I've always wondered whether the word "jij-a-boo" in this song is just a more palatable version of a racist word with a hard "g" in the middle? Thoughts?
@cornbruiser All songs from the early 1900's have additional lyrics that were omitted in later versions as records became faster-paced and shorter. In the original lyrics, Jim O'Shea becomes a castaway on an island where the natives like him and decide to make him "chief Panjandrum". They call him "Jijjiboo Jhai" (spelling from the sheet music) based on his real name and he writes to his girlfriend on shore asking her to join him there and become "Mistress Munbo Jumbo Jijjiboo J. O'Shea".
I am so excited to find this here. I have the LP "Naughty, Naughty, Naughty" but it's so scratchy sounding now- from years of me playing it over and over, it's wonderful hearing it clearly again! Thank you so much for sharing this!
