Actually the movie started out as joking about strange human beliefs. But at the end comes with a powerful message. Then it occurred to me that Bill Maher said that in this movie he doesn't say that God does not exists, or faith is wrong, he is ONLY asking questions about it. Well, he's NOT. He's directly attacking religion. That's good. But it's a strange thing, since he's such a big supporter of Israel, and the conflict around Israel is also purely religious. So what's his point of view?
Such as? The christians' little magic book isn't any sort of evidence for these myths any more than the muslims' little magic book is evidence for THEIR mtyhs, and if even ONE of the so-called "miracles" written about in it actually happened, how come no-one else noticed it?
i think this scene of the movie is kinda propaganda. the rest of the movie is good. i relize religon is crazy but this last scene uses the method as the movie expelled.
2009/10, "Global Peace Index" of World's most peaceful nation, And top 10 are all basically secular democracies! 1 New Zealand 1. 2 Iceland 1. 3 Japan, 4 Austria, 5 Norway, 6 Ireland, 7 Denmark, 7 Luxembourg, 9 Finland, 10 Sweden. Seems it's well time that critical thinking Humanity, stopped pandering to blind-faith religion, before it literally devastates us all. Bronze-age fantasies are not needed. They are a barrier to progress, a burden that is holding back Humanity.
I propose that we change the name of "Self-fulfilling prophecy" to Auto-fulfilling prediction. This is because the concept is purely temporal plane and has nothing to do with prophecy.
Wow, how enlightening. There really is no such thing as death, all rationalists know that. We will just pretend it doesn't exist, live for ourselves, and think not of consequences that the morrow may bring. Notice Maher does not mention Mao, Stalin, or Pol Pot. What religion were they again?? Please refresh my memory.
Swing and a miss. None of those 3 did anything "in the name of atheism," they did it because they were communists. They weren't killing people because the void where god should be told them to do it, whereas those naming their god as the sole inspirer of their genocide could fill a phone book.
Have you ever seen how MUCH art is based in religion?? Go back and demand your refund from your art history courses at the University.. They have cheated you friend. BAD
Not only religion, but the basic concept of absolute certainty is the real problem. Religion is really just a set of values. It's not different from communism, capitalism, fascism or any other ism. Once the followers of these isms claim their view to be the ultimate truth and choose to preserve them through violence is when the problems start to occur. Unless this tendency is addressed, I truly fear for the future.
When I graduated from High school, I understood that self-fulfilling prophecy is an error in logic. I could then and can still now recognize a self-fulfilling prophecy when it is presented to me.
If you understand this, please explain it to as many people as you can. This is a matter of the survival of our species.
People say all that's happened was prophesied. It doesn't occur to them that it not prophesied because it would happen, but that it happens BECAUSE it was prophesied.
Yes life as we know it will probably end soon. It will end because people who are certain they are acting for their god will kill other people who are certain they are acting for theirs.
i completely agree. The wishful attitude of judgement day believers will make them attempt to fulfill the prophecies laid out. They aren't prophecies in that sense, they are instructions that people of that mind set will want to "check off", one can only hope that they wont succeed and that if they do, when the dust clears they will realize the pointless evil they have wished for.
im thinking that when they tire of looking they'll either understand, or kill themselves, from what ive seen, its looking rather depressingly to be the latter.
orangeacid, thank you for posting this. You may not know it, but if you just look around, a lot of people are on their soapboxes saying it's the end of the world.
I hope the religious people of the world will use their heads for once and realize that god or whoever didn't make GLOBAL WARMING, WE DID.

@Borkstar7 Christians love to claim there is "evidence" but then they can never offer anything.
There is however evidence proving at least half of the bible is dead wrong.

@Borkstar7 Faith IS blind ,that is almost the definition of Faith . AND then please give us the evidence for the resurrection . You have none .

the Ironic part is that (most) religious people CAN'T be converted to "not" believe...
for most people it is the last thing they fall back to, a last resort. The "wanting" to "believe" is bigger as their rational thoughts..
