Basilone didnt really interested me when I watched the pacific. To me he was not braver then any other men, personally I think men like Burgin were a lot braver. They raped a lot of korean women and men were forced to fight alongside the japs against the US.

what im try to really say is that john and these marines won because of skill, tatics, weapon knowledge and knowledge of the average jap soldier and their tatics on Guadalcanal. im also saying you have to add all the shit they had with them to help during the battle, ammo, belt feed M1917A1 HMGs, and they were in trenchs. the japs did banzis at them, meaning they ran basically into the gun fire, and since john and the marines were in trenchs the jap couldnt get clear shots at them.

But Basilone and his Marines fought all night against superior forces; the 1st Marine Division was on its own with no supply lines for 6-months, and endured constant shelling and bombing, as the U.S. Navy was forced to withdraw in the face of an overwhelming Japanese Naval force.

I'm not trying to say that Basilone wasnt brave, but I think he got to much credit and to much honor. The leaders forgot men like Ack Ack, Hillbilly, Gunny Haney, Snafu, Burgin, they held the guys together and made them stronger. Basilone didnt really interested me when I watched the pacific. To me he was not braver then any other men, personally I think men like Burgin were a lot braver. Basilone was made a heroe by the leaders of the corps, and yes what he did was brave, but I dont understand why he got a medal of honor and a lot of other men didnt. They just needed John to get publicity. To me men like Blithe ( from BoB ) who conquer their fears or men like Roe ( the medic ) are the real heroes.

According to many WWII veterans, the Japs pissed on American POWs until they drowned to death. And one thing the series doesn't cover which I know cause my wife is Korean and told me, is that prior to and during the war the japs invaded korea. They raped a lot of korean women and men were forced to fight alongside the japs against the US.

what im try to really say is that john and these marines won because of skill, tatics, weapon knowledge and knowledge of the average jap soldier and their tatics on Guadalcanal. im also saying you have to add all the shit they had with them to help during the battle, ammo, belt feed M1917A1 HMGs, and they were in trenchs. the japs did banzis at them, meaning they ran basically into the gun fire, and since john and the marines were in trenchs the jap couldnt get clear shots at them.

I wake up every day,do my job,be with my family,go to the store,do housework,fix the car,watch TV,talk to people and live my life. Mr. Basilone fought for our country against an evil enemy and gave his life on Iwo and saved lives. I live today in this free country because of what he did. He was a great man that I could never live up to be. Thank you Mr. Basilone.

@DanielScottRitchie Read the MOH citations of both Murphy and Basilone. Both went above and beyond the call of duty and EARNED the MOH. But Basilone and his Marines fought all night against superior forces; the 1st Marine Division was on its own with no supply lines for 6-months, and endured constant shelling and bombing, as the U.S. Navy was forced to withdraw in the face of an overwhelming Japanese Naval force.
Murphy was a hero, but Basilone & company put forth superhuman effort!

Looking at this, why does society call athletes heroes? Yeah, all the athletes basically do is put a ball in a rim or run it across the line, but this men such as BASILONE took a bullet for us.

I got some Marine friends and I gotta say they r just like us Army guys, just different uniforms... Thank U Basilone for your service to your country... Schwazkorpf got the first year and this year i voted for John B.....and if u go on the site it doesnt ask where ur from so come on and vote Philly....

Looking at the life of a guy like John Basilone makes you realize how hollow, silly ignorant and meaningless it is to use the term "Hero" for a football, baseball, basketball player, actor etc.
The name "Basilone" should be better known in American homes than the names of sports figures, politicians and actors. It is a shame and damned sad that is not the case.
