@lairdriver i know fl is a DAW like any other, its your personal choice to choose one, but imo, the reason why fl get used that much is because of the many plugins and vst's while they don't even know what a vst is ... i dont say i can remake every vst like for example in reason wich is possible if you know how to but i rather dont use someone's presets wich has been used by so many others... fl is great yes if you wanne be producing tracks without realy taking the effort to learn about it...
i make all my music on reason too...and im about to get signed to a label, not to be bragging or anything, but im sure a lot of people can learn from me and they can give me some tips as well. but i would like to make video tutorials of my stuff. how do i make a video like this?
yeah that's the only problem when tech comes out, the anoraks and geeks spend more time bitchin' about the tech and which is wack, rather than using it and producing great grooves...now prove me wrong! I'm into tryin Jazz and Bossa Nova's and Bebop out, wit licks and backbeats from DnB and Dub trax for fun ..laterz
@ROMANporno69 If you were trying to keep from sounding like an uneducated idiot, you failed miserably. Again. Sounds like you fail on a regular basis. Poor guy.
FL is a kids toy compared to Reason. Combine PropHeads Record and you got the bomb! (enabling audio recording/mastering at last) re wire Reason with Sonar 8 and you definately starving to death cos you aint leavin the room for nuthin! Reason. its an addiction.
Reason has better built-in synths, apart from Syrtrus, but FL is considerably more versatile and complex than Reason.
Even the Propellerheads themselves will tell you they designed Reason primarily to used a plugin inside more complex DAW environments such as FL Studio.
How many real players out there use FL for music production... Now start counting the ones using Reason. You'll be an ol'man by the time you finish. The opertunity to create new sounds in Reason is pretty much limitless. With Reason all you need is imagination!
Im happy with reason 4.0. I have created some unbelievable sounds that got my friends very impress. I love it and my next step is to learn how to play the piano. I love music. But Hip Hop is my thing. Peace
In reality, its made to do anything. Most demonstrations are set up to do it in 4/4 but for example, I just made a track in 3/4 last night and had no problem adjusting it to 3 beats to the measure as opposed to 4. Its not like garage band where you are given a bunch of loops in 4/4 and are forced to arrange them, you are given a piano roll so its easily possible to get whatever time signature you need.
I'am a beginner of making hip hop beats. I just bought reason 4.0. The sounds on reason is crazy. It's like you have the instrument exactly in front of you. I like a lot that i look up youtube tutorial everyday to learn about reason 4.0. Im also even thinking of going to school to learn more. Peace
Reason is the truth. when i first started i used fruity loops. i still have fl 1. i think they both are equaly compatible based on your skill & your ears. & oh yeah reason refills can be stored in fruity loops
I think FL Studio is still behind (by a lot) when it comes to available, quality sounds.... but it's sequencer beats Reason, if you're into sequencing beats like that....
For live performance, non-standard looping, and versatility out-the-box... Reason still takes it in my book.
when it come to production and song mixing, FL is way better than reason, and, you can use all reason sounds by using rewire, Reason is just a rack with sounds. Im not saying that it sounds bad, it has excelent grooves , loops and sounds, but it doesn't even support Vst, once you know what you can do with FL you won't regreat. FL 9 is out now.
I use Logic Studio as my AU/ wrapped VST host and can use most VSTs that way. I just think Fruity Loops is mainly only effective for sequencing and standard looping. Plus the included sounds are garbage (imo)... To each their own though, a great producer will make shit hot even on the worst system.
I agree with you, Logic is way better than FL, FL cannot compete with programs like pro tools, nuendo, or Logic, but when it comes to production, and setting ideas fast and easily, FL is great for that. Although it sucks in recording audio. Definetely better than Reason.
There are no options for recording audio into Reason, so yeah I guess FL could be considered better in only that sense... oh come now dont be a dick. hes just a noob. he doesnt understand whats happening around him. like in the matrix, his mind is not yet ready to be unplugged from his minds own world.
this is very true but reason is far superior compared to fruity loops it may take longer to understand the basics but once you gain a little knowlage there's nothing you're imagination and that knowlage cannot do!!! fruity loops was a step i took before using reason and to be honest i wish id not bothered if only i had someone to guide me but i didnt so spent a year or so wasting my time with FL which didnt really teach me anything about lfo's, frequency's or mastering.
I've been using FL Studio Professional XXL 8 and Reason 4, and bought them both (at a reasonable price through school.) I'd say though, that despite the simplicity of this particular video, that FL Studio is better for throwing together demos to record live later, while Reason is much better for sequencing electronic music with fully customizable sounds.

i've been using reason for years. i love it but i'm so irritated by the inability to records analog signals such as vocals and guitar. also a few lame bugs in version 4 that piss me off. not enough room to get into them here
Yeah, Reason 4 let me down severely on that. I think there'll be so much criticism about it because REASON is basically trying to stay as an underdog next to big daddies like CUBASE and PROTOOLS.
Love it, hate it, use it, want to smash it. Nice sounds, still clutsy. Find one phat sounding normal snare out of the hundreds in drum expansion and stock kits? I like to arrange on the fly while the song is playing, not stop, copy, paste, play again, creative workflow killer. Sequencer start and stop points require edit every time to avoid note cut-off. Reason as a synth engine into Live 7, about it for me. Maybe it's my knowledge of reasonizms? I dunno. High hope for 4, let down again.
Its quite simple - just get yourself a copy of recycle (£70) and download audacity (free) so you can chop audio out of tracks that are longer than 4-5mins that Recycle wont accept. Then save anything you chop up as a REX2 file. SIMPLE and still way cheaper than a decent version of Cubase/Logic!
Live just digest mp3, wav, nki, vst, vsti, even fruity or reason are fine under live slavery. (check tracks on 'reverbnation loturoot', those beat in live are so easy to do)
No attempt to say that it's a bad software, just that a few things could be improved.
i got reason 4, this shit is bullshit, regroove is a waste of time. all it is usefull for is for drum variations which shouldn't be the bulk of any song, just little addons here and there, which can be accomplished with redrum by doing some tweeks but still, i'd rather use the nnxt drum kits and use my drum pad to just regroove my own shit, plus its funner that way.
yeah, the sounds that come with it are lame, the synths are okay though. and you can use your own samples. but definitely, Grooves are way over looked. Especially user created grooves. Most of my tracks are quantized to a real drummers groove. sounds way more believable.
You are wrong. It depends entirely what you´re after. A techno beat must be quantized hard to get the robotic feeling, and realistic drumbeats is more likely to sound robotic if quantized to hard.
I think you're right here that if its quantized it takes out the feel of it, BUT chances are if you have to go to reason to get a drum beat then you're not a drummer, or you're programming the beats by hand anyway instead of just playing them. Sometimes just quantizing the main beat notes helps alot. But yeh it can sound horrible if it isnt quantized
Hmmm im not so sure about that, Techno and Tech House these days sound a lot less rigid with more human sounding rythmns (although the actual sounds used maybe still be electronic). Its like a real drummer playing an electronic drum kit, not a robot playing a real drum kit!
Reason with all its wonderfull new devices for triggering its internal instruments realy did need to have inprovements made to its sequencer because Reason can not output note data to the master sequencer it is rewired to.(no midi out)
So a more powerfull sequencer is a real positive improvement IMHO.
not sure why, or if i'm doing something wrong, but the regroove mixer always sounds like shit whenever i apply a groove...not sure waht i could be doing wrong...

I dunno. High hope for 4, let down again.

reason will be better when it will stop this 'dont touch my file' policy, it's quite a closed technology not really flexible.
Utroll 4 years ago
Still cannot add an simple audio file like a singer on your track nor export a midi file.
Dont even talk about VST or Vsti.
That's a game not a software. (Although synth are nice)
Utroll 4 years ago
Its quite simple - just get yourself a copy of recycle (£70) and download audacity (free) so you can chop audio out of tracks that are longer than 4-5mins that Recycle wont accept. Then save anything you chop up as a REX2 file. SIMPLE and still way cheaper than a decent version of Cubase/Logic!
lejaimlefunk 4 years ago
Way cheaper than Cubase/Logic/proT for sure
but what about ableton :)
Live just digest mp3, wav, nki, vst, vsti, even fruity or reason are fine under live slavery. (check tracks on 'reverbnation loturoot', those beat in live are so easy to do)
No attempt to say that it's a bad software, just that a few things could be improved.
Keep on testing lejaimlefunk and all the best.

I use ableton with reasons 4 great combo
skibeatz 4 years ago
i got reason 4, this shit is bullshit, regroove is a waste of time. all it is usefull for is for drum variations which shouldn't be the bulk of any song, just little addons here and there, which can be accomplished with redrum by doing some tweeks but still, i'd rather use the nnxt drum kits and use my drum pad to just regroove my own shit, plus its funner that way.
rawdney88 4 years ago
do u actually know what your talking about?
jamiefisher2006 2 years ago
yeah, the sounds that come with it are lame, the synths are okay though. and you can use your own samples. but definitely, Grooves are way over looked. Especially user created grooves. Most of my tracks are quantized to a real drummers groove. sounds way more believable.
nativeops 4 years ago
drums shouldn't be quantized at all... theres no way to quantize to a "real drummers groove"
ghostlkp 4 years ago
You are wrong. It depends entirely what you´re after. A techno beat must be quantized hard to get the robotic feeling, and realistic drumbeats is more likely to sound robotic if quantized to hard.
kitsune2222 4 years ago
well yea my bad since i do hip hop production i dont quantize but you are right some styles are different
ghostlkp 4 years ago
I think you're right here that if its quantized it takes out the feel of it, BUT chances are if you have to go to reason to get a drum beat then you're not a drummer, or you're programming the beats by hand anyway instead of just playing them. Sometimes just quantizing the main beat notes helps alot. But yeh it can sound horrible if it isnt quantized
cryingindian 4 years ago
Hmmm im not so sure about that, Techno and Tech House these days sound a lot less rigid with more human sounding rythmns (although the actual sounds used maybe still be electronic). Its like a real drummer playing an electronic drum kit, not a robot playing a real drum kit!

Reason with all its wonderfull new devices for triggering its internal instruments realy did need to have inprovements made to its sequencer because Reason can not output note data to the master sequencer it is rewired to.(no midi out)
So a more powerfull sequencer is a real positive improvement IMHO.
hollandturbine 4 years ago
Bout time they did an upgrade to the sequencer. That's sweet.
