor as getting into actual brawls or worse
There is a feedback loop between what the body does and and what the mind learns. There is not enough correlation between playing a game and actually hurting someone.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This guy's argument is said convincingly, but it doesn't address the real issue. People complain about video games because they change the way people look at violence. After 1000 played hours of call of duty, it's likely that a 10-14 year old kid will have great enthusiasm for war and military combat. Football is violent, but not maliciously violent (as in killing people in stunning HD).
I think it's bullshit and parents should be responsible, but this video was unnecessary and dumb.
I have been playing violent video games for my whole childhood yet I don't feel the need to go on some killing rampage or the need to join the army. If anything it did the exact opposite made me want to stay away from the horrors of war etc.
If a child goes on some killing rampage its because the kid is probably mentally unstable.
Look at Japan their whole world basically revolves around video games yet they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
@iurhviusdfavhi lmao anyone can punch keys on a keyboard, you have to be born with athletic talent and build it over a lifetime, there's a difference. Don't delude yourself.
@offtheheazy6 That's like saying "anyone can kick a ball, to be a good gamer you have to be born with the reaction and strategy skills and build it over a lifetime." Please think before you post. Now, ofcourse football is better then video games because of the whole "if you don't excercise you'll die prematurely"-thing, but videogames require just as much, if not even more "talent" than football.
@offtheheazy6 That has to be the most idiotic statement in a lifetime. First off, no, not every athelete is born with athletic talent. Most athletic people obtain their talent through years and years of focused training. And secondly, no, not anyone can "punch keys on a keyboard", as you like to put it, either. Same rule applies to these people. I'd like to see you grab SC and go even against a low class player. He will probably destroy you, just "punching a bunch of keys". gg no re
@Teheleri Are you serious? Of course you have to be born with it, if youre 5 feet tall and naturally skinny there's no way you could play professional football, or likely any sport for that matter. Don't talk about things outside Starcraft, you don't know shit. It's a computer game, stop taking it so seriously...
@offtheheazy6 Now you're in sports. And you're talking about characteristics, not talent. Not every sport requires you to have the height of a basketball player per say to be called an athlete. But even then, a tall person is not automatically an athlete if they lack said talent. I believe the only person here that doesn't know shit is you my friend. Of course a guy without arms could never play starcraft either, but I guess that would be contradictory to your logic of everyone can. Dumbass...
@Teheleri Are you stupid? Height is an advantage in every sport, except maybe horse racing and some other obscure sport, and to be the best at a professional level you need every advantage at your disposal, both genetic and otherwise. At the college level they won't even consider your talent unless to meet the reasonable requirements of height, weight, speed, and strength. Go back to your computer games, dumbass...
@offtheheazy6 Someone's perspective of sport is reeaaaaaally limited here.
As well as the understanding that everything you just named, has absolutely nothing to do with talent.
Not to forget that weight, speed and strength are trainable.
Thanks for making yourself look like a total retard, I guess the laugh is on everyone except you, fucking american incest bred!! Hilarious, omfg! You just made my day, especially with your constant pc nagging ahaha, comes to see what a douche you are! xD
@Teheleri Holy shit, you are so painfully retarded and embarrassing that I am washing my hands of this...you seriously need a reality check, and I sure as hell am not going to bother to educate you...you win, live the rest of your life forever alone in front of your computer screen, wondering why you can't get laid...
@offtheheazy6 You're a moron, and so braindead you can't even bother to come up with a single insult yourself, just repeating the ones I've already said. My argument still stands, you're just talking trash for the sake of starting shit on the internet. I don't know who needs a reality check here, going as low as to assume crap about someones life, but if you can live happy with the assumption that everyone except you has a miserable life, then do that. But quit pestering us normal people. faggot
@Teheleri you be trolling, because nobody is that retarded. You are such a hypocrite and you're talking so far out of your ass it's starting to smell like shit in here. You don't know shit about sports, you don't know how to argue or to even say something half intelligent, you must literally be 12. I'm pretty sure you need this one more than I do so whatever, you win, just don't pull the trigger, ok? Or do, just make sure you lay down a tarp so nobody has to clean your lack of brain matter
@offtheheazy6 Boring, try to come up with something original for a change? Or at least try to back up that completely flawed argument of yours, but I wish you good luck because even a genius couldn't pull you out of the neck deep shit you've put yourself in. :)
Otherwise, just shut that shitmouth of yours and stop wasting everyone's time with your frustrated little life which is probably caused by your lack of intellect / lack of a reasonable job / tiny penis / whatever.
@IIReJeCtSII Macs can play games too (i.e. Starcraft II and WoW (Btw, thank you TotalBiscuit for showing us the video), Portal 2, etc...) and can get Windows on it so you can play Black Ops and other stuff.
@TheMordru How about no? Because my father has played video games for 20 years, and he is one of the most healthy people I know. Video games don't cause obesity, fuckface.
Ok how about 20 years from now we do a study and see how many kids who sit in front of video games every day die from obesity and related causes. My guess would be thousands.
I love it one side of the argument presents itself well, and then the other side just comes in and kicks the first side's ass.

They took a 10 year old kid and expected him to like shooting a gun? of course he wont. Neither would he like tackle football because he is small and would get pushed around. I agree with their point about video games. But creating a straw man argument was just stupid
enburst 7 months ago
@enburst actually, at 10 years old, i much enjoyed going and shooting guns with my dad, they weren't AR-15s, but none the less, i somewhat agree with you, their show is really biased, and they will make a point with any way they can, i watched this entire episode, and i liked it because it shows how no one really knows anything about the subject. They all just seem to struggle to get their point accross
mkhpsyco 7 months ago
@SLAYER3193 That's the point.
These types of activities have no measurable impact on violent behaviour, provided parents are actually doing their job.

the message is true, essantianlly all men enjoy a small about of violence. hundreds of years before the first game, men loved potenatially deadly sports, took place in dares, yearned to shoot guns,. its in our nature, but if anything, video games have turned us LESS violent, a kid who stay inside and plaays video games 100% of the time wont develop right, i mean i dnt mean to be mean but harrison looks like a complete pussy, i know i jumped at the change to shoot with my dad, ballence is key!
xXxdeathadderxXx 7 months ago
You could say the same about practically any physical activity. Swimming even. How many kids drowned while swimming in that same space of time? Probably a lot more.
MercenarySlick 7 months ago
@MercenarySlick No you couldn't. Football is a game, where the objective of the defense is to physically stop the offense from moving the ball, by throwing the full weight of their bodies at another human. Swimming is not a contact sport. the objective of swimming does not require you stop another player from moving.
88Miniwolf 7 months ago
@88Miniwolf That's a stupid argument to make.
MercenarySlick 7 months ago
Video games should not replace physical activity for kids. Play sports, get small injuries at time, you will survive, its part of life...
But I think this was more about how video games dont make kids more violent unless they are already living in a unsuited environment for kids.

In my opinion they aren't advocating for a ban on football.
es20641 7 months ago 60
@es20641 The issue, at least in my area, isn't helped by the fact that one student died while playing football recently. I don't recall a recent death from video games in my area, so I can easily imagine the less dangerous of the two.
ChaotyxOne 7 months ago
@es20641 I think you meant to say 'more dangerous than video games'. And their point was definitely "If we're fine with kids actually getting hurt, why are we so worried about them playing video games?"

Something people need to realize is that banning guns and/or video games won't make a murderer less of a murderer. Anytime that a video game makes someone think they can kill in real life means they already had a terrible idea of right and wrong, and no ability to tell the difference between fake and real. These people will find ways to kill no matter what. They are psycopaths already, and need help. Other than locking them up before they do something, no ban will stop their psychotic behavior.

you can argue football teaches character, leadership, discipline.....and of course keeps kids fit.
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly And you're completely missing the point of this vid...keep playing football, sport.
Slavman24 7 months ago
@Slavman24 is it that people should complain about football? What good does sitting at home shooting players for hours do besides killing your eyes and get you fat?
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly Sure it teaches some lessons...all sports can teach teamwork, leadership, etc, but so can video games...P&T are just saying why worry about pixels more than the physical world...
shatfick 7 months ago
@shatfick i think it's more about the virtual representation of killing people...i mean i play COD and those fps games, and we kill 30 ppl with rocket launchers and shotguns...sure it doesn't really affect us but man that's really graphic, especially for kids. I remember when i first played GTA III when i was in elementary, not good
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly Well, that's up to the parents...
shatfick 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly If you really need me to spell it out for you, its that we are putting too much blame on video games messing with children while other activities get away scot-free. Football was a great example due to the reasons this vid gave. Your free to re-watch it as many times as you like if its still fuzzy to you.
Slavman24 7 months ago
@Slavman24 football though??? Really....football? Do you watch football? P&T act like everybody in the football pads get concussions and broken bones
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly
RedSuit1 7 months ago
@RedSuit1 i see that point, but i don't see the comparison to football
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly They aren't comparing video games to football directly. They are trying to rebuke the argument: "video games harm and make children violent and children need to play more sports/non-video-game-activities" by claiming that football (as an example) is just as or even more violent.
WoWrowrin 7 months ago
@WoWrowrin i see
KillenEMsoftly 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly it's not about comparing it to football. it's not the activity they try to compare it's the reaction to the activity.
hurting imaginary people = bad but hurting real people who might even be your friend = good is such a ridicilusly moronis way to look at things that it's baffeling that the argument even exists.
as they said imagine video games came before football.... do you think football would be gloryfied the way it is today?

RedSuit1 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly Please at least try to read my post.
You're right, shit like that doesn't happen all the time in football. This is also true for video games, we dont see children killing their parents because they just committed murder virtually.
Slavman24 7 months ago
@KillenEMsoftly This vid isn't about that though and you could argue games devlope hand eye co-ordination and gamers minds have been proven to work slightly differently to other peoples, were better at using one thing to control another, which is turn is helping medicine deal with people with brain problems.
theomega616 7 months ago

Also, if it's not clear, I love violent video games and I'd be pissed if they were censored in any way. But youtube (and the majority internet in general) is one giant circlejerk where no one actually looks at both sides of an argument with equal merit. Videos like this are easy to agree with because these guys just sound right--not because they ARE right--because they're TV personalities.
(sounds a little like FOX, no?)
redoxepk 7 months ago
@BricksAreFunYay The strongest argument against violent video games would target emotional damage in children. No one is comforted by the fact that video games won't break your kid's bones when the overall premise is to run around and shoot people for hours at a time. I can't speak on the matter of developmental damage because THAT is what Penn and Teller needed to address. Not this trivial straw man bullshit.
redoxepk 7 months ago
@kstalt Hi there liberal hipster! If you'll read my post, I ended with "I think it's bullshit and parents should be responsible." I don't agree with people who are against violent video games, fuck I play Bad Company 2 like it's my job. I'm saying that this video in particular tries really hard (and succeeds) to sound smart but doesn't address anything useful. Directly comparing the immediate risk of video games vs football is a dumb way to argue a point.
But hey, fuck you, guy.
redoxepk 7 months ago
@redoxepk How is that a dumb way to argue a point? Both shooting games and football are war games, two teams fighting over land and objects. In video games, no actual people get hurt. In football, people get hurt and sometimes even die. How is that an unfair comparison?

games do not cause violence they create geeks and gamers who will be to busy doing there thing to do anything violent
MrCheesedogim 7 months ago
TB brought me here too :D
But on topic, i'd say that video game violence is not as much an issue as, say, video game addiction, particularly when it leads to theft and child neglect.
Watching violence on TV or playing violent video games isn't nearly as contributing a factor as getting into actual brawls or worse
There is a feedback loop between what the body does and and what the mind learns. There is not enough correlation between playing a game and actually hurting someone.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This guy's argument is said convincingly, but it doesn't address the real issue. People complain about video games because they change the way people look at violence. After 1000 played hours of call of duty, it's likely that a 10-14 year old kid will have great enthusiasm for war and military combat. Football is violent, but not maliciously violent (as in killing people in stunning HD).
I think it's bullshit and parents should be responsible, but this video was unnecessary and dumb.
redoxepk 7 months ago
@redoxepk MMMmmmmm no... Just... No, come back when you have an argument that wasn't leeched off of fox news.
kstalt 7 months ago
@redoxepk

TheAzure4 7 months ago
@offtheheazy6 That's like saying "anyone can kick a ball, to be a good gamer you have to be born with the reaction and strategy skills and build it over a lifetime." Please think before you post. Now, ofcourse football is better then video games because of the whole "if you don't excercise you'll die prematurely"-thing, but videogames require just as much, if not even more "talent" than football.
Avatr 7 months ago
@offtheheazy6 That has to be the most idiotic statement in a lifetime. First off, no, not every athelete is born with athletic talent. Most athletic people obtain their talent through years and years of focused training. And secondly, no, not anyone can "punch keys on a keyboard", as you like to put it, either. Same rule applies to these people. I'd like to see you grab SC and go even against a low class player. He will probably destroy you, just "punching a bunch of keys". gg no re
Teheleri 7 months ago
@Teheleri Are you serious? Of course you have to be born with it, if youre 5 feet tall and naturally skinny there's no way you could play professional football, or likely any sport for that matter. Don't talk about things outside Starcraft, you don't know shit. It's a computer game, stop taking it so seriously...
offtheheazy6 7 months ago
@offtheheazy6 Now you're in sports. And you're talking about characteristics, not talent. Not every sport requires you to have the height of a basketball player per say to be called an athlete. But even then, a tall person is not automatically an athlete if they lack said talent. I believe the only person here that doesn't know shit is you my friend. Of course a guy without arms could never play starcraft either, but I guess that would be contradictory to your logic of everyone can. Dumbass...
Teheleri 7 months ago
@Teheleri Are you stupid? Height is an advantage in every sport, except maybe horse racing and some other obscure sport, and to be the best at a professional level you need every advantage at your disposal, both genetic and otherwise. At the college level they won't even consider your talent unless to meet the reasonable requirements of height, weight, speed, and strength. Go back to your computer games, dumbass...
offtheheazy6 7 months ago
@offtheheazy6 Someone's perspective of sport is reeaaaaaally limited here.
As well as the understanding that everything you just named, has absolutely nothing to do with talent.
Not to forget that weight, speed and strength are trainable.

@offtheheazy6 You're a moron, and so braindead you can't even bother to come up with a single insult yourself, just repeating the ones I've already said. I don't know who needs a reality check here, going as low as to assume crap about someones life, but if you can live happy with the assumption that everyone except you has a miserable life, then do that. But quit pestering us normal people. faggot
