  • Is it just me that finds these somewhat silly, and even a little disingenuous?

How many times can the same question/s be asked, receive replies/responses, only to completely ignore them.

How many video's are here on UTube now concerning these same questions, how many times do they need to be asked and answered, only to be completely ignored.

If they don't understand by now, they either have the mental faculties of a piss-stone, or have no intention of understanding.

    Peace.

  • @martiangrundy I think it is two cases. One is, as you mention, questions posed for effect with no intention of being discussed. The other one is people who wants to question the position, but don't want to assume what the "other side" stands for. The second approach is good, however, most of the time, the answers are not as simple as they wanted and the discussion die.

  • @TheLittleDonkey For instance, Jack (the guy asking here) is very philosophical, and probably he has realized that the ethical truths that atheists claim to have cannot be applied to anyone unless they acknowledge a universal moral truth. And by that atheism is no different from religion. They both assume/believe in something fundamental that cannot be shown to be rational, and by that he can say that atheism is itself guilty of the very same flaw that religion is accused of.

  • @TheLittleDonkey

Yes I'm familiar with Jack. Though I don't happen to share your sense of optimism.

I'm also not inclined to agree completely that he has a "philosophical approach".

Why are these questions STILL being couched in this fashion? To atheists. Have they not been informed time after time that atheism is merely the rejection of the god claim. Nothing else.

How is it even a question, to ask disparate people about something, when they may not even have anything else at all in common.

  • @martiangrundy I agree with you. The reason, I can only speculate, is that it is difficult to understand that the alternative to religion would lack "a reason to live"-component.

  • @TheLittleDonkey

I'm not understanding you. Atheists claim to have ethical "truths"? Further, "acknowledge a universal moral truth"?

What universal moral truth would that be?

I'm from the UK, MOST of the people I know/have known are atheists (as are most people in the UK) yet don't necessarily have anything else in common. The vast majority wouldn't even know what you were even talking about.

Things need to be asked of the individual to conflate people because they are atheist only confuses.

  • @martiangrundy I think you misunderstood me. I tried to speculate why theists time and time again feel compelled to ask atheists about these issues. I cannot speak for Jack, I was only trying to speculate about what kind of motivation he could have for asking us these questions.

  • @TheLittleDonkey

    I think it's reciprocal. I wasn't having a go at you either.

It's just that I can find no way around them being disingenuous, in keep asking these self same questions, time after time.

Though being from the UK, it's a much simpler thing, as most people over here are atheists. We tend to think in a completely different way. The idea that one is an atheist very rarely ever comes up. I just couldn't imagine even being asked these sort of generalising questions from a UK person.

  • @martiangrundy sure, but what my long-winded speculation boils down to is that it is apologetics. But I am as bad, I cannot understand how they can believe the trinity. I find all explanations to be absurd. The only reason I would ask that question is that I would hope that they would realize that it is absurd. I guess that Jack finds atheism absurd, and hope that in trying to answer his questions atheists would realize that atheism is absurd. Disingenuous perhaps, or just rhetorical.

  • @TheLittleDonkey

Yes, but that's part of my point. To ask a theist is quite reasonable, seeing they supposedly follow the same deity, and the same religion and tenets.

An atheist however doesn't necessarily have anything else whatsoever in common with another atheist. Doesn't necessarily even need to be a rational critical thinking individual, ( I should know, I know LOTS of those).

This has been explained over and over again. Is already down in video after video.

    Why are they still asking?

  • @martiangrundy it's a good point

  • watched your vid thanks for the thoughtful response. peace

  • @TogetherForPeace my pleasure, I like your philosophical approach to religious debate and think that your approach is needed if we even going to understand each other.

  • Why are you making videos like this? Why not just write a blog?

  • @themanofearth because I suck?

  • @TheLittleDonkey LOL! I wasn't trying to attack. It's really easy to make videos I was just wondering why you chose to make these types of videos instead of making actual videos or writing a blog.

  • @themanofearth well, long story. But the main reason is that after some threats I decided to do anonymous videos, and I haven't bothered to really do a "normal" video since then. I don't really see any obstacle to doing that now, other than I'm not a native English speaker. To be honest, I think it is because I don't really have enough time to do videos, and these text-babies I can make on a coffee break. Do you think I should do "talkies"?

  • @TheLittleDonkey Well they're much more effective even if you don't show your face. Simply recording your voice as you do the text will up the effectiveness of your vids in getting your point across even if you're not a native English speaker. :-)

  • @themanofearth good point, I will keep that in mind.
