whoa dude. don't hurt anyone. I feel like that headline is just over the horizon that says some poor kid got mangled by some clown's giant octocopter.
Im well known in my area for landing my RCs in trees. I'm 63 yrs. old and can still climb but have had a few hairy moments that help me remember I can't bounce back up off the ground so well anymore. Now I use a 1 ounce fishing weight on fishing line that's coiled on a spool. IN my town I'd get jailed for calling the fire dept. I still climb but only if it doesn't look too risky.
At 2;03 what's the name of that song? I hear that song at school during the news thing we do on the t.v in my class-rooms. (I got to Terra Vista Middle School)
hello videoguy i am living in new calédonia and would like to know if you guys know any think about it, the octo copter of droidworks i think there is a shop in NZ and i wil come soon to buy one havy lift AD8 360, but i dont know for my work how many minutes it can fly with my canon 5D mark and what altitude ect...could you guys help me about it please ?
@TheTahiti14 I know the Droidworx owners very well. The Octo is a great machine for sure. Regarding flight times, this all depends on the total all up weight and how many batteries you use. You should expect somewhere around 5 to 10 minutes flying time. Re altitude, again it depends on many factors but heights of 400mtrs are easily attainable. I'm selling my Droidworx ADX3 HL. Go to vimeo dot com and search "Christchurch Aerial Shots. Take Two". It now has a DJI Wookong installed.
The more props you have, on a general consideration, the less efficient the whole thing will be. You are also adding points of failure.
In order to lift a beast such as the Canon you want to use, I recommend a Hexa with strong motors and large props. Call it AHM 40-6 motors on 12"x3.8" carbon props.
mine never acts like that if i dont calibrate. then again i dont have a hexacopter??? anyways glad you managed to get her home safe i wonder what it cost tax payers for the fireman event. :S
Hehe, you've got the best fire brigade! Ours would make pay a fine for calling them for a ''toy''. When my Spitfire landen 6-7m high in the tree I had to do quite some climbing and shaking my knees on a tree to get it back. Hip hip hura for New Zealand fire brigade! :)
@NZVideoGuy what the fire crew really came out for your camera ? and you didn't even have to set your kittchin on fire and kinda go ahh whilst u hear couldn't get my camera outa the tree ;-)
@SmOOvDoGG Don't worry, the NZFS isn't government funded with tax dollars. Its actually funded by insurance companies through a levy on building insurance.
@didiajoshua In NZ we still experience something many of you in Europe and the USA don't. It's called "freedom". If your little French pussy cat got stuck in a tree, wouldn't the French firemen come and rescue it? Let's face it. When there are no fires to fight, what's a fireman supposed to do?? Sit around and watch Coronation Street? ;-)
@b112938 I would never buy a Mikrokopter again. Basically they are highly overpriced cheap crap. Google DJI Naza, It's a great little Quadcopter that flys like a dream and is cheap to buy. I have two at the moment. Brilliant!!
You should offer virtual red zone tours. To the folks whining about using the fire service for this - if the guys are having a slow day, they won't mind getting some practice in - with the understanding that at any time they may need to bugger off to a real emergency.
@NonFerrousBueller Exactly!!! Someone dials 111 and they reply "Sorry you'll have to wait. We're rescuing a helicopter from a tree. Do you have a hose handy till we get there?". ;-)
A super entertaining video all around. The music is just fantastic, resolution is perfect..captions funny and all in all, I am green with envy! That home, the entire location is just beautiful..you must be one of the 1%!
Why else would the Fire Dept. come out to 'rescue' your crazy flying machine?
@ib422000 Firstly, thanks for your comments. Secondly, that's not a home. It's a large guesthouse. It suffered extensive damage in the earthquakes but has been repaired to its former glory.
That tree looks like an easy climb, far from impossible. Still if it was a slow fire week the fire company was probably glad for a diversion, something besides a cat in a tree..
I had a similar thing happen to me once. Had just built a plane, and was eager to try it out but forgot to check that my control surfaces were calibrated to the control sticks and ended up with inverted control input on my rudder. After swerving and looping all over I planted it about the same height up in a tree. I ended up spending 2 hours tossing sticks at the plane until it finally dropped out of the tree. Same lesson learned. Check your controls FIRST!
how much did it cost for them to bring their trucks to get your helicopter? and how much was it for your helicopter and everything that went into making the gopro attachable?
@SeverusKalkkaros and how much do you think they spent coming to aid you getting your drone from the branches?...and how much do you think peoples lifes are lol!
@NZVideoGuy bamboo is the answer if you want to use a pole in the future. I cut one live stalk measuring 11 meters to rescue my rc plane. Even if you use shorter lengths, they are easy to duct tape together since the ends can be split to go around another segment. It stays rigid and is very strong for it's weight. Just add a hook on the end so you can retrieve the craft in one piece.
This is great !!! I have been wanting to use a heli to take video with my GoPro and this is just what i have been searching for. Could you direct me to the site where you would suggest i purchase one of these in either kit form or almost ready to fly form. I did a search on the DJI site and it has options on parts etc and one to pre order, just wanted to make sure i order the correct unit. I am in Oz. Thank you for your experience and great videos.
@MrDrains22 Best bet, if you're a beginner, is to get a complete Naza kit from DJI. ( I think it's $460US) All you need to add is a radio and receiver, batteries and a charger and you're away. The kit is very easy to assemble and it will carry a GoPro no problem. If you crash and break something, parts are readily available and cheap. Don't make the mistake I did, of buying a MK RTF from a certain dealer in Aussie. You'll pay exorbitant prices and end up with cheap unreliable crap.
So, Let me get this straight. You were enjoying a vacation or something. Was Flying a RC Helicopter. And called in the Fire Department (Which could be saving lives) to raise a ladder to get it from a tree? -_______-
@smbproduction No, I wasn't on holiday. I live in ChCh. The guy on the trike was on holiday and he was keen to see the hexa flying. The Fire brigade was a very last resort, but let's not forget. They do rescue cats from trees all the time. They said this type of "rescue" all counts as practice, so they didn't consider it a waste of time.
nice job impressing the guys. I do not think they will ever consider a multicopter for whatever reasons you tried to demo. but again, thats a nice multicopter with a nice fast climb rate. you could use it to trim trees too :D
@alishanmao In fact they seriously considered getting a heli. Think of the practical uses in rescuing lives. The heli can very quickly maneuver to any side of a fire or rescue situation and can relay video back to the ground. Decisions can be made very quickly as to how best to tackle a fire/rescue. The only thing lacking in this situation, was my experience. But this event happened nearly a year ago. I'm way better now and have much better heli. See vimeo "Christchurch Aerial shots take two".
@NZVideoGuy followed those on vimeo. you have become way better of course as time went by. Keep up the good work. what is your current setup now. and how much does it cost
@NZVideoGuy We had this prob in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. Was the 'smoke' from a chemical fire (chemical storage depot) dangerous.... They had no way to collect air samples. Putting a real 'copter was not an option. In NZ, they used the Ipod toy 'copter to building check after the Christchurch earthquake. Poor resolution (on Youthube). ALL FIRE departments need this outfit.
@TheFilmResource Get a DJI Naza kit. ($460US) The DJI Flame Wheel airframe is almost indestructible and spare parts (motors, props, speed controllers etc) from DJI are cheap. All you need on top of the kit is a radio and receiver, and some 3 cell 2,200mAh LiPos. If you search YouTube there's some footage taken from the Naza with a GoPro.
@NachoLoKo It's a Mikrokopter Hexa XL. Basically an overpriced piece of crap. Have switched to Droidworx airframe and DJI Wookong flight controller with AXI motors. The camera is a GoPro HD.
whoa dude. don't hurt anyone. I feel like that headline is just over the horizon that says some poor kid got mangled by some clown's giant octocopter.

What RC plane or helicopter would you recommend for attaching a GoPro to? Preferably on the more affordable side, but still reliable.
TheFilmResource 2 months ago
@TheFilmResource Get a DJI Naza kit. ($460US) The DJI Flame Wheel airframe is almost indestructible and spare parts (motors, props, speed controllers etc) from DJI are cheap. All you need on top of the kit is a radio and receiver, and some 3 cell 2,200mAh LiPos. If you search YouTube there's some footage taken from the Naza with a GoPro.

NachoLoKo 2 months ago
@NachoLoKo It's a Mikrokopter Hexa XL. Basically an overpriced piece of crap. Have switched to Droidworx airframe and DJI Wookong flight controller with AXI motors. The camera is a GoPro HD.

@Luckzzz It was a lazy summer holiday. All the criminals were at the pub, having a day off. ;-)
