I'm considering a Giant but have never owned a nonshedding dog that needs to be clipped before. are the eyebrows and beard being left longer purely for fashion or is there some other reason for it? Personally Id want my dogs hair cut to an even length everywhere?
@AAAmar It is actually simply style. I am a pet groomer and a few clients with giants ask me to shave brows and beard off for sanitary reasons and they are much happier with them being easier to keep clean.
@poxiihontiiz I use the scissors for the ear hair that is at the surface. This hair is very sensitive to pulling and rooted much differently than in the canal. Giant ear canals are large enough I usually use ear power and pull the internal hair with my fingers.
Great video! As a fellow giant owner, (and a few other dogs thrown in :), i found this to be very helpful. I do all my own grooming and am self taught but believe you can always learn something new. I cheat a lot by using my thining sheers on the eye brows :)
@hb1010190 thank Jim! I've been grooming for over 30 years and am always learning something new! I too use thinners now and then on eyebrows. They are the "forgiving" tool
I used Laube for 15 yrs but for the past 10 years only use Andis. Several models, AG, super 2 speed, etc, any and all Professional models of Andis pet clippers have been put to hard use in my grooming shop.
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for posting this series, they were great. Your dog looks fantastic! If only all of the dogs we groom were this good. :)
@petgroomer101 you are correct, Grace no longers shows, she was retired from the ring and has produced several champions. I do not put my dogs through the stripping process once they are finished campaigning. Giants are, however, clippered on cheeks, throat, bottom and ears for the show ring, unlike the standard and the mini that require some stripping in those areas instead.
How can a dog with such a poor coat, that doesn't fit the standard of a schnauzer, be a champion?? It looks more like a poodle to me, a good schnauzer coat should be stripped, unless it has a poor quality like this " champion"
@belisarda because her coat is reflecting oddly with the lighting you are unable to see her rich course texture. She actually has a very european jacket. I notice the same thing in the video, the reflections make her coat appear soft, which it is not.
Thank you SO much! I was so tired of groomers saying "yes I can groom a standard schnauzer," and getting a naked dog back. So I decided to do it on my own after watching your videos. My boy Tanq is as handsome as ever and looking show ready (even though he's not hand stripped). I'm saving $80 a groom. THANK YOU!! Oh and Gracie...you're a good girl, beautiful!
Wonderful! As a pet groomer of 30 plus years I have always encouraged anyone wanting to groom for themselves to try it. You can always take another look the next day and decide to improve on something. You will continue to get better and better at it. Great that you are willing to try and happy with the results! By the way, I am totally self-taught.
I love your videos! can you record on how to use a stripping knife? where can I find one and which one is best for a giant schnauzer. Which clipper machine do you recomend and what # of blade do you use on your giants. I love your shears but looking for some that are not so expensive. Can you help?
Thank you! I will work on a video demonstrating the different stripping options. I prefer the Andis clipper. You might find a good used on ebay. A website that has a good grooming demo page can be found by googling Draxpark. Once their championship is finished I usually clip the pattern with a 7F.
@sparklinmakeup Just found an excellent dvd which would answer any questions you might still have about the use of stripping knives and correct grooming for a giant schnauzer. It is published by sonnen productions and the title is "stripping broken coated breeds" featuring Christine Lietzau. I highly recommend it to anyone, experienced or beginner.
Thank you! I have a Standard Schnauzer and I'm tired of his bad grooming so now I'm going to attempt it my self. I'd love to see how you do the finishings. Great video and through it all I just wanted to smooooosh Grace's face. She's gorgeous!

Is this a retired champion?. Because you cannot show a "shaved" Schnauzer in AKC. I've been showing champion dogs for a long time.
