the reason that he had to save the car more then himself was that in the movie, after seeing his house get destroyed by the bad guy and seeing the bad guy kidnap his sisters , thus forcing jackie to take part in the race in japan. jackie pulled all of his resources to make the car. and crashed it after making the qualifying timing. without a car, he cant compete in the race and save his sisters

In the story I believe that was his team's last car and he was trying to save it otherwise he would have forfeit the race. I think thats why he tried putting that fire out first.
