@alphasxsignal Adjusting your amp is one thing you can do. You can also try picking closer to the bridge, using only the bridge pickup and running it through a compressor. All I did in this song was use the bridge pickup. As for the neck being heavy, whenever I play it, I try to keep one hand on it at all times to keep it from dropping to the floor.
@Dubmaniac Yea I added a neck strap and fixed that problem. The sound is not bad if you get it
dialed in right. :) Dean makes a highend 12 that might be better. The Rickenbackers are almost
to twangy. I was looking at the Double neck from B.C Rich its called the Bitch they just came out with that has tons of controls to get many types of sounds.
killer dude, i'd love to jam with you if you were ever in the oklahoma area. You have great taste in music. Keep on rockin' in the free world good sir.
killer dude, i'd love to jam with you if you were ever in the oklahoma area. You have great taste in music. Kepp on rockin' in the free world good sir.
question for ya buddy... the dean boca, how is that for staying in tune, it obviously sounds good, but i wanna know if it stays in tune and has some decent playability. I really want a rickenbacker, but this sounds really good and my wallet can't handle a rickenbacker right now. Great work by the way. I love the sound. and i'm jealous of your yellow rick.
@GoldenSlumbers89 Yeah, it stays in tune- as well as any othe electric 12 string. It's a royal pain to tune, but it's worth it. It's also easier to play than a Rickenbacker 360-12! I have big hands, so I need the extra space on the fingerboard. If you can find a Boca (or a Sarasota, the deluxe version), buy it. You won't be sorry. One more thing- my Rick used to be white! Show what playing in smoky bars for 25 years will do... (cough, cough)
@Dubmaniac yeah my hands our enormous so i'll have to check this out. 12 strings are like some sort of hidden gem, i'm not sure why people don't always use them, a perfect rhythm instrument, so full and bountiful as far as tonality goes! thanks for the response man!
ps. either way, that rick kicks, yellowed in or not.
Great work! I like the format, video taping while tracking, and cutting it together. Cool! Best one man music video I've seen. Bass, guitar work and singing are all damn' fine.
Next time, though, more boobies. That sells, man. And bling.
Thanks, Scotty. That's quite a compliment coming from the creator of "Apparently this is rock"! So more boobies and bling. Gotcha.
Next time I do one of these videos, I'd much rather have a real, live, sweaty drummer on the track than software drums. You know anybody, Scott? Maybe that guy from the Sally Struthers All Stars...? ;)
man I really enjoyed that. u look like u had alot of fun doing that lol. Man tthats whats its about, having fun and u say ur using cubase, I love cubase i'm going to try and get cubase 5. keep the vids coming ma man peace.
Going by memory, I used a little compression and some plate reverb on my vocals. I don't remember doing anything with the EQ. Another part of the sound is the microphone. It's an Audio Technica AT4047 large diaphragm condenser.
You're gonna have a blast with Cubase! I've been using it for close to 10 years, and I'm still learning things about it.
No, not exactly the same effects on every song, although I usually add a little reverb on lead vocals.
Another trick I've learned for mixing is to turn off my monitor, so I'm listening and not watching all the stuff on the screen. That always helps make it sound better.
I'm not sure which mic you've got, but AKG makes some great recording mics, so if it's a condenser, it should work for what you're doing. BTW, I like what I've heard from you so far- good stuff!
Thanks. She's my baby... I got her over 20 years ago. She was made somewhere between 1977and 1980. I bought her from Jinx Jones, who went on to do session work in LA (like En Vogue's "Free your mind"). We've been through a lot together. I think that I've played her for so long that she now holds part of my soul. If I play any other bass, I feel like I'm cheating on her!
Hiya Dub I have a Boca 12, as well as a 360/12, AND I play this song in my solo gigs. If you like the Boca, try an Eastwood Classic 12. I think you'll really like it.
Huh... yeah, I guess it is in there, now that you mention it. It was purely subliminal- I didn't even realize I was doing it at the time!
The other thing I hear is at the end. The very last few notes somehow always remind me of Rod Stewart's "Maggie May"- once again a subliminal nod to a favorite song of mine. Does anyone else hear it, or is it just me?
One last thing- thanks for saying that you like mine better than the original. Wow! That made my day!
vocals are amazing! and that's the smallest body i've ever seen on a semi-hollow 12 string... is it a little top heavy? and how does it play? i was thinking about getting the dean boca but i haven't found any demonstrations online...
Wow- thanks! I always thought my vocals were my weakest point! About the guitar... yeah, it does tend to drop down at the peghead if you let go of it. What's really cool is that it fits perfectly in a Les Paul case. If you have a chance to get one (especially a 12 string), do it. They're great guitars! I think this video is as close as you'll get to a demo of Dean Bocas online. Except for the Strat solo, I did all the guitar parts with my Dean Boca 12.
No problem- glad I could help! Did you get the 12 string version? Since we talked last, I finally got to play a Rickenbacker 360-12. It's a nice guitar, but truth be told- I like my Boca better. Its fingerboard is just a little wider, and that makes it easier to play. The Rick's neck is just a little too narrow for my fingers. Anyway, enjoy the Boca- I love mine. If you do a video with yours, let me know- I'd love to see it.
Thanks. I wish I could say I wrote it, but I didn't. And I would love to have Pat DiNizio see this one- I'm a big fan of the Smithereens! Maybe I'll try one of their songs next...
Hey Dubmaniac I love the 12 string sound and your singing is well done. I wish I could have your help to learn how to record Groove Agent 2.. that's how I came upon your video I am giving another try to learning groove agent2. but you seem to have gotten it down along with Cubase whic I also have. Keep up the good work. Tony
Hey Tony- thanks! I love the sound of my 12 string too. I wish you could hear the original mix in stereo. Think about it- 24 strings jangling! Too bad YouTube encodes audio in mono.
What I did for the drums was open Groove Agent within Cubase as a VST instrument. Then I set the BPM, chose a drum groove that worked, and put in the drum fills and accents, to make it sound more natural. If you have the manual for Groove Agent, it helps a lot. If you like this one, check out my other videos.
Thanks! It took forever to finish this, between getting a perfect audio AND video take for each part and then synchronizing them afterward- that was tough! But it was a lot of fun to do. And yes, my wife loves it. :D
Mine sounds good picking but when I strum its a little plain. I adjust my amp
setting to brighten it up a little.
Are you doing anything to make the strumming sound better and clear.

I picked up a Boca 12 string and it seems to be a little muddy. If I do some
adjusting in my amp settings it gets better.
I wonder what have you found the sound and how you have it adjusted?
I did have to put a neck strap thing that Martin makes so I could use my
regular strap to the neck. Its neck heavy alright.

Also, does the into sound a bit like Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" to anyone else?

definitely. probably cause "wish you were here" is also played on an electric 12 string

No, I mean actually note-wise, not just the sound.
