I think you meant Finrod. Fingon (Fingolfin's son) was killed by balrogs in the 5th battle. Still epic, but not Sauron. Finrod (Fingon's cousin) had the duel of songs with Sauron, and was finally killed by him in werewolf form.

I imagine the 'Iron Hill' of the song is meant to be Angband (which translates as Hells of Iron). Iron Hill, Iron Hell, same difference...

The Hobbit was written in 1937, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy was written from the mid 30's to the late 40s. There were certainly nerds then. J.R.R Tolkien was a total nerd. So was C.S. Lewis.
