  • steve vai is amazing.. love his zappa work, solo... his DLR work was great too... yet even he couldnt replace John Sykes...

  • Vai started the solo then the note feed back ...he like it....love the solo...I am a guitar player myself and that was pretty ok

  • cant stop the feelin ive been this way before 1983! lol

  • Thank you for the video.the sound is ok, the video is ok, and the music is great, its one of my favorites, and the lyrics says...is this love?

  • Coverdale singed like 75 year old grandpa who has a diarrhea

  • Yeah I agree, via played a pretty crappy solo

  • /watch?v=xVK_UjQ3gHI <-- watch this new DVD version of this show. they fixed coverdale's voice really well.

  • Finally is coming to official dvd!!

  • I love the way Steve Vai imitates DC's yeah yeah at the beginning of his solo with the whammy bar...it just shows how brilliant an artist he is!

  • Love whitesnake, love vai, but the solo is a piece of crap, seen better, what can i say, John Sykes did one of the best works ever in that matter, in studio but anyway, piece of art!!

  • wowwwwwwww!!! what a sustain!! i fucking love it

  • I don't get the negativity against the slip of the tongue album. To me it's the best Whitesnake album. Coverdale+Vai is gold! Aparently neither one of them agreed. :)

  • Steve's solo? I fuckin' love it! Genius piece of art with only one note.

  • I like Steve Vai and what he´s done with David Lee Roth and solo projects but I never liked his playing in Whitesnake. Late 80´s sound of Whitesnake is John Sykes and now Aldrich. But Whitesnake began as a hard rock band in late 70´s and made a many good hard rock epics with Moody, Marsden, Murray, Ian Paice and even John Lord. Whitesnake are one of the best hard rock band ever and Slip of The Tongue was their biggest dissapointment.

  • WOW that solo sucked. I like S.V. but you don't mess with perfection.

  • turd solo! original is much better

  • love it

  • Wtf, Vai fucked up one of the greatest solos in a ballad of all time!!! Blasphemy!!! =)

  • @pitbull73 no way!!!, his version is equally as good! I love the original AND this one!

  • @twiggyb67 good comment ;]

  • @pitbull73 lmao blasphemy!!

  • @pitbull73 omg dude chill out vai was not made for whitesnake he was made for solo stuff his own music and he,s made awesome music and still dous i can not say that from whitesnake the heave made there last zd back in the 90tis somwhere so chill out will ya

  • Anyone remember the "I've just had a word with the BBC...I've got to stop swearing, so....it might be an idea if you swear on my behalf....what do you want to say?!" intro to this song? Classic!!

  • LOVE the solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • let´s face it, whitesnake´s 1987 is kicking.

  • Aweful quality!

  • i love whitesnake!!!!!!!!!!!

  • musicasso

  • musicasso

  • STEVE VAIIIIIIIII !

  • Sucks camel nuts...

  • ahh such a great band and such a awful guitarist , steve vai in my opinion is the most overrated guitarist ever

  • @DominicJ0nes thats coz you know shit all listen to his other stuff hes a master of styles and technique and his feeling is great

  • @DominicJ0nes Vai awful and overrated.. You're kidding right??

  • @DominicJ0nes Who would you say tops him then (well apart from maybe Sach)?

  • @seancoppinger every guitarist from the 80's like SLASH , Joe PERRY , RITCHE SAMBORA

  • @DominicJ0nes Lads stop fuckin arguing over music! One of you isent the big fan of him and the other is, matter of opinion so just leave it god dammit!

  • @seancoppinger every guitarist from the 80's like SLASH , Joe PERRY , RITCHE SAMBORA and many others , no really he is overrated

  • i pissed myself a 1:51 HAHAHA

  • Vai's solo sounds like a mosquito in pain. : )

  • i want to skyke's solo version.. this solo is bad

  • wtf steve vai? that solo was bollocks ha

  • Stave Vai is awesome!

  • This is really bad.... vocals suck, band is shitty

  • @SpeedColonel

ur the biggest fk head in the whole world

this is the best band eva

sure, the perfomance isnt perfect but cmon

  • @SpeedColonel exactly! that's all they could do without SYKES.

  • cn steve vay me gusta la wea pero la kgo un poko en el solo o le ubieran dado mas tiempo

  • this sounds so much like Marillion!!

  • this david coverdale is a badass

  • Vai solo sucks

  • it was just the type of music he played before he got into his more technical style.. the purpose of a lead guitarist in a band with a singer is to support the song rather than melt faces.. the steve vai we know now had to start somewhere

  • Vai is a lot of things but the sexy john sykes vibrato he ain't.

  • @fretfirestarter nowadays its rare for a guitar player to have such a distinctive sound that you can tell who is playing even without seeing and although i really dont care about steve vais solo career i will admit that he has a unique sound. whitesnake has never had a bad guitar player

  • I've been this way before. .1983.. haha.. that is funny david

  • 1:49

    wtf

  • Whitesnake headlined at Donnington in 1983.

  • coverdale's smoking did him in on many occasions.. i mean, he sounds like someone's choking him every time he goes in a higher register..

  • WOULD SOMEONE KILL WHOEVER IS ON BACKUPS??? PLEEEEASE?? NOW!!??

I really admire DC. I mean, the guy can be so outta tune live sometimes, but thats not the point :). You can hear what a great singer he can be, the way his voice sounds. He pushes himself so hard and really tries to please an audience, and that is really cool.

  • I thought that the solo was brilliant!

It's not how many notes you play - it's how you play them.

  • @OpT1mU5PrYm3

still prefer the john sykes version

  • if only vandenberg hadnt injured his wrist...

  • @JoaoT805 Yes indeed.

  • John Sykes IS a God...Too bad he wasn't playing here.

Other than being a frigging killing guitarist, Sykes is a killer lead/backing vocalist.

Tommy Aldridge is awesome as usual, but this version of the band was a shadow of the Coverdale/Sykes/Murry/Powell (and Lord) version.

  • People must admit that DC is awful himself live. Out of most of the youtube videos out there, he finds it difficult acheiving those melodies recorded in the studio. But on the other hand he does please the crowd every night! Vai used whitesnake to his own end, he wasnt stupid! It made him one of the most famous guitarists in the world over night. Zappa - alcatrazz - David LR - Whitesnake - Solo career and countless film scores, need you say more,The solo was what it was - in context & paid for!

  • @DNA267WithoutHeat

i know this comment is old but.. ARE YOU JOKING ME???

go watch still of the night live at mtv awards, go watch crying in the rain live 1985, and listen do soldier of fortune in the same concert, watch all the live in the still of the nigh concert(i think 2004 or 2005)

  • @DNA267WithoutHeat have you ever go to a whitesnake concert? i saw them three years ago and let me tell you that david coverdale is still a great singer... i dont know what are you talking about

If DC is awful, how can you explain his album with Jimmy Page? Jimmy Page wouldn´t work with a bad singer...

PD: when you upload a video on youtube it looks and sounds worse than the original...

  • @DNA267WithoutHeat well i`m listening him here ( live at donnington), and he realy has a bad voice on this concert, but listen to the starker in tokyo..

    btw, vai craped the solo..

  • Yeah.... Not the best Vai's solo (to say the least...), but hey - everyone has their ups and downs. I still woud have loved to see him stay with Whitesnake and do at least another album together. He was at his peak back then (take Passion and Warfare), surely, had he stayed with Whitesnake, something big would have come out of it...

  • Give it up for the guitarists... the solos are smashing, Vai installs the emotion of the original tune, takes it to a higher level, and everyone is having fun with it.

I am continually amazed at the comments from the gallery of "major guitarists" here on youtube. and for you rock suckers out there

To all you wankers who wished they knew how to hoodly hoodly on their Esteban guitar,,,

have a few pebbles on me. Cheers.

  • I do like this solo very much, just not as much as the original. I think Coverdale's ego really screwed him up as his firing Sykes was a big mistake. Hard rock music was big up until the early 90's. Based upon the sales of the 87 album I bet if he kept Sykes the album they would have done would have been far better than slip of the tongue, in sales and in overall quality.

  • im srry folks but this version sucks rocks.

  • brother para la otra consiguete entradas mas adelante! :D

  • The solo is not good INDEED. Vai improvised when he should had stick to the Syke's solo. Actually Vai is a great musician and guitarist but his style never suited Whiteskake that well. Sykes was the perfect guitar player for the band, better than the others before him and better than the others after him. Vai did some good solos "Fool for your loving" and the another one in "Now you're gone". But they are not memorables as Sike's solos.

  • He is Steve Vai, and you are a youtube poster who will die unknown. Wait, what's that? So am I? Most likely, but I at least am aware of this fact.

  • steve's solo is fuckin EPIC!

  • Who said Vai's solo was "horrible"???? Are you people fucking deaf or what??!?!

  • Yeah, this solo was not that good, but Vai is one of the best players of all time!!!!

  • come on people.....ummm yeah steve vai is great, but its not about him right here. How about playing for the song?

  • i was there that night and wow! this gig always has a place in my heart. Everything was perfect, the sound, the line up, the mood, everything!

  • what did he said in 4:10 minutes??, someone can tell me??

  • omfg lmfa@1:51 is that alan partridge?

oh and to the vai haters here..steve does all projects with the utmost commitment and sincerity..what was the bullshit story that went about at the time"adrian hurt his hand" bullshit coverdale wanted some hot guitar so he got the best..MR VAI..and stevie couldnt compromise his awesome ability by having to wait around on a lesser player ie: Vandenberg on getting his tracks done..thats the facts losers

  • I really hate when most of the US audience said crap of WS, that they were just a glam-hard-heavy 80's band (and their only hit was ~here i go again~). F@ck you gringos! Whitesnake is one of the best hard rock bands, and if you don't get it, f@ck you!

  • good shout dude,Mr Coverdale and his gang are still better than ever,Top Fucking Band full stop!

  • @cimmeriabastardsword dude really man ws has been around since late 70's and david was in deep purple he was a rocking way before glam metal come out

  • @cimmeriabastardsword Coz maybe they don't really listen to WS, and what they know is just Here I Go Again...if they really pay an attention to WS, they"ll know how great WS is...

  • @cimmeriabastardsword yup same thing happen to the scorpions, a real shame though very shmaefull

  • @cimmeriabastardsword whitesnake was one of the few glam metal bands in my opinion that actually had some great music . david coverdale i think is one of the most powerfull vocalists out there , , they would be me hands down favorite band if Steve Vai was with them the way

  • @cimmeriabastardsword I'm from the US and I have never said that. I hate when people generalize audiences for bs post on youtube...

  • @PoisonJoviRocker I know but still is sad when even in vh1 or some other mainstream networks only remember Whitesnake as a heavy-glam act just because Coverdale decided to dyed his hair blonde!

Long before they made it in the US with the 87 album they were recognized in Europe and Japan when the band had a more bluesy-sound.

  • Maybe 1983 is the year 'they' opened WhiteSnake's 'door' into the main aim = USA-the biggest music market that Coverdale searched for..I listen to the lyric..

And Vai, as usually, use his own style to play a song. Maybe he can compare to Billy Sheehan for doing a song with his own identity..

    Just a thought.. =)

  • i love Whitesnake, thanks for posting!!!

    ...why Coverdale says "1983" at 1:50 ...??

  • Probably that was the year he met the first time his wife at the time, Tawny.

  • Whitesnake played Donnington in 1983. "Can't stop the feeling I've been this way before..."

  • probably because that was the last time they were there

  • i woz there, my first donington! best one eva!

  • que buena cancion y q buenos coros

  • I like vai's playing normally but that solo was turd compared to sykes' original.

  • Don't thumb down mooseface he's right.

When Vivian did the solo the years before he had the respect to play it untouched.

Vai's a great player and his touches on Slip were great, but 'Is This Love' shouldn't have been re-vaised.

  • He´s already a legend want you or not.

  • did u recorded with a camera pointing at the tv???

  • they pointed a camera at one of the video screens there i'm guessing. they were probably really far out.

  • It would be nice if this one was a remastered DVD realease. This was a surefire power lineup for Whitesnake. And Vai was into the 7 string during this period.

  • What's he on about 1983??

  • @99theinvertedmoron lol, i heard that and i was thinking "what the fuck does '83 have to do with anything?"

  • @BeboAltizer he headlined donnington with whitesnake in 1983 as well

  • @99theinvertedmoron Whitesnake played at donnington 1983 monsters of rock both fantastic concerts

  • @99theinvertedmoron He's talking about the last time Whitesnake had headlined Donnington before that, which was in 1983.

  • The original was played by mr. John Sykes, this song that is!

  • i agree w/ virgilhart vai fricken rips ur face off ROCK ON VAI

  • hey i was there , last song was ain,t no love . just fukin ace , stevie did a good job .

  • i ve only just found out through this that steve vai was in whitesnake after being a fan of his solo albums for 13 years plus, i think he s a legend personally

  • great!

  • great!

  • legendary, stevie, and: david is better singing than robert, this time, for sure

  • "he can't even stay in key." - He was in key that entire video, faggot, again, learn something about music then try to make comments like that. I don't think I've ever seen a single video or heard a sinle audio sample of Vai playing out of key. Also, anybody saying Vai's big headed, just look up his old interviews while he was with this band, he repeatedly said he'd never try and compete with those who he replaced in bands, and that to do so would be foolish and that he respected them greatly.

  • "Vai sucks at playing other peoples solos," - No, faggot, lrn2music. Just because he doesn't play them exactly the same doesn't mean he "sucks" at playing other people's solos. I'm fairly sure if the rest of the lineup weren't happy with him playing the solos with an injection of his own style, then they'd have said; they didn't, and he put a lot of his own personal style into Whitesnakes music, which was the whole fucking point. Fucking moron.

  • yeah sure he plays the solo in his own style but there is just one little problem... it sucks compared to the original.

  • shut up.

Steve Vai made a succes out of the slip of the tongue album. vandenberg wrote it, but vai knew how it had to sound and it was perfect!!!

    ha!

  • Steve Vai is the greatest guitar player Whitesnake has ever had. That's a no brainer! Whitesnake didn't and doesn't have any legit hit right after Vai left the band.

  • sorry to disappoint you guys, but it was Vivian Campbell who played for this song's original solo not John Sykes! And for the retard guy who said that Vai sucks and couldn't stay in key, you're one fuckin' moron! i bet you do not play the guitar, that's for sure!Vai has a doctorate degree in music, so how can he possibly not play in key?! are you sure you're not drunk when you posted your comment?

  • and from berklee...i guess that's not a good college to get a degree from

  • whaha this guy is right.

u know nothing bout this shit.

  • Sorry mate but that was Sykes all over. The only solo he didnt play in the album was 'ere I go again, played by Vandenberg who joined after Sykes (and the rest of the band) got the sack. Then they also brought Viv' in (hence the videos and promo) but didnt work and Vai came later on as an emergency thing since Adrian got injured. Cheers

  • The original lead was played by John Sykes.

  • what the hell was teh overdub 1983 lol good vid but that shoutout of 1983 lol ruined the emotion still 5 stars vai rulz

  • steve vai is a guitar legend

  • Vai sucks at playing other peoples solos, he can't even stay in key. Give me sykes or Aldrich anyday. Doug aldrich has enough respect for one of Whitesnakes greatest songs and hits, and one of Rocks greatests solos to play it spot on.

  • Vai is a totally different guitarrist. Influenced by his personal teacher Satriani and Van Halen while Sykes has a more 70´s style (although not the sound)... Can´t compare them. Steve is playing the solo his own way, respecting the notes, giving them his personal touch and rithm... using his skills and tools...

  • And it´s true Sykes doesn´t play a solo the same way twice. Listen to the solo of Cryin´in the rain... it´s awesome! blows your mind... but he doesn´t play it exactly the same live...

  • great solo..the best

  • I think Vai was the best guitarist that Whitesnake ever had..However all were good..And Beach is fucking awesome!!!!

  • Vai and Sykes

I mean you can see in the band now the influences, Doug Aldrich is the Sykes side of things, Reb Beach is the Vai side of things like

  • All guitarists in the band were brilliant, to say one was better is an opinion.

My personal fav is Vandenberg, but Vai gave them some nice stuff too [ala Fool for your lovin' solo]

  • i like the solo

  • Actually this solo is so good i am going to work on figuring it out note for note!

  • the solo here sounds crap compared to the original record, its the wrong song for whammy bar/feedback shit. For once in his big headed life why couldn't Vai just honour the original properly? cock..

  • Actually, There isnt so much whammy bar at all in this solo that would be anymore of a departure from the recorded solo (by John Sykes) bends. The feedback sustain over several bars sounds cool to me and the phrasing after that, although different than the recording, is fitting and just plain awesome!

  • Look, if Coverdale agreed with the solo changing than why should you worry about it ? If you are that much of a Whitesnake fan than why don't you respect the band ? You see I like tradition too, but that doesent mean that I'm not opened for new stuffs, infact !

  • Totally agree, but hey - you can't beat the hordes of geeky vai fans.

  • I agree about the original solo by Sykes being better. It's so melodic and fits perfectly. It could not have been done any better.

But I disagree about Vai being big headed. Got to meet him on about 2 years ago. Very modest & humble guy. Didn't get on the bus until he signed autographs for every fan there. Not the strange guy I expected.

With his style of playing, he can't be expected to play it like someone else.

  • You also gotta remember guitarist's change solos live all the time. How much you wanna bet Sykes solo would have been completely different live. Just listen to pretty much any solo by any rock/metal band live they rarely play them note for note.

  • Steve vai's music is surrealistic as Salvador Dali is surrealistic in Art, Bruce Lee is surrealistic in Martial Arts, Marlon Brando is Surrealistic in Acting, there are Gods in every method

  • I don't really know what it is surrealism, I only know that is an art style. But, you mentioned "there are Gods in every method" and I respect what you wrote. And I also think Vai can easily make a good solo in almost everykind of rock music style. And this solo sounded very good. :)

  • yeah, surrealism means that it's way beyond our imagination like its a reality of a dream, that's how steve vai and all of those people i have mention individually is. this type of music that is rarely mainstream keeps people's ears and attention away for a long time, and it's usually young people, so they never thought pop, metal, hardrock or whatever, was taken to this substance nowadays.

  • I was very lucky couple of years ago to look up steve vai because i saw his name somewhere and downloaded one of his songs and just paused for a second and my jaws dropped because of how lack of reality his music was. I never knew music was taken to the next level. so then i started to develop a fetish for him and constantly listening to his music, otherwise i'd end up listening to some crappy music because i got bored of american classic rock.

  • You know what, each person sees stuff from a different prespective. Vai's music is his soul or whatever, so that's what he wants to take out to the ppl. Prolly his thoughts on a weird way. If u dont like it simply dont listen to it... Btw, he's good. lol.

  • is this love motherfuckers!

  • Which puts my statement into perfect perspective - Vai's skinny and trying to take centre stage instead of playing as a band.

  • hey dude take a lok to the video response

  • Shame Vai didn't learnes something of Whitesnake beautiful melodies...

  • What? i thought it was the best improved solo he did, he actually did a little worst than this in the buffalo concert in february, but this is around the summer so he did improved, so idk what you're saying

  • I'm not about his playing, I mean the songs. His solo songs are all surrealistic, they don't have the beautiful Whitesnake riffs and melodies. I'm not saying he's a bad player, hey really is one of the best. He plays with great feeling too. But it's all "weird", nothing I get goosebumps from... Except Tender Surrender then... :P

  • Dude are your f'ing nuts?!? Have you listened to any of Vai's music? No grooves? How about The Animal, or the Attitude Song? Bad Horsie, Juice, For the Love of God, Lotus Feet. Shall I continue. Vai's playing took Whitesnake to another level, it wasn't the other way around.

  • Haha, sorry, I just can't agree. Look, I can fully enjoy Whitesnake, I really get warm listening it. But most of Vai's song are too surrealistic to enjoy. I'm not saying they're bad, but doesn't touch me like the Whitesnake songs. Saying that, Vai is still one of my favourite guitarists, except most of his creations...

  • Nail on the head.

Vai's songs are just too shallow - nothing beats the depth of the snake.

Dunno, couldn't take the snake seriously with him - took the macho away.

  • take a look to the video response

  • i already saw it goddamn.

  • hey dude I'm back !

  • take a look to the video response
