Wow! Kyu looked so young at that time!He sang the song sadly on the show which was different from the video version.Anyway,I love his singing !No other versions could be compare with his! His wife is beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this video.Kyu-chan was a very special person. I like very much his joy and his wonderful smile :-) But especially when listening to his songs and knowing about the tragic end of his life (and that of so many other victims of this terrible crash) I always feel grateful to be alive. For the people who know only Sukiyaki ;-), check his other songs on YT and don't miss 太陽と土と水を/坂本九 Maybe the happiest song ever and such a beautiful message for all of us !!!
@roaringwaterbay The plane's systems failed which caused it to spiral out of control, the pilots tried to make an emergency landing, but ended up crashing into a mountain.
@jwjwmarcum - Taste of Honey had an excellent, pretty song that borrowed the melody and structure of "Ue O Muite Arukou," by Kyu Sakamoto, but it wasn't a translation. It's not even close to the actual translation of the song.
"Sukiyaki" is something that was chosen to appeal to an American audience, the actual title translates to "I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall." Isn't that a more beautiful and romantic title?
I played this at my wife Kyoko's funeral service back in 1991 and every August for the Obon festival. It says what is in my heart. Now I pray for all those families in Japan that can't even find their family members to have the service for. To all those families... you are in our hearts and minds. ALWAYS
Wait a second, they had this guy come out and sing like he was a japanese jerry lewis or something. we kept expecting dean martin to pop out. look at all of the youtube videos and you see this cat can sing for real. but of course american tv wants him to live up to th demented eir stereotypes. That was foul!!! We'll take mike douglas over steve allen with his corny ass!
@nublackmusic You don't know what the fuck you are talking about for Kyu Sakamoto was treated with great respect in America. Steve Allen was very honored to have Kyu on his show and always treated his guests with equal dignity. YOU ARE A JACKASS !!!!
@nublackmusic You are the Fucking Moron who brought up the fact that Host Steve Allen was making him out to be a Japanese Jerry Lewis, not me !!! You don't even have a clue about the show at all
I suggest you just stick with your "N-WORD" Music and not but into something you know nothing about !!!
I like this song and there is agood version in english.. but isnt it discordant to sing such a sad song with a big smile on your face,i love the guy but it seems off.lol
@xtiml The way I see this song is like this: the hardships that come with life ( relationship troubles, troubles with the self, etcetera) are the ones that make us sad. But there is so much humanity in pain and sadness. So this song has more than sadness. It's sad because one can feel so alone (hittori "one person), but thank goodness we can experience it all and keep "walking with our eyes turned upwards" towards the next stage in life. It's a celebratory song. : )
My 5 yr daughter was singing along with a chinese song todayin the car,so I had to find this to show her what this old man listened to in 1963.It eyes are all well up now,and I will continue to come back and listen.I remember the news when he died how he wrote a letter to his daughter on the plane before crash. In my mind I thought maybe it was ten years ago,but 1985?Hard to believe how fast time passes when your having fun. From me to all a good time for all.

His wife is not shown on the black and white Steve Allen show. He was indeed married in 1971. His wife appears in the 1998 Japanese television show and discusses his life and his appearance on the Steve Allen Show 35 years earlier. He died in a plane crash in 1985.
Let me apologize first since I am 51 and only knew his songs as "oldies" and love them to this day but, how did he die? I have saved all of his videos from here because, I just can't explain it, I love his music. I don't understand the words but i still love listening to it. I can't explaint it. Sorry.
I don't recall the names but I had an aunt that gave me an album of his back in the 70s and there were a few songs on there that I really liked at the time. In fact, I wish I had all of the albums and 45s that I got rid of decades ago. I miss them.
@RocStarr913 One of other big hits of his was called "Miagete goran yoruno hoshi wo - Look up to see the stars in the night". Vid is up here as you can easily dig :)
look up with watch?v=eLmhRMl4kJk hope this works ;)
taken from another post: In 1985, Sakamoto San was one of 520 killed in the crash of Japan Airlines flight123. Thirty-two minutes elapsed from the time the bulkhead failed to the time of the crash, long enough for Sakamoto San to scribble a shakey farewell to his wife.
@pheatetr I also feel the same way, I dont know what happens but it amazes me, is a joy, while moves me, and i m listening, listening, listening to...
I think the video of the Japanese show that featured Kyu's wife was 1998 and in that show, they showed the clip from Steve Allen Show, which was in the '60's. Also, in the Japanese show, they mention that it has been 13 years since he passed away.
Steve Allen show 1963 this video is 1998 the comment is yukiko kasiwagi of his wife comments was neatly's wife is. Might be had in his conflict nobody knows. Steve Allen show before he received Edo Sullivan show offer was photography of the movie, unavoidable but qijiang.
In 1965, my Pa bought his single 45rpm record in Kuala Lumpur for 1.50 Dollars now is worth more about 150 Dolars. But, its b'cos his song that have gone into part of life in Malaysia during the 60's.
To see a picture before she meets Sakamoto, she talks about surprise and joy. Finally she talks in this way. I want to show daughters this picture. Thank you for showing a precious picture.
I had 2 friends that died with Kyu Sakamoto on that faithful day and every time I hear this song it make me think how precious life is and how grateful I am to still be here. RIP Mako, Kim & Kyu

@margolou2010 Thank you so very much for your comment. If we want to or not it's always been one day at a time. Ever since I was a young boy I've always love the "Sukiyaki " song not only do I have it in my computer, iPod & 1950's juke box and can listen to it any time I want. I know that even till this day Kyu Sakamoto is the only Japanese person to have a #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard charts. That is a great honor to him. I thanks the person who posted this very rare clip and sharing it with us
