I never owned a computer growing up, just a console. I stumbled onto this game as my first PC game, randomly installed on my grandpas computer in '94, when I was still a kid. Complete with that code-book and mini novel that came with it.
Can you imagine the mind-fuck I experienced? All that simulator freedom, the music, fighting for the bad guys? It was like, oh hey, what's this next to the solitaire and mind-sweeper icon? Oh, just the COOLEST FUCKING THING EVER.
Still the best Star Wars game ever made. I always get goosebumps watching the intro.
I particularly enjoy how Tie Fighter adds "shades of grey" morality into what was a very black-and-white setting. You learn that your average Imperial saw themselves as fighting for a worthy cause; to maintain order and justice in the galaxy. Truly thought-provoking. It's even more commendable that the developers stayed true to this vision to the very end rather than cop out and have you defect.
@darthmoon01 the average hardware back then probably couldn't support the large amount of vertices of a super star destroyer... if it won't look good, might as well omit it... otherwise it becomes a half-baked try-to-hard attempt and this game's standings would drop..
There's also another thing to consider - such a large craft being in a scenegraph... will probably incur a lot more calculations than a normal star destroyer - especially when it enters the battle...
@thrawn80 Yeah I know, I'm 19 and have the advantage of great graphics and what not. I'm surprised I still have this game though, and the computer to play it on!!
@darthmoon01 there're several fan-made SW games out there that remakes Battle of Endor with SSD Executor.. mabe one day I'll make a remake of TIE fighter ... just the fighting part... and allow a few HUNDRED fighters and dozens of capital ships fighting each other all at once... mabe... yeah :P
@PacificAssault1 this is from the old SoundBlaster 16 or Pro series... i think an Adlib card is sufficient to play this as well... but dun think PC speaker can ... though it can play PCM lar...
I got the CD rom dos version of this game, but it won't work with DOS box because it says that I'm installing from the hard drive (seeing as dos box makes the mounted drive the hard drive) so, what did you do to get it to work? I tried with it in the CD drive, and copied the files to my computer and tried that. what did you do to get it to work?
This is the best flight simulator ever and the only reason to buy a joystick. I completed the entire game including the Collector's CD-ROM's specials.
I knew I burrowed this game from the library and played for 4 weeks straight on and completing all 13 episodes. I destroyed two mouses while playing it, though... XD
I thought the voice acting was incredible. the british voices. I used to love calling for reinforcements. "request for reinforcements acknowledged"
sometimes some fighters would show up,sometimes a star destroyer would. impressive. what would have made it more awesome would be if it had the background noise of a tiefighter.
I had a DOS computer a LONG time ago (in a galaxy far far away... nah, jk :P) and I LOVED playing this game! But we got rid of that computer several years ago and now we have a computer from Dell. I still have the CD for this game, but each time I try to install the game, a black window pops up and it says that it's preparing to install a game, but then it goes away instantly. Does this mean I can only play the game on a DOS computer?
THRAWN?! Vice Admiral THRAWN?! Dude, I read a few books about Thrawn, after the Emperor's defeat in Episode VI of Star Wars, in the books Thrawn is a Grand Admiral.
Ah the nostalgia... the music, the graphics... this takes me back. Thanks for uploading it man, and giving another chance to re-live the fond memories of playing it over and over again. Used to play it with computer mouse and still did ok. Literally haven't seen this in thirteen years. A shame that this disc is incompatible with newer Windows... my Win95 computer crashed many years ago and now there seems to be no way of accessing this game. Anyone know if there's a way to hack into it on WinXP?
Ahh man this takes me back, i loved this game, it had a good story and i always liked the idea of fighting for the Empire. You get to fly with Darth vader on a few missions, although you can't kill him dammit...lol The Missle Boat missions where quite hard when you had to be quick to make sure you launch those missles at the right target quickly. It was easy to hit with locked missles but that changed in X wing alliance when they kept being shot down before they could strike, dumb fire ftw.
i used to have this game but never really got to enjoy it. i played with the mouse rather than a joystick and for some reason flying upwards semmed to be impossible and took forever so staying on target was too difficult. :(
Best intro for a video game ever made, ahhhh the good old days when Lucasarts was cool (I got the Collector's Edition of Tie Fighter with Secret and Curse of Monkey Island, The Dig, Afterlife, Full Throttle and Dark Forces, ahhhhhh the memories ^_^)
Yeah it comes automatically when starting the game. Are you using DOSBox to play? In the dosbox.ini (or something like that) is the value for the joystic, put it to 2axis, and it should work. If you're using something else to play, I don't know what to do. :s
This game was awesome, and it was a nice touch to get to play as the Empire.

That throne chair at 1:43 looks a lot like the Senate Chancellor seat in the prequels. I can't believe I missed the foreshadowing.

Oh the fond memories. My first Star Wars game so I guess I was lucky. Hey look, Coruscant before the crappy prequels.

Man, I REALLY want to play this game...
Is it me the does the intro sound a tad cheerful? Darth Vader must be having a good day.

I prefer Scott Lawrence as Darth Vader over that guy who plays Chad Vader, forgot his name but I know he was in The Force Unleaashed

the biggest disappointment to me about tie fighter was that there were no super star destroyers like Vader's Executor :(
