One was the REGIONAL and the second was the Acela EXPRESS. The first one stops in Prov to let the second one by. They leave south station within 15 minutes of each other.
Yea its called blocking. And two trains can occupy the same track as long as there sufficient space between each train. In Europe on the Eurostar, between Paris and the Chunnel, there's like a train every 2 to 5 minutes on that track during peak travel periods.
Either the last acela missed a signal and kept goin or since there so fast they send them behind each other but the first train goes onto another track ?
@csx2566 the first one was a regional with a HHP-8 but i think maybe there was an interlocking section close to the station because that just looked like breaking several important rules
not to mention there is a 25 mile an hour speed difference between the equipment
I have no clue why the warning went off on track 1, but I do know that they can be right behind each other. This must have been 176 and 2168. They were 5 mins apart of each other last night out of Providence
I think it was about 7:00 to almost 8:00pm when they came by? But i know one thing both trains were going at least 100mph on the inbound track so they were catching up to each other pretty quick.
That does sound like the best explanation. That would explain the signals on the outbound track being red too. Either there was an Amtrak or MBTA on the outbound track somewhere or the outbound track was simply out of service.
I just pulled out my NEC timetable from 2003, and the Canton Jct. Interlocking is just up ahead...one of them may have crossed over so the Acela could overtake

Sharon Station is 135 mph for acelas,125 mph for regionals and 79-80 mph for MBTA trains. Cool catch!

This isn't possible, the whole NEC is positive train control. Blow a red and get shutdown!
