From Finland and OK with the result of the latest world war: HJ was definitely the premier German unit at Normandy. No use of accusing about war crimes because all units in all sides are quilty after all.

The 12th SS was manned largely (unsurprisingly) by fanatical former Hitler Youth. The Allies who encountered them were taken aback by how fanatically the little monsters fought. All SS units always received materiel in preference to other units, and in greater quantity. All units later in the war (on all sides) rushed training, so newer troops were greener, but no more so than any others; and everyone always included experienced cadres. 12th SS was one of the tougher units.

I think this panzer unit (Hitler Youth) was pretty much slaughtered during the Normandy campaign. Tough break for them. Wrong side of history.

Yeah they suffered heavy casulties because they fought so fanatically against the allied advance (On Caen i think?). Anyways, they managed to hold back a MUCH larger force for quite some time, that had to cost though.

That is a Jagpanzer IV/70, and that photo is not of the 12thSS. It is of 1SS-Panzerjager Abteilung, conducting actions along Recht-Poteau road, and that was during the Ardennes Offensive (not Normandy). Let it be noted, that the 12thSS offered token resistance at best and were poorly equipped and trained. They are known for their atrocities, than victories (or lack off them). They were known as the "Baby Division", and they were severely crushed by Canadian and British artillery at Caen.

Secondly, it has always been my impression that the division fought heroicly against the overwhelming numbers of the allies, also considering they were mere boys.

The 12th SS Panzer was an outstanding division in Normandy that out performed a lot of other german units full of grown men.

They were out numbered and out gunned by the allies yet were able to hold onto Caen for 5 weeks it was supposed to be captured on the first day.

They are not known for token resistance they are known for fanatical resistance and they caused the allies in normandy more trouble than any other german division.
