Great stuff. It's good to hear you in an interview as It truly represents your sensibilities and attitudes well. Watching a person in a video they have posted gives a one sided representation of how someone is. I loved the part when you asked if you had received any negative responses. Funny and honest. More interviews please.
@strangetranceoffaith Lol, I actually found Phill thanks to the interview. I'm about to watch the interview again, now that I know more about him. Might be interesting.
hey phil, is ther any chance you can do a video about the myths of Quranic Miracles about Embryology and settle this shit, I m sick witting all the time ... it would be great if I could just past the link of your video, I know i m being lazy
Well done. I'll post this and then have another listen just to be sure I didn't miss anything. Next, it's the lecture circuit for you...similar to what Aronra does. And I agree with the others here, that you are probably quite capable of authoring a good book.
So many youtube atheists present themselves as smooth motherfuckers, and then shoke when it's live. You've been sent to save the reputation, my friend, you're as smooth as your videos.
Just listened to the podcast, for a first interview I thought you were most excellent. I have listened to over 2000 audio books, if you wrote a book I would listen to it. I do not consider you my hero or an idol but one of the boys that you looked at in assembly. I am glad you brought up the desert analogy as I think many atheists forget that for what ever reason some people would simple fail without a god to believe in.
Great interview style. I thought you were left hanging after some of your responses but I presume that is the problem with non face to face interviews. You didn't stutter, to me you sounded thoughtful and considered. Bloody good effort. Don't beat yourself up (I'm sure there are plenty of fundies who'd do that for nowt!)
Just listened to the interview. While I'm sure it's easy being self-critical afterwards, it's actually not bad. Very interesting to hear you away from your "safe zone" if I may call it that. Keep up the good work!
In the interview there is a reference to a piece of music (about 37 minutes into it), but I'm not able to make out the exact words. Can someone help me?
i recently managed to stay on my ass during the pledge to the flag... i feel a tad rebellious still.. though there are others who sit but they are just lazy... -_-
and i really think you're a hero phil, you're fantastic.
I gotta say, the main guy on the show seemed very dry. I'm used to The Non-Prophets, The Adam Carolla Podcast and other shows that sound like actual conversations, like you think "Hey, that's how my friends sound when we go for a bite to eat". Not to stroke your ego too much, but you were the only reason to keep listening.
I enjoyed listening to it. I think interviews like this provide a good meta-channel analysis that we don't usually provide on the channel itself. A meta-conversation where we talk *about* the channel itself, our goals for it, and how we feel it is working.
Good Interview, when you were talking about the time that all the other kids bowed their head and we stood there keeping our heads high and that feeling we had. I wonder now how many kids hold their heads high. I was in public school only 8 years ago and I can remember only 10 or so would hold their heads high I wonder if its changed..
You liar - that was an interesting, professionally conducted interview.
Also as much as I would like like to think that Shlock is a troll (for peace of mind about the possible limit to the dishonesty and stupidity of humanity), he's just got that wild eyed look to him. I do have a kind of morbid curiosity about his type - those who are dishonest in a very calculated way and yet believe themselves to be honest - but I do believe that's just who he is. If not, he's a great actor.
Just listened to some of it. That shock of god part... I wouldn't be SHOCKED if he did that. Any dickless asshole who has no intelligence might do something like that.
Excellent interview, you spoke very eloquently, and with passion! I can completely relate to looking up when all the heads are bowed. Thanks for your thoughts!
I think you did a brilliant job. One bit of advice; WRITE A BOOK! I've read dozens and dozens of books by the likes of Hawkings, Penrose, Rosenblum, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Adams,Dennett. etc. After watching all of your videos (I think all of your videos) I can safely say you move/inspire me as much, if not more, than they do. I for one would buy it.
You look like you should be included in the inside leaflet fold-out of Metallica's "And Justice For All" album. You know, before they became commercial tools right after the "black" album, or perhaps, in the first Tenacious D album foldout. This has no basis in, or reference to anything you are saying, just a commentary on the visual nature of it.
Love your viddyuhs, btw, and yes, you should do more of them, you cheeky monkey. :)
There is nothing wrong with being a hero, hell, after watching damn near all of your videos, I now think in YOUR accent.....ha! Enjoyed the interview.........
I hope this isn't a false alarm, but the interview seems to be unavailiable for me. Both direct listening and the "Download" button lead to a 404. Anyone sharing this? I'd really like to hear it...
PHIL! It's amazing how you refered to atheist realisation moments as Thus Spake Zarathustra moments, because "The Spake Zarathustra" is a book written by Nietzhsce which is pretty much about an atheist jesus trying to make people think for themselves. So that song is pretty much about atheism!
I really enjoyed the interview. I suspected that the term philhellenes was Greek related, and as a student of Greek history I found it to be an admirable title. I just read Thucydides' "History of the Peloponnesian War" which was written 2400 years ago. If the bible were written the same manner it would have been a different book entirely. I would highly recommend the book. The Greeks truly opened the Western mind.
Good interview, you're too modest. I listened to the whole hour and didn't get sick once. ;-) Are you going put the highlights on a video on your channel?
If Philhellenes came across as anything other than interesting, intelligent and well spoken, please blame it on my poor editing skills. When I do an 'interview' episode, I try to keep my mouth shut and let the guest speak and I try to cut as little as possible, hence more delay in speaking than you will hear on other shows. My goal is to chat with the guest and let the listener feel like they are part of the conversation. Phil was a great guest and I really enjoyed talking with him.
@Frostcall - Thanks so much for interviewing Phil. I have been a big fan of his for almost two years now and that was the most I've heard him open up about his atheism. Very interesting. Well done!
Like anything, the more you do the more practiced at it you get. Here's hoping the subs give you more lattitude to try out new things than they afforded Thunderf00t.
From this video I would assume you would have bombed the interview but you actually did a REALLY kick-ass job. Hopefully you'll do more in the future.
Yeah, sometimes you pause a lot, and some sentences gets lengthy.
But... what you are speaking about is some complicated psychological stuff. No one expects you to be able to just fire such stuff off like a machine gun. If you did, if would sound rehearsed. As if you had settled on "a truth". I like the idea of you constantly reviewing your own arguments from scratch, rethinking your position!
Great pod cast. I loved how the hosts let you speak, no interruptions.
You have nothing to worry about - you were interesting and interested in your interviewer's questions. Frostcall will happily invite you back, because your interview was great
Phil, your teenage experience of shaking a belief in religion but not being able, for a long time, to shake a belief in some unspecified providence or presence that has access to your thoughts and arranges events in your life mirrors EXACTLY my own.
I don't think it was Muhammad who saw the weaknesses in the bible and removed them, he just copied stuff from others such as the gnostics where the claims made more sense.
Muhammad's successes were:
1: Telling people that all the religious stuff they already do is REALLY Islam, but has been hijacked.
2: Repeated threats of hell.
3: Instructing people to be OCD in their lives, and not even think about which foot to first step in/out of the bathroom with.
I too used to be the kid who looked around the room in school assembly instead of praying too, now I think back to it I remember a wonderful feeling as if I had been released from prison and was looking at those less fortunate still locked away.
Religious assemblies still fucked me up though in far more many ways than I ever realised - along with those Jesus/Moses films we always get at Easter.
@TheRationalizer Well, the Prince of Egypt isn't a bad animated film by its own merits at least. And Ten Commandments is pretty up there in Star power.
As you undoubtedly know interviews are about the interviewee, not the interviewer. You're there to talk expansively, if you don't it's a bad interview. If you really want to piss an interviewer off just answer "yes" or "no" and then sit there and look at them. Typical British passive egotism! Sort of like passive/aggressive but all done with mirrors ;-)
An intensely enjoyable hour, listening to your interview. Enjoyable to hear your own thoughts, or similar, said by another: 1/ Having the express goal to convert believers (there are many videos of yours that are example of that). I get personal messages from young theists, asking questions about facts, counteracting theologians' assertions. 2/ Being ready to admit you are wrong (I remember your conversation with PaulsEgo). 3/ Talking sense, relying on science...
24th of October 2009. I remember the day clearly when I realised there was nobody reading my mind. I was grinning more than I have ever seen someone religiously deluded grin.
It's a fantastic feeling to realise you aren't infinitely worthless compared with an infinitely perfect entity, but are in fact just completely fucking average.
Good interview Phil; but I am so insulted, at or about the 21st minute, you imply that an atheist would be perfectly capable of doing that one thing SoG did. Although anyone would be capable, I would suspect a x-tian before an atheist. Either I've misunderstood your intended meaning or you have misjudged the atheist mind. Still enjoying the interview, is definitely worthwhile.
@BlowDevilUp I winced at that point when I heard it back, because I know how it sounded. It was not what I meant. A better way of putting what I WAS trying to get at (based on how I felt when I believed) is that I don't think that anyone who TRULY believed a (good) god was watching them COULD behave like that. Maybe a "part time" Christian could, or one that "forgot" what he or she was supposed to believe, how they are supposed to behave to other humans. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
The interview sounded really good, don't be so damned critical!
You've done better than maybe 95% of the other people I've ever heard being interviewed. I'm sure that when you think you're stuttering, the rest of us just see you thinking (I did). That kind of thing happens a hell of a lot when people are asked unscripted questions. ;)
Great stuff. It's good to hear you in an interview as It truly represents your sensibilities and attitudes well. Watching a person in a video they have posted gives a one sided representation of how someone is. I loved the part when you asked if you had received any negative responses. Funny and honest.
You were so damn articulate!

Skin to 5 mins 30 seconds to watch the start!

I think you did good on that interview but I didn't like the show. 5 mins of baby bla bla and the hosts were very ... boring. :p

@philhellenes I can't seem to find your ''al taqiyya'' videos. Where they removed?

Your self appraisal shows you have good instincts, Phil. You could, honestly, have been a touch more focused.
However, I find it almost always truly marvelous to hear your thoughts and I really, really enjoyed it.
Talk more. :)

The interview sounded really good, don't be so damned critical!
You've done better than maybe 95% of the other people I've ever heard being interviewed. I'm sure that when you think you're stuttering, the rest of us just see you thinking (I did). That kind of thing happens a hell of a lot when people are asked unscripted questions. ;)

So, don't go off on a tangent in the middle of a digression from an ambiguous piece of esoterica?

Phil, you remind me of that kid at school who comes out of every exam thinking he's failed even though he constantly trots out A grade material

@philhellenes
Was "that" kid possibly yourself ?
And would "that" kid realize he was one of "those" kind of kids, while he was still a kid ?
Hmm .. he would probably be insecure enough to become religious, but too smart to believe their nonsense. Sounds familiar ? :)
