@blackhalk555 You can lock in 3 locations. You would have to actually visit each one first - you can't input an arbitrary latitude and longitude. But, if your idea is to hide items, you could do that, locking in each location, and then making a game of it...
You still need a compass and the skills. Use your compass for navigation, when you start recognizing the area near where you camped or parked then use your backtrack. When leaving your car/camp turn around and take a mental picture of of the area. Note landmarks. Then proceed on your trip. GPS is only good if and when there are satelites in the area and if weather or terrain permits.
@swarmotics Thanks Bro, Your video is informative. And it is a good tool. But for those who had problems with it. Nothing is 100%. Batteries can die, It can get dropped, lost, or break. GPS needs satellites in the area, and the weather or terrain can make it have a slow or non existent signal. You still need compass skills.
Wow - I'm very sorry to hear that! Everyone must be careful with such technology - you just never know when it will fail. I'm very far from big cities and it works fine for me - but I've never tried it in places where trees are huge. GPS should work fine regardless of proximity to a city (it is coming from satellites, not cell towers), but perhaps a dense tree canopy would be a problem. What happened? Did it fail to connect to the satellites, or give a bad reading?
Yeah - sorry - my cheapie Canon camera has trouble in video at small distances. Does anyone know if there is a setting on the camera to help that? it is the SD1100...
There is Macro, but it's not for video. Main reason for responding is to say you can get a small program called CHDK and you can use it to make your video cleaner, but they will take up more memory. Google CHDK. I checked and the SD1100 will work with the program. I personally use it on my SD400. Program is FREE, so I am not trying to sell anything here, just hoping to help if possible. Will work on a variety of camera's, making it that much more useful folks.
exellent review thanks ...question if the battery goes dead will it retain the memory? when you replace battery? i heard stories that a gps must be calibrated regularly to retain true accuricy?
I popped out the batteries and put them in a few minutes later and no problems, so the memory does appear to be non-volatile. However I haven't tested taking the batteries out for long periods.
Yes, I did replace the batteries and no problems - the locations were still stored. As for calibration - the unit either doesn't do it, or does it by itself. It doesn't appear to be an issue for the user, however.
Thank you! I didn't like a lot of the other videos either - I really wanted to show a fun field test. I did it 3 out of 3 times, and my wife did this successfully on her first attempt also (finding the bag in the field).
could you lock multiple locations?
for instance if i wanted to make a game out of it, and plug multiple GPS codes in it would that work?

@johnboy860 You are precisely right - and good advice for everyone...
The more your reliance on gadgets, the riskier.

I've used it in a forest area and no problems... I wonder why yours didn't work.

@Y4vin: The user interface doesn't allow this. But I suspect a good ECE student could find a way to do it by pulling it apart.

You were geocaching.

@denelson83
True, other than the fact that you can't input lat/long numbers, however... so the unit has to have been there previously.

Fascinating! I'm looking at this now. Wow - this is amazing - I didn't know one could do this. Although I really should have realized it!

@swarmotics
Ya, it really can help a boat load with vids. I run my SD400 around 1500 k/bs, about as good as that old camera can do

@swarmotics Did you ever see what happens when it goes dead will it save the memory.

Great review! This is just what I was looking for. Most others were just show and tell... without real demonstrations. Thanks!

Sorry - I was a prof for 7 years - rather err on the side of verbosity and give people a feel for time (i.e., the unit does require some patience).
