  • Dundee was the Jute capital of the world

  • Jute is harvested from Jute plant which usually grows about 15 ft. Bangladesh has been the largest producer of jute. Once jute was the largest export of bengal. Under the British rule jute must had been exported to UK. It's nice to see the connection between Bengli farmers and the jute mill workers in UK when they will never know each other but they have been bonded with the fiber of jute.

  • @alokdi1 I suppose that was the Economic idea of the Colonist having Raw material garnered from a far, then transported of back to a remote industrial base for processing after which finished product was then exported to the very Colony from with the parent product came. even today very little changes. both sets of workers were exploited by for the betterment of another social class.. I do respect the struggles of both sets of workers who laboured under such harsh conditions... great song...

  • @malachy1847 Exactly. Most of the time blames are put on nations, instead, should be put on certain group of people who exist in every nations and they are capable enough to breed some of their own as authorities to give them institutional support. Thanks for your insight.

  • I did some genealogy in Dundee and every single link over the last hundred years were jute mill workers. Workers of the world unite. I'm proud of them all.

  • Beautiful... my dad and granda' both worked at Cox's Mill.

  • To my everlasting shame, I have to ask, what was jute? What was it used for and would I recognize it if I saw it?

Apologies in advance for my shameful ignorance!

  • Jute bags, Jute string comes to my mind. I saw a fella sing this on scotlands songbook n he played classical guitar, such a powerful song. I shall learn it.

  • sure its nothing to be ashamed of1 THE BACKING ON MOST CARPETS AND RUGS HAVE A JUTE BACKING,A COURSE FIBER MADE FROM THE HEMP PLANT, NOW DONT GO TRYING TO SMOKE YER RUGS

  • @DonegalRaymie201 The US in the late 19th century owes Dundee a big thanks. Most of the inside of the canopies on the waggons used by all those families who moved west were made of jute.

  • The Lowland Folk Four did a fabulous cover in 66, I wish the "Brown's", would post their songs, they were so very good. I've got the L.P. but it's the original and scratched badly. "Eh'll tell the boaby" their first album, where are the Brown Brothers? "there's no much pleasure livin, off a' 10 an 9".

  • Och, ah wuz greetin' wi' the tears runnin' doon ma puss. If you're ever in Dundee check out the Verdant Works Museum - a working jute mill.

  • Brilliant rendition.

  • i remember as a young boy performing this song along with the road and the miles to dundee at my primary school at our annual christmas show. each class would have a show to perform and ours one year was these songs celebrating dundees jute mill heritage. there is a monument in the toon commemorating this subject with the words to the song on the monument. it fills me with pride and an immense amount of sadness. long live bonnie dundee.
