  • Because of that the ATC controler's are getting so much money!!!

  • I've flown on a lot of foreign airlines, and their accent's are often so bad, I've always wondered how the ATC can understand them and vis versa.

    This just explained everything.

  • LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • Search :Misfunctional FAA phraseology by Kent JONES :

The routine words and phrases to be used in messages between pilots and controllers must not be potential sources of confusion. In order to avoid ambiguity, there must be a one-to-one relationship between concepts and their spoken expression. Further, misnomers and other oddities would not inhabit a scientifically valid terminology.(...)

  • Tower,

     Do not get angry.

    Anytime, do not get angry.

    It's make the pilot confuse.

    Cool down,PLS.

  • LOL

  • LMAO the ATC almost wanted to die

  • Stupido americano

  • 1:16 sounds like a John McEnroe moment. lol

  • This pilot is a moron, if i was the controller I'd get pissy as shit as well.

  • @anush10

yeah no kidding, this is why controllers make the big bucks

  • The second time I listened to this, I noticed the very first time the AirChina 981 pilot did not understand the VERY FIRST TIME, the controller was already getting angry and you could tell by his tone of voice.

    Very unprofessional

  • In my opinion, they are both kind of to blame. The controller shouldn't of lost his professionalism because he possibly did not make it clear enough.

Although on the other hand, the pilot should not of been flying overseas if not able to interpret given instructions.

    Peace out!

  • @OmsoiTekken Well, how much clearer can the controller make it?

  • @KnutderElch1981 Not much but still, he could of not gotten angry at the AirChina.

  • @OmsoiTekken He made it perfectly clear. He followed all of the guidelines for communication, the Air China Pilot clearly had limited knowledge of it. It is understandable he got a little unsettled because if the Air China machine had messed up, he might have been stuck with the blame.

  • to the wiiindoooooooooowwww to the raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamp, good one mate!!! TOp X)

  • 你們不又是不會說我們的普通話嗎?

  • I think that at 1:38 he said "november"... again ;P

  • Chinese pilot needs to brush up on his English skills, but the controller was out of line. If you can't handle international flights without losing your professionalism, jog over to TSA and file an application with them there.

  • in my opinion, pilot is to blame. If you can't understand radio communcation english, then don't fly overseas

  • @Julman75 um, excuse me, but i believe the United States is a multicultural country, so don't go on about people not comprehending english

  • @s7r1k30u7 I don't disagree with you! Just saying English is the aviation language. I don't think I'm wrong on that

  • Comment removed

  • this atc pisser has nothing to talk at home.

thats the reason he is jerking off while beeing on his stupid paid job

i cross the fingers that he is finding a prostitude to do a blow job for him

may be afterwards he can do his job in a more relaxed way, this motherfucker

  • OK, China 981, put down your fortune cookie

  • @TracyAndersonFoxhunt ahahah that was funny!

  • I wouldn's say this is a simple problem. English is an Important language now. MA=Noverber? I can't understand. I am not a pilot, I can understand the tower. I just don't understand why the pilot said he need to couch the plane on the right place and move in order to be closer to the station. I am a Chinese student, so there are few words I can understand. But it make no sense, pilot should listen and obey to the tower, That is always right.

  • The English the Pilots speak reminds me of how my Accounting Teacher speaks he is a nice guy but his English stinks.

  • @Shayn911

I just want to say: Screw You!!!

  • @tylerzhang566 So yoo jung wang to se, skoo yoo? :)

  • ATCO sucks!

  • Is air china getting any A380s??? Please reply!

  • @GameMaster2565 nope, i'm being serious here.

  • Wow they are able to fly into International airports, putting passengers on risk.

  • @shivrajvishnu

    What exactly is your duty?

  • Kennedy Tower deals with Thousands of aircraft everyday, it is there job to keep all the planes safe while taxiing and in there airspace. I don't blame this controller for raising his voice slightly to get the Air China flight to do the correct taxiing. If the Controller took this more easily planes could have collided on the taxi ways etc.

  • RAMP TO THA RAMP TO THA RAMP TO THA RAMP.

TOOO THAAAAA WINDOWWWWWWW TO THA RAMPPPPPP.

  • He says 'interrogative' at 1:22.

  • What means: Have they cleared you into the gate

    and

Have you been cleared into the ramp...

Is ramp and gate the same ???

    Thanks ;-)

  • @fghgjng4g5h423ghjgh6 i think that a ramp is that thingy that drags the plane to the gate

  • @CelesticSnow Nope. "The ramp" is a word used for multiple gates. One gate per aircraft, ramp is a collection of gates.

  • I fly into an airport that have international students being trainned there...sometimes I just can' t figure what those foreigners are saying, but the ATC can actually understand and interactive with them....professionally.

  • hmmm, you havnt seen anything yet... Wait to you hear the white guy flying to a Jamaican country... That is when it gets really interesting...

  • I think air traffic control language should be Esperanto or Latin. This way it will be same for everyone.

  • @akpch how about we just use the language of the country that invented airplanes

  • @N700UW Clément Ader and eole ?

  • @N700UW So portuguese?

  • @akpch Lol, I agree!!! Latin language for everybody, yeahh!!! But....with which pronountiation?? ;-)

  • what is a terragative?

  • @rewindablender He said "interrogative," which means "question."

  • OMG, it's scary that that such pilots are actually flying around...

  • Просто са уморени от дългия полет, искат да паркират колкото се може по-бързо и не се вслушват внимателно в това, което им казва диспечера.

  • И къде литнали из небесата като не знаят английски ???

  • Clearly this shows that people from China are stupid

  • OMG!!! :D

  • I think the ATC's style is also confusing ex. OK + question.

  • Agressive and angry??? What the hell are you talking about? I think the ATC was very patient. I would shout the pilot's head off, if I were in his shoes. Guys, just imagine what could happen in a critical situation! Hundreds of lifes would be thrown out of the window, just because the pilot misunderstand the ATC. It should not be allowed!!! Period.

  • It's funny to read posts from people who obviously know nothing about air traffic control. The controller used standard phraseology initially. When the pilot OBVIOUSLY did not understand STANDARD phraseology he tried to speak more literally. English as a second language or not, you people don't seem to understand this is a SAFETY issue. He has a right to get angry when there are lives at stake

  • He said hold short or holy shit???

  • this poor atc is very unprofessional.

  • Pilot understands the words, but can't get the meaning. I also had to look up the word "clear" in a dictionary :) "clear" is a poor choice for some positive, welcomed action or forward movement. ATC should have tried different word - pull, get, come, take, bring (or whatever they do there with jets) - "did they get you to the ramp?". Instead he kept repeating the same thing. Finally he could have asked: "Are you at the ramp?". Google for "clear into" and compare the number with "come into".

  • @user26049 No, he does not ask if he is AT the ramp but if he is allowed to go. So did they get you to the ramp is not a logical question in that situation.

  • I am a pilot and once when I was taxing at Heathrow I saw and heard something unbelievable. I was no. 2 for takeoff and there was a Kenya airways jet ahead of us. He was told to taxi into position and hold, he taxied into position then took off. The tower controler went mental over the head set. Because of this Heathrow flights were delayed temporarily as controlers tried to redirect flights away from the kenyan airways jet. I hope the pilot lost his job.

  • @swjgt i wouldn't be surprised if he lost his job, that's just reckless, especially at an airport that handles as many wide bodies and traffic in general as heathrow.

  • American dispatcher could re-phrase the question as noticing that pilot didn't understand him.

Hey, Americans, how many languages do you speak? Only English? Got not so sarcastic at this point?

In ex-USSR countries people speak at least 2 languages and know English or German or French a bit too. All people I've met in the USA spoke only English, but wanted the whole world speaks English too.

  • @Milkablablabla because we invented the system. whoever makes the game, also makes the rules. had china came up with international language or even aviation regulations prior to US, then we would be talking Chinese too.

  • @skysnet What makes you think other countries had no air traffic regulations? The USA didn't invent THE system. They invented A system, at the same time other countries did the same. Later the US imposed their system on others.

  • @anorak2 Airchina981 is in US airspace, so technically the pilot in command must obey ATC in the correct language.

  • @Milkablablabla HAH your trying to blame the CONTROLLER?!!?!?!?!? OMG EVERY SINGLE AIRLINE REQUIREMENT CLEARLY STATES "you must speak FLUENT english"!! if you are in an AMERICAN country and an AMERICAN controller you either tell company i cant understand english very well or find a different route or something because in AMERICA we speak ENGLISH ANY airline pilot who is in the usa needs to understand ENGLISH or something THIS IS AMERICA NOT CHINA!

  • @thefsxandREALpilot and that plane is airchina not american airlines or anything.

  • @thefsxandREALpilot Americans don't speak proper English though. :) Seriously the controller is part of the problem. Obviously he's never been struggling to understand something yelled at him in a foreign language, otherwhise he would've known what makes life easier in such situations. None of his rephrasing attempts are helpful. For example a person who has trouble understanding the word "question" will hardly make sense of the much rarer and more stilted word "interrogative".

  • @anorak2 That's why to fly in the United States, ENGLISH PROFICIENCY is required to be on everyone's licences.

  • i can imagine the ATC banging his head on the table!!! .... pity him ..... but in the end he got the job done and thats imp

  • More crap those poor basterds in ATC have to deal with...lol....makes me happy Im a pilot.

  • Not having clear in yer mind how interrogative form works is really really BAAAAD

  • On Reuters just now I read "An investigation is underway into why a young child, apparently under an adult's supervision, was allowed to direct air traffic at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, U.S. authorities said Wednesday.

In transmissions broadcast by local media, the young child -- whose age is unknown - can be heard directing pilots for departure, apparently under the supervision of an adult. The incident reportedly happened two weeks ago."

  • I don't know if anyone can answer this, but what are the ICAO standard languages for communications? I'm almost 100% english was once of them but I thought there were a few more.

  • I feel sad for the pilot, but I think Air China needs to train their pilots in English.

  • I just simply love this recording! Its some funny stuff :D

  • have you been cleared to the ramp?

    okay!! Cleared to ramp..

jeez that guy needs to work on the english

  • @DunkableDave

    Yeah, you too!

  • The Responsible for allowing this pilot flying into U.S. must be punished, this is fairly dangerous . . .

if the pilot can`t understand orders to taxi to gate, how would he deal with an engine failure?

but it`s not Pilot`s fault though, the one who allowed him to do so is guilty for this!

  • @gustavocavel Yeah because Engine failure procedures are only succesfully performed by an English speaker pilot right??? It was clear the Air China pilot didn't understand the language, but that doesn't have anything to do with his airmanship capabilities.

  • I think that at the end he said: "Gate number 3 is open so we taxi November" :D

  • god learn sme better english

hate to tell you but english is the language of aviation

  • Let me tell you the true. The person, who talked with the GND is not the pilot of CCA981,he is a staff of Airchina. He ask to communicate with the JFK GND,and pilot agree that(no oen know why),the staff realy Speak shitly at English, but he still hold the communicate.

case by this, this staff lost his job and pilot lost one month's salary.

If every pilot just like this in airchina, how could they stay at the most safety airline position still today?

  • Comment removed

  • rule No. 1

Never Ever Fly Chinese carries --> rubbish pilots (poor English), rubbish service, shit food, poor safety records

  • @FatPizza56

    very agree!!!!

  • 1:21 toragetiv

  • Wonder how English speaking pilots fare in China

  • I just be curious that why ground service kept repeating same order in the same speaking rate after he had known chinese pilot's English was not that good? I thought if the ground service can speak slower ,things will be much easier.

  • I agree with you, the staff members in JFK have always been sooooooooo rude and snobby that today not even American airlines like to fly to JFK anymore!

  • He WAS speaking slowly.. you should hear what they normally sound like.

  • @llanbo :I guess that it will sound like:@#$!%!%!,do ya copy?

whatever,I believe that the ground was definetly capable to repeat the order word by word---the extremely high speaking speed is totally unnecessary and inefficiency to a poor-english poilt

  • @llanbo you are not native english speaker, aren't you?

  • Yes I am native *a* english speaker. You can tell by my ability to form correct sentences in the language.

HAVE-THE-RAMP-PEOPLE-CLEARED-YOU-INTO-YOU-GATE is said very clearly and extraordinarily slowly by Air Traffic Control standards. The "high speaking speed" is essential in ATC as you have to talk to lots of people, all the time. Like it or not, the official language of the aviation world is english. Can't speak it? Get another job.

  • Ok! you're right,I apologize for my ignorance and poor English.

  • @llanbo Unless every flight is performed inside english speaking countries that's impossible, stop with the arrogance English speakers. The world doesn't revolve around you.

  • its been such a shame to the chinese as this pilot spoke poor english but actually some chinese living abroad speaks fluent/ natively.

however, if we explore a lil bit more to the japan pilots, you might found something even funnier (but also very dangerous).

  • omfgg this is so funny..The atc shouldnt haved gotten that aggressive with airChina

  • that is real!

  • Is that real ?

  • yes...

and because of this every pilot, working international, has to do an english-test. ordered by the ICAO.

  • but I don't think the test will be helpful to deal with the language problems like CA981.you see, even passed toefl with a high score, I am still struggling with English while I had been in U.S campuse for one year.

  • yes and this particular 747

has a capacity of 556 passanger

    and thats only china981

there are more planes driving around landing taking off so thats alot of people.

  • There are no Air China 747's with a 556 passenger seating configuration and there never have been.

  • i only said the 747 in qeustion can hold up to 556 passngrs. dint say it was on this flight . its only to show how many peeps can fit in that type of 747

incase it goes wrong , u see

  • absolutely

  • Remember, the pilots will obviously be from all backgrounds due to the nature of flight (international travel). Even with English as a standard, not all pilots will be clear spoken. ATC realises that if they misunderstand a comment and taxi because they think it's permission granted, it runs a risk of collision. That's why it's a stressful job. Humans may crack under pressure.

  • ATC should nt get aggressive!!!!

  • LMAO!!!!!!

  • Don't blame the pilots, blame the company for hiring them...

  • pronunciation of americans is too fast and not distinctly

  • OK, i learned 1 thing now, im going to check so the pilot can speak fluent english before i step on a airplane again, ever.

  • Air China pilot is ....

    He doesn`t undertstands nothing

  • controller yelling, pilot calm almost funny

  • LMAO!!! that was awesome

  • As a Air Traffic Controller myself, by getting agressive is this type of situation only creates further confusion and coas in the flight deck. Yes, all pilots should be able to speak and unsterstand ICAO english but to become that agressive by the ATCO is not proessional to say the least. Certainly this is true for JFK controllers. I would like to see them flying COMPLEX machine in Chep Lek Cok and get around so easily. Send out a follow me vehicle is it gets so bad. Both need sorting.

  • Sorry forgot another "G" in aggressive!

  • @highflyer19 or just do like EETN, they send follow me every time ;)

  • @highflyer19

i work atc. multiply this situation x20 with lack of the language creates this kind of frustration. remember that one pilot in this situation can create a huge problem for all other aircraft including loss of life if he crosses a runway that an aircraft is landing/taking off on.

  • @highflyer19 says the military controller... tell me im wrong.

  • This is why they introduced the English Proficiency score on pilot's licenses now.

  • Comment removed

  • Would it be so hard to learn the world language or at least aviation english for a job you earn a hell lot of money for and in which you are in response of many souls?

  • Believe me, The Chinese have difficulty learning a foreign language.

  • No for a number of reasons:

    A. Extra cost for man that does not need to be there

    B. Extra costs for training that man

    C. Creates delays which could possibly lose lives.

So why not just have pilots learn one global language which they can use at every airport around the world?

  • i cant beliv it, that is an inernational pilot?man o man

  • Air China scares the hell out of me. . .

  • Shame on Air China for sending this POORLY trained and unqualified pilot into New York. International Aviation Law requires that all pilots regardless of the country of origin be required to speak, read, and understand FLUENT ENGLISH. CASE CLOSED. This is why I do NOT Fly NON U.S. Air Carriers. Period.

  • '' This is why I do NOT Fly NON U.S. Air Carriers. Period. ''

what about Air Canada and British Airways ?

  • Whoa "This is why I do NOT Fly NON U.S. Air Carriers. Period.", that was kind of overkill. Many Asian carriers are good, like Singapore Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Cathay, Malaysia and Thai! Plus the European and Middle Eastern Carriers! What did you think? Only Americans speak English?

  • It doesn't really matter if the airline is US based or not, if you fly to another country you could have a controller just like this pilot..it has happened.

  • You said it... English. Not Yankee casual talk which does not even follow the ICAO standard protocol. There is no doubt the AirChina pilot's English is inadequate to say the least but the jerk ATC in desperate need of anger management training makes the situation even worse.

  • @LKHK76 Imagine if you had some pilot in command of a plane full of people (more than 100) and he couldn´t talk to you (which he is obligated to), if you can´t comunicate with him he could crash, specially if he acknowledge everything you are questioning!! I fully understand the ATC and he didn't got so angry, he actually managed it very well calm and at the end he understood there was no way he was going to understand him so he cleared him. I would've revoked that pilots license

  • @Pilingolandia I don't think anyone disputes language incompetence of the Air China pilot, but he's there, taxiing his jet in the middle of the JFK, and now what? You either go out of your way to help him out or vent your frustration. The ATC controller who, obviously lacks social intelligence to interact with anyone who is not native speaker, chose the latter. And it only made the situation worse.

  • @LKHK76 I would've been that pissed too, bu you are right he must've been more mature and accept the situation, then complain.

  • @LKHK76 dude as an airtraffic controller myself... if I were on ground frequencies (which are the fucking hardest to control) and i was basically talking to a wall that would just echo back everything I yelled and could possibly have a danger hazard, I would be screaming too.... are you a controller? cause even on the ground you can get a "deal" if 2 aircraft get too close and if he was to taxi to the completely wrong side of the airport and/or the wrong direction... it'll cause too much danger

  • hahaha roger ramp to the ramp

  • wtf

ever heard of LiveATC you dumbass

This is on their library as well as many other file libraries. It is CERTAINLY real

  • true. familiar voice on JFK Tower. Lots of idiots working in the airport(airlines)

  • : ) looooooooool wtf

  • i agree with you

  • Comment removed

  • it is dangerous..how about the guy in the tower? speak slowly would help, not louder!!! a stupid mistake.. how about someday, ppl need to communicate in chinese? we dont laugh...

  • A prerequisite of becoming an international pilot is you must speak fluent English. I believe Air china was banned from Sydney airport for this exact same reason

  • Air Traffic Controllers generally speak quickly so they can give instructions to one aircraft and then move onto another aircraft requiring instructions. Especially at JFK things can get pretty busy. If every other pilot can understand the controller then the controller doesnt need to be holding the Air China pilot's hand, so to speak. This is not the first time an incident like this has occourd. Many miscommunications have been happening with foreign airlines not just Air China.

  • thanks for letting me know the professional info about the air traffic. but my point is, they can not expect every pilot can speak fluent english as they do, they may be busy, but safety is no.1, right?from the beginning of conversation, controller would know the situation, slowing down a lil bit would be reasonable, and the controller in the vid is too mean to me.

  • Well, its funny you should mention that. Actually all international pilots are required to speak fluent english, as you might have read on the other comments, because english is the official language of aviation. But I do understand where you are getting at and yes I do think the controller could have handled the situation a bit better and I dont think he was mean but probably stressed out. Remember its not only the Air China he has to worry about its all of the other planes on his frequency.

  • just imagine stupid mistake there..shouldn't he speak SLOWLY, instead of repeating?

  • it all starts to get funny at 1:08

  • I totally agree

  • we should certify everyone who wants to land in this country and reciprocally. this video is scary.

  • With hundreds of people's life at risk ..this is just unacceptable

  • This gets funnier, and scarier, every time i listen to it :o)

  • Dude, learn english if you want to be a pilot.

  • interrogative

  • Jajajajaja!!!! I just listen a Air Chine 982 Heavy taxiing to the runway in Kennedy!!! jajajajajajaja It's very funny, I publish that tomorrow on starts of next months :) Thta's good jajajaj!! Airchina the bests!! jaja =)

  • Every time I listen to this I feel embarrassed for them.

  • We've got 50 million of these guys going through UND right now. A friend of mine almost got hit by them.

  • I am teaching aviation English to Chinese air traffic controllers now who are visiting Miami-Dade College School of Aviation. They are also training for parallel runways since there new runway will be in operation at Shenzhen in 2011. I have to say that controllers speak fairly well and FAR better than Chinese pilots.

  • Do people really have trouble telling the difference between "their" and "there"? or are they just doing it on purpose?

  • ha ha

    lmao

  • As a flight instructor I had a Japanese student and this was exactly how our exchanges would go. Sometimes I would have to repeat a question 10 times because he kept thinking it was an instruction. This brought back memories....of me banging my head against the instrument panel!

  • I hear you man. I taught both Japanese and Chinese students. They couldn't understand basic questions/commands from ATC. It took a while before I let them solo.

  • Shouldn't people working at controlling towers speak slower? I mean it's not just for chinese or japanese pilots, but for all others whose native is not english. They shouldn't speak so fast like everybody is a native speaker. If they slow down a bit and speark more clearly, I think the problem is at least half way solved.
