When you write in the Notebook, you are sent to neither Heaven nor Hell. In other words, Purgatory. The Void. The Nothingness. If Light were to come back, then it is possible that his reincarnation could be in the form of a Shinigami. But would he really ask Ryuk what happened? Wouldn't he come back with a basket of Human World apples and tell him that he's back? It is possible that he came back. But for it to be this new Shinigami that appears is very unlikely.

People who think that light didn't go to heaven or hell because he used the death note are wrong. In the manga, light figured that the reason the death note said that was because there was no heaven or hell and ryuk confirmed that. Therefore, light could be that shinigami.
@TheDewey101 True, in the manga, Ryuk clearly states that there is no heaven or hell, but I'm guessing since the people who were working on the movie and anime didn't want offend anyone who was religious and decided to leave that part making people think that is just part of the Death Note's rules.

Well at the end of the manga it goes back at what Ryuk said to light about a person using a death note not going to heaven or hell. Then it finally tells you what light said in response to that. He said oh I already know that. That's because there is no heaven or hell right Ryuk. He says yep that when all humans die they go to nothingness so yeah. Sry for the long comment:)

Don't you remember what Ryuk said? "Those who use the Death Note can go to neither Heaven nor Hell." I believe this is indeed Light as a Shinigami as it makes perfect sense. I mean something has to happen to their soul when they die, and this makes sense. Refer to the line, "we don't know where we came from" said by Ryuk. This unnamed Shinigami can't remember his life prior to being a Shinigami. I believe that is what Ryuk meant by that line.
But isn't that Shinigami Zellogi? I have the Death Note How to Read 13 and under File 10 in the Complete Shinigami File (page 50) it has him (he may be another Shinigami, though) and it says nothing about Light being reincarnated
This is quite interesting, however, the series ended with light dying because the creator wanted to close the series after L died. As it turns out, L was his and the artist's favorite character, and therefor, wanted the series to end with Light dying the way he did. Now, about the shinigami thing, it COULD happen, but perhaps not. We wont know for sure unless we were to gather the official word. Or maybe the creator simply WANTED us to keep guessing...quite likely, yes? You decide! :3

The coat he wears looks very similar to the one Light was wearing when he died, he tosses an apple to Ryuk similar to Light did, and the Shinigami sports a messenger bag almost identical to the one Light carried in school.

For some, it might be XD He's worthy in terms of how many people he's killed, which would give him status amongst the gods of death. And it's a theory. Because Light had qualities that would make him a worthy shinigami, he could bypass nothingness and become one of them, especially since 2 shinigami have turned to dust in the DN timeline. In a sense, he could replace one of them.

I knew vaguely about what the ending was from spoilers, but it still shocked me. It's wasn't AS good as I expected, but I was expecting a lot, really. Shame on me. Loads of people hated it, but I loved that Near was the one who proved him Kira and that Matsuda, though illegally, shot him. This whole Light is a Shinigami thing is really interesting.
This reaffirms what Ryuk said about humans who've used the Note being banished from heaven and hell. Although Ryuk said he'd be the one to write Light's name in the Death Note, that's not to say it would kill him, he could have crossed it out, the rules state if crossed out, the person lives. Also, Ryuk said he'd write Light's name in it WHEN he died, whereas really, Ryuk wrote his name in it and AS A RESULT he died. Maybe he was dying of blood loss from when Matsuda shot him.
@dckvey Is that right? Hmmm, I think maybe it is. I wasn't sure, maybe I was thinking if one spells the name wrong thrice, the effect is nullified. I better man would Google it, but I'll just take your word for it. That's not the worst of rules, really. Death is inevitable; unless there's a limit to how far ahead the Note lets one plan a death, I think there might be. Again, I won't look it up. The rules confuse me no end, Light almost memorises them, it's astounding, really. For me, anyway.
@dckvey Also, I think another note can cancel out the effect of the Note which is used to plan the death. But again, not sure. Perhaps you can confirm that....or not, accordingly.
Personally I do believe that Shimigami is Light, far to many similarities (check Death Note Wiki for a list) but as far as a 3rd season goes, absolutley no way. The creators ended it very well, and with Light as the Shimigami is more of an ironic jab at his character than a potential spin off plot change

Yes that coule be him. I often thought that maybe shinigami are the reincarnations of those who have used the Death Note. Because if you read Death Note #13 the creator said " We are not sure how shinigami come into existense." and in a previous volume the rules for the notebook said "shingami cannot reproduce or have sex." So, it's a definet possibility that people who use Death Note become shinigami after they die. Just without their memories from when they were alive

@Brevincampbell12 True. It is highly likely it is Light, but I think the creators deliberately left it open so that everybody could make their own decisions on it I suppose. They did that with a lot of things in the series, like whether L has Asperger's Syndrome or not.
@KiWiCrappy well, they might have some memories, because...look at my other comment. oh and the manga "kira wins" ending puts Kira on a quest to find the shinigami king and trick him into getting eternal life (which may explain him being a shinigami) all the while, he experiences all of the deaths he has ever caused. L fans might like it.
@X5Exotic l gotta say, if you read the manga, ryuk will say that death is infact equal to everyone, noone will go to heaven nor hell, they will all go to the nothingness. This is also a rule in the notebook.
I never said Light wasn't human. The whole "not going to heaven or hell" applies to humans that have used the Death Note. The reasoning for that might be that if a human uses a Death Note, then they are essentially "recruited" as a new Shinigami since God would have more than likely rejected that human's passage into heaven. Not sure about Satan.

Didn't this Shinijami show up in the anime before this all happened? There's a scene in the Shinijami world where a few of them are together and that one appears. The one with goggles on his head and Light was still VERY much alive at that point I believe because if memory serves correctly its before Ryuk leaves to the human world. But I could be mistaken it's been a long time since I watched Death Note, so I apologize :)

@10xana He still had his memories because in the catual oneshot of the anime ending (saw it on youtube) He goes to ryuk to hear the Kira story, then leaves before the story ends (presumably for the human world to start a new "Kira cycle") he also gives Ryuk a shinigami apple without asking if he wanted it (he already knew he likes apples) and he is most likely Light because of all the refrences (his outfit, he walks up stairs to find ryuk, his eyes, his hair, and his smile) but the manga version

I kinda wrote about Raito was chosen by the King of Death and became the soon-to-be shinigami. He has to work hard in killing with his own Death Note and given body under Ryuk's watch until the King decided he's worthy of being a shinigami, in the mean time, he plays with Ryuuzaki's mind, who isn't dead yet cuz Rem failed killing him (and lol he had a temporary dead cuz the sugar in his blood kicked in XD). Don't you remember what Ryuk said? "Those who use the Death Note can go to neither Heaven nor Hell." I believe this is indeed Light as a Shinigami as it makes perfect sense. I mean something has to happen to their soul when they die, and this makes sense. Refer to the line, "we don't know where we came from" said by Ryuk. This unnamed Shinigami can't remember his life prior to being a Shinigami. I believe that is what Ryuk meant by that line.

This is quite interesting, however, the series ended with light dying because the creator wanted to close the series after L died. As it turns out, L was his and the artist's favorite character, and therefor, wanted the series to end with Light dying the way he did. Now, about the shinigami thing, it COULD happen, but perhaps not. We wont know for sure unless we were to gather the official word. Or maybe the creator simply WANTED us to keep guessing...quite likely, yes? You decide! :3

What if the Unnamed Shinigami is a reincarnation of Light? I mean look at the Shinigami. The coat he wears looks very similar to the one Light was wearing when he died, he tosses an apple to Ryuk similar to Light did, and the Shinigami sports a messenger bag almost identical to the one Light carried in school.

Plus, we only know of 11 shinigami and like two of them are dead so that would leave 9 shinigami that are alive that we know. This is also counting this unamed shinigami.

For some, it might be XD He's worthy in terms of how many people he's killed, which would give him status amongst the gods of death. And it's a theory. Because Light had qualities that would make him a worthy shinigami, he could bypass nothingness and become one of them, especially since 2 shinigami have turned to dust in the DN timeline. In a sense, he could replace one of them.

I knew vaguely about what the ending was from spoilers, but it still shocked me. It's wasn't AS good as I expected, but I was expecting a lot, really. Shame on me. Loads of people hated it, but I loved that Near was the one who proved him Kira and that Matsuda, though illegally, shot him. This whole Light is a Shinigami thing is really interesting.

This reaffirms what Ryuk said about humans who've used the Note being banished from heaven and hell. Although Ryuk said he'd be the one to write Light's name in the Death Note, that's not to say it would kill him, he could have crossed it out, the rules state if crossed out, the person lives. Also, Ryuk said he'd write Light's name in it WHEN he died, whereas really, Ryuk wrote his name in it and AS A RESULT he died. Maybe he was dying of blood loss from when Matsuda shot him.

I better man would Google it, but I'll just take your word for it. That's not the worst of rules, really. Death is inevitable; unless there's a limit to how far ahead the Note lets one plan a death, I think there might be. Again, I won't look it up. The rules confuse me no end, Light almost memorises them, it's astounding, really. For me, anyway.

Personally I do believe that Shimigami is Light, far to many similarities (check Death Note Wiki for a list) but as far as a 3rd season goes, absolutley no way. The creators ended it very well, and with Light as the Shimigami is more of an ironic jab at his character than a potential spin off plot change

Yes that coule be him. I often thought that maybe shinigami are the reincarnations of those who have used the Death Note. Because if you read Death Note #13 the creator said " We are not sure how shinigami come into existense." and in a previous volume the rules for the notebook said "shingami cannot reproduce or have sex." So, it's a definet possibility that people who use Death Note become shinigami after they die. Just without their memories from when they were alive

I never said Light wasn't human. The whole "not going to heaven or hell" applies to humans that have used the Death Note. The reasoning for that might be that if a human uses a Death Note, then they are essentially "recruited" as a new Shinigami since God would have more than likely rejected that human's passage into heaven. Not sure about Satan.

Didn't this Shinijami show up in the anime before this all happened? There's a scene in the Shinijami world where a few of them are together and that one appears. The one with goggles on his head and Light was still VERY much alive at that point I believe because if memory serves correctly its before Ryuk leaves to the human world. But I could be mistaken it's been a long time since I watched Death Note, so I apologize :)

Okay, here is what I think.
Ryuk says that any human who has used the death note can never go to heaven or to hell.
But the Shinigami Realm is not heaven or hell.
Supposing that Shinigami cant reproduce and the fact that Shinigami can live on forever, then people who have used the Death Note, when they die they will go to the world BETWEEN heaven and hell... the Shinigami Realm. therefore Light may be a Shinigami now after all!!! (But there's no way of telling if he lost his memories...)

@10xana He still had his memories because in the catual oneshot of the anime ending (saw it on youtube) He goes to ryuk to hear the Kira story, then leaves before the story ends (presumably for the human world to start a new "Kira cycle") he also gives Ryuk a shinigami apple without asking if he wanted it (he already knew he likes apples) and he is most likely Light because of all the refrences (his outfit, he walks up stairs to find ryuk, his eyes, his hair, and his smile) but the manga version

I though Raito came back to life was my idea on my newest fanfic fist O_O
I kinda wrote about Raito was chosen by the King of Death and became the soon-to-be shinigami. He has to work hard in killing with his own Death Note and given body under Ryuk's watch until the King decided he's worthy of being a shinigami, in the mean time, he plays with Ryuuzaki's mind, who isn't dead yet cuz Rem failed killing him (and lol he had a temporary dead cuz the sugar in his blood kicked in XD). Pretty cool ha?

The one in the cemetery is a dead gorilla ~ Only Matsuda knows the truth, but he doesn't have much screentime so we didn't know~ ^^ Ryuuzaki woke up 3 hours after his "death" and moved in Matsuda's house! After Raito start his training Ryuuzaki contacted FBI and work as "L's secret agen" (Near's dead). LOL that's kinda fucked up! XD
