The harmonies are really interesting in this song, and the sound is so sparse and subtle and the drum sound with the kettle drum sticks is perfect - very impressive.
The pitch on the sound recording is more accurate but still love this. Both the album and EP are excellent-bought them after seeing the Glastonbury tapes and haven't stopped playing them.
Can anybody tell me why it is that on every video by a female band/artist their looks are commented on instead of what they actually sound like? Or that if like Warpaint, they're actually pretty bloody good they have to be compared to a male band? Or have comments that are totally patronising - dude, she's a girl - and she can actually play her instrument..OMG!!
@isupposeitdoes actually, people comment on the sexiness/appearance of male bands all the time. These male bands do considerably less, often, of highlighting their sex appeal compared to Warpaint. Do we have assholes making a big deal of it for those bands and performers? Nope. So really, get over yourself.
@RCTPatriot75 Also just recently during late night when I lay down on the couch to sleep, been catching some crazy good stuff on Carson Daly's show, surprising to me. Atmosphere just played at the Greek and they filmed that, and Thievery Corporation is supposed to be on tonight, can't wait to see how that is.
@jamflip If it weren't for Jools, I may never have heard of Warpaint and life would have been utterly incomplete! They're playing at Roisín Dubh, Galway 25th of August. Just imagine, I may even get to say hello to Jenny Lee!!!!!!
Arctic Monkeys were excellent on LWJ but I have to say, Warpaint just blew me away!!!!. The bass playing is out of this world, not to mention the stunning bassist, haunting melody and kick ass drumming. Best band in AGES!!!!
@Just8eatit not sure where you'll get the whole episode but i can tell you it was the sixth of nine. Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, Alison Krauss and Gappy Ranks (who was also brilliant) were also on the bill. I had a look through Later with Jules web page on BBC.co.uk but they're not showing that episode anymore,
Mmm, saw them in Feb 10'. Besides great music I also got to enjoy a closeup of the bra-less bassist jumping up and down :] It was enjoyable to say the least.
I dont know about polly but they do seem to remind me of nirvana. I think its there presence. they perform they were just playing and a crowd just happened to appear and be like " ooh, they sound nice!". lol its cool :D it makes you feel comfortable.
Maybe the vocals sound a little off because they were nervous..? I mean, they are playing on Jools Holland's show, on TV... that's kind of a big exposure for bands, right? :/
@opramen1 - I disagree.. I watched this on the tele in HD through my amp & not so cheap headphones, and it sounded excellent. Imo the Jools-engineers worked hard to make it sound the way it was..; very clean & balanced.
There's also plenty bass & drum, though it is all staged kinda wide & it might flatten without decent kit. But even in this vid it's pretty much all there..
@chillesman200191. Well I'm seeing them soon and will be going with an open mind. I won't judge them soley on this one performance of course. Everyone has bad days after all. As I said, I'm just hoping they live up to all their hype!
@opramen1. I agree with you about the drums and bass not being loud enough but imo that just exposed the weak vocals even more. I would go as far as saying she was a bit out of tune in parts.
The drummer (Stella?) really impresses me though.
I was watching this last night and I couldn't help but think that the drums and especially the bass weren't quite loud enough (and that's what drives the song). I don't think the vocals sound bad, just lost and feel kind of, out there on their own.
Also as has been mentioned this song doesn't sound as good with bits chopped out of it; but of course we had to listen to Arctic Monkeys dragging out their latest line of shit instead of having a longer performance from Warpaint.
@opramen1 I immediately downloaded their album upon hearing this performane last night and agree based on the studio version having a 'fuller' sound. I will be buying this album next week.
However, no need to have a go at Arctic Monkeys. We all know they were very good last night and are a superb band.
@BonJ2211 The Studio Version of Elephants is way better than the version they brought on Jools, indeed ;) but Arctic Monkeys are frightening me, in the way that they seem to become more and more some copy of Queens or smth.. I just hope they'll do whatever they want, if they really want to make this kind of music I'll support em cause they're still great :)
@DarkAngelEU tbh i dnt even understand how pppl think arctic monkeys are sounding like QoS - monkkeys have always had their own style - and half of the songs on this album seem to be like... i dno soft songs i.e piledriver, serenade, hellcats and yeah warpaint brilliant - i like how their new sound is broadening out. i think they shd just do a double album next - like 26 songs just knocking out a wide range of things, old and new styles. love double albums lol oh and warpaint is bloody brilliant
@okyoulot I agree that this wasn't a great performance! however, Its the first time i've been disappointed by their performance in 2 years! If you look at every other shows, its insanely good!
Just got my ticket to see them live. This was an awful performance, sorry. I hope they don't normally sound like this live and I've not wasted my money :(
I'll just have to wait and see if all the hype surrounding this band is deserved.
@okyoulot awful?? are you serious.. this is a great performance. Am going to see them tomorrow and can't wait. never mind the hype and form an opinion for yourself.
I've recently purchased the album "the fool" and its awsome!

It's sad and ironic that we have to rely on Jools to put on the talented American bands.

The vocals were definitely out of tune in parts, which, along with the chopped parts and the bad mixing, detracted from the song a bit. Tune though.
JelZeb 10 months ago
What are some of you talking about the vocals being out of tune. Am I listening to the same performance? Sounds great to me.
And anyway who gives a shit It's not about perfect pitch it's about an awesome tune.
Sad they had to cut it to ribbons to suit TV though.
