  • This song is great, and the audience is pub patrons, so obviously more interested in chatting up each other than this superb music. What a shame. I guess New Scots are the same as Old Scots.

  • AH how is she holding herself it's atrocious but the song is boring and i am not going to press the dislike button since i decided to listen to it so ...

  • does it really make a difference how the fuck she holds her wrist??? I mean really? She sounds good. That's all that matters. Stop hating.

  • Yeah. Left wrist bad. And I can't tell from this vid but the way her right wrist moves it looks like her thumb's locked.

  • She holds her bow wrong. Her wrist shouldn't look like that.

  • @aNiMeCrAzEeE911 dude youre stupid i play fiddle shes holding it right your just blind

  • what is all this nonsense about the left wrist? I play fiddlle and I really don't have any issues with her wrist...purists anyone? Hoiwever as someone who plays pubs I recognize the slightly bored and dejected onstage attitude, even as they are playing well--no point slagging a pub audience though,|(I'll agree that 3:18's ass is nothing to write home about) the question is why put this video out when there's so much distraction in the mix?

  • Wow. Just watched the vid of her at 7 and now this. Who could have guessed she would also have such a great singing voice!

  • who else here agree's that this girl (now probably 17?) should have her own fan page on facebook? i think so, cuz i'm amazed at the fact that she was better than i am now when she was 7 :)

  • @lavenderscent30 lol will you join it?

  • She has one of the most beautiful and talented voices I've heard for someone so young. I was very impressed in this song, too. I really love listening to it. :D Very pretty and perfect to listen to while I'm relaxing outside. <3

  • She's so talented! She has such a l ovely voice and lays the violin beautifully. Yes, I agree how those people in the background can make such "noise" when there's such beautiful music playing.

  • Laura: It's a Grey day in cape Breton... I am checking out your progress.... You have grown to be a lovely young lady. And a talented one too. Enjoy!

  • her left wrist is he most annoying thing

  • @jellyjenny511 Yeah, I agree, but maybe fiddlers do that?

  • She has vibrant voice mix that with her talent on violin, you get a nice performance like this. If only the idiots on the back ground stop blabbing and keep it down. I know its a bar but come on perhaps pay attention and enjoy something other than the BS conversation.

  • Very nice, good song, nice voice.

  • is she the 7yo little girl from the other video??? (the one in the pink outfit)

  • Ok. There's some definate talent here folks. Laura, don't stop your pursuit - we're watching.

  • Ist das die selbe wo es auch ein viedeo mit gibt?

  • She's talented!

and I love the song. :D

  • Very good, she can sing great as well.

  • Liz Carroll's got that too , and is a phenom on her own...

  • Pizza wrist XD

  • ahhhhhhhhhh her wrist! im getting a twitch lol. she is good sounding though

  • Haha I was thinking the same thing

  • Well, if her left wrist annoys certain posters here, mine would turn them into serial killers.

  • She does have what my teacher calls a "hitchhiker thumb" lol!

  • woot, great voice also :D

  • this is good but her left wrist annoys me

  • I was just thinking the same thing about her wrist!

  • @clammyywhammyy ..... Thanks for pointing the wrist out!! Now it annoys me as well!!! ha ha

  • wtf is up with the guy at 3:18 walking right in front of the video of the performance???? I get the impression that these folks could careless about the performance they are hearing. what a shame! I guess they are the folks who would rather hear Britney Spears screech on the radio

  • Your right, It is NO LONGER about talent, Todays Music is about Stud Muffins and Chic skinny little ANOREXIC Girls screeching and Music?, a BUNCH of distortion fuzz tones delay, and anything else to cover their LACK of talent,Understand Patsy Cline,Hank Williams and such would NOT have a chance of making it Today, Didn't look good enough.....

  • @juicyfruitzy, I used to be in a choir and that's just what happens when you sing (and I'm assuming playing an instrument is the same, too) at some venues. They come, and you sing (or play) to make the atmosphere different. But I think if they didn't appreciate the music at all, brittany spears probably would be playing instead ;)

  • cool!!! she sings as well! she sure has come a long way since the video of her at age 7. She'd be more presentable if she was standing.... though maybe she has an excuse, a broken foot or something :P

  • Wow, what amazing talent. If I were hearing this at a bar, I'd be quiet to enjoy it.

  • I'm curious as to why this only has 4 and a half stars .. It should have the full 5!

  • SmoOOOkin' I love it. Awesome rifs, Bad ass Bass and A Beautiful Violin with a Voice to go with it! Great job by ALL. (except those who were talking during this beautiful piece not to mention the guy who hung in front of the camera those long 12 seconds. I would give anything to have been sitting QUIETLY in the audience. Shame. Thanks for posting.

  • Why is there noise in the background??? It should be quiet with such beautiful music being created!

  • Laura you are a very versitile young lady. I have to say I enjoy you very much and have sent you around the world with youtube even as a little girl. Wow amazing. Bravo!!!! 100%

Your friend and Fan Ron in Alberta.

  • @Rhawneld57 Thankss!

  • What a shame about the background noise, how on earth could those people be talking etc with such lovely music going on!! I'm a classical violin fan but rapidly being converted ;)

  • BLAH BLAH BLAH posture this techneique that, its all about sound which she has DOWN

  • Your voice and playing are beautiful!!!

  • i am laura watson

  • haha....we busked together a few times on the waterfront.....you were like 3 and a half feet tall, I think you were 6 or 7 years old at the time

  • Loli Laura was cuter.

  • very nice :D

  • If only the crowd would be silent ..

I love this . Such a nice "feel good" piece

  • Too late for a 14-year-old ?

Maybe to become a classical concertist , but to become an even better fiddler it surely is not.

Neither is too late for a classical player to take the stand off the front of him and start improvising the way this girl does...

    He won't be a Mark O'Connor , but why not ?

  • The posture is horrible!!

  • I know! As my violin teacher would say "She's squishing the little man!"

  • the wrist and the violin are down!

  • She sounds really good, but her technique and posture are horrible.

  • she has a nice voice but she has horrible techinique..im sure she could sound alot better if she'd learned good posture right from the beginning but its too late now =/

  • Thanks I will. =)

  • The reason why fiddlers have their violin held down their arm was b/c in the old days fiddlers had be able to call out changes during dances. The correct posture prevents this freedom. Also, most fiddlers back in the day were self taught and poor. Couldn't afford proper lessons and what feels "right" isn't always the correct way to play. Unless a fiddler is using his/her voice while playing there's no real reason for a fiddler to not have correct technique/posture.

  • I'm classically trained, but enjoy fiddling too and I find that the arm down works well in a bluegrass setting. Makes it easier to sing along, I dunno. Like you say it just feels "right"-- for that kind of music.

  • She's got in awesome voice and she plays really nicely too.I'm going to take violin lessons soon, can't wait. YAY!!!!!

  • violin takes hard work and commitment!

    (i didn't follow through with it when i was 8 years old ( ; )

    have fun with it!

  • Comment removed

  • Bravo! The guitar dude is awesome too!

  • She's got a pretty nice voice as well. Regardless of technique, I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. And in the end, isn't that what matters for a performer?

  • i actually thought it was proper position for a fiddler, not a violinist.

  • Those complaining about the audience - welcome to the world of workaday musicians! This is a pub, not a concert hall. She does hold the fiddle loosely (same sort of way I hold the rebec, which can't be clasped under the chin, because of its round back), but I'm not sure how common this is amongst "violin" fiddlers. I'm going to get a cheap violin soon to mostly play folk tunes, but I'm going to insist on holding it classical violin style, so that I don't limit my technique too much.

  • why is the audience laughing and talking the whole time? I thought she was great...

  • good musically, but she had tons more stage presence as a small kid...is it even the same person?

  • I just love this song!!! She is such a great singer and fiddler. But I agree with DanielR305.

  • great fiddling but its a shame the mic isnt turned slightly more to hear a great voice bit theses people in the audience they don't respecting her singing as much as we are doing. Which is there loss but I am really glad future generations will keep celtic music alive which is great to know you are great laura

  • I think she sounds great!!

But if i'm not mistaken, it's terribly unhealthy to hold her wrist that way. I thought that could cause a lot of hand stuff......?

  • yes, that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • oooh yeah!!

    Thanks ^^

  • that's true, but since she started young, that's how it formed.

  • my teacher calls it a pancake wrist :0

  • Absolutely. Her posture is terrible and her technique as far as holding the instrument is not good. She's going to have problems with her wrist when she's older.

  • I agree. Terrible posture + poor technique = pain playing in the future. She manages to get a decent sound in spite of her technique. She may have learned that way as a child, so it feels comfortable to her now, but just wait 10 years... She's got tons of talent, but I pity her for what will happen if she doesn't fix her technique.

  • Yeah, I agree. This happens to a lot of violinists, fiddlers & viola players. Especially for the young ones who began to play and instrument.

  • holding this violin below the chin or just ubove the chest is correct cos shes not just playing the violin, shes FIDDLING!!! and she rocks at it.

  • nice, but i just cant understand way that she play violin, she holds it too low,and she dont know to hold bow and her wrist is not flexible!but sound and intonation are not bad!

  • She has a very pleasant voice.

  • All those rude people talking and not appreciating the talent is infuriating!

  • she's really good except the way she plays her violin is really weird..

  • it's a fiddle

  • yet she plays that mofo like ya daddy wishes he did

  • ok she holds the violin really weird. like below her chin kinda and it drops down low.

i don't know about this girl

    eeeh

  • Laura you are truly amazing! Your singing is beautiful!! We'd all love to hear you do another CD with just you singing on it!!

  • u play really well

  • I want a 5-string so bad.

  • wow, can sing too. Great, where is your CD?

  • newveefy goofies.

  • needs more energy, but very good none the less, good job.

  • where is she from??

  • great!

  • HA HA. I think that's generalising a bit but 'luckyzoo5' had it coming. lol.

I like the vid. Nice violin playing. Technique is important and has it's place but you can't criticise it when the musical result is good. A classical technique wouldn't always benefit playing other styles.

This tune was originally written as a tango. Has anyone ever heard a tango rendition of it cos I haven't?

  • OH BTW great video! such poise and musicality for a 14 year old! dead nuts intonation! (of course she had that at 4 too!) ;o)

  • Thank you, it was a pleasure to shoot!

  • I disagre, when she was 7 the intonation was bad. She is definitely better now.

  • I disagre, when she was 7 the intonation was bad. She is definitely better now.

  • I disagre, when she was 7 the intonation was bad. She is definitely better now.

  • I disagre, when she was 7 the intonation was bad. She is definitely better now.

  • orchestra players! phaa! get over yourself! The best musicians in the world often have "unorthodox" technique. Are you going to say some 7th chair, 2nd-violin flunky who can't play anything unless it's printed on staff paper is better than this gal just because her "teacher" didn't get all anal about her "pancake hands"? I've been a professional musician since i was 17 played in orchestras and was married to a classical cellist so I know what I'm talking about.

  • omg the posture is so awful

    look at her left hand!

pancake hand as we call it in our orchestra..

gosh whoever is giving her lessons tell her to learn how to hold a violin

  • She could play better than many people who've played their whole lives when she was just seven, I think she can handle an "off posture" and yes I play fiddle too.

  • Wow,I just watched you when you were 7 & now I find out you're 14,growing up fast.Ignore the people who write negative stuff, they're just trying to get a reaction.Bitchface66 must be very proud,(i'm guessing she's your mom). You're an inspiration to us all, well done for sticking at it all these years.I hope you carry on. Ry - England

  • Ha,I just realized my mistake.Sorry,Bitchface66 is your older sister (I think).Anyway,I'm sure all your family are proud of you.Well done again!

  • This has been one of my favorite songs for over 30 years, since I heard John Coltrane play it. I like this rendition. I think the kid did a good job on both vocals and fiddle. The bassist and guitarists aren't bad, either.

  • I think you are amazing.. I know nothing about this music or instrument.. but what I hear is great.. keep it up!! and you have a great voice! nice!

  • Shut Up!!!

  • wow you really are a coniving asshole and cant even give a person a compliment you have to analyze everything. let her play how she is cuz she is good and has a beatiful voice. also what the fuck is with the american monotonous country music comment i mean what the fuck?!?

  • Thanks you gothickitten. It's not even country music. What an idiot. What does "America" have to do with it? He's really just grasping at straws looking for something to bitch about. Anyways, she's not playing classical music, there's no need for her to have her arm straight out. She's played celtic for a long time, and sometimes it's easier to play that style all the time if your arm is in farther.

  • quincy: other violin/fiddle videos (scottish borders, celtic, irish), all have left elbow against their side. 'celtic fiddle' is nearly straight down! 'scotch fiddle' video, the fiddle is way up, arm nearly stretched out! on classical type music, itzhak perlman has elbow against his side, violin tending down. jemima clarke playing 'schindler's list' also, holds her violin straight & level, sounds equal to perlman! this tune is not country, written by hammerstein, it's 'soft jazz'

  • this is hardly country music you insufferable snob. I've never heard a "classical" violinist who could play jazz, celtic, samba, old time, border or Cape Breton... (or anything that wasn't sitting on a music stand) worth a crap. And I've played it 4 orchestras in my 30 years as a professional musician.

  • Laura Laura Laura !! You're as awesome as always ! So happy to hear you're singing! (you always had that something special) Hope we can perform together again soon. We miss you !

    U're other Mom lol

  • Ahhhh haha That's my little sister!!! This is why I don't like playing with you Laura.... You make me look like I know nothing. But that's about the only reason. I miss it alot.

  • it sounds like she was singing zamba

  • Laura, you play and sing beeeeeyoooootifully ! I hope you go far with this career sweety !

  • Wow i love it! Laura, you did a really good job. The guitar solo was amazing too!

  • And that was...Less then 5 hours ago at stayners warf in Halifax, Thankx alot Kelly for comming down and filming this! looks great!

  • No problem!

I am working on the other songs now...

    Cheers!
