i hate to say friends but it is about the singer in this song not the pianist. her singing tho in this is flawless...idk if it had character but perfect singing
The pianist is David Garvey. He was a long time collaborator and dear friend of Ms. Price, beginning in the mid 50s. He also worked with Lucia Popp, Hermann Prey and Itzhak Perlman. He was a beautiful pianist and a lovely man.

@jppx8mu9 Sadly, that's just the way it works. If it was a world-famous pianist, but a wonderful, albeit not internationally famous singer, the name of the pianist would be broadcast. We know Leontyne Price when we see her. We don't know who the pianist is by sight. If you happen to know, I'm sure that Oneguin would add that information in.
Why is the pianist not credited along with Leontyne Price in the title of this video? In fact, he isn't credited at all. Grrr. He plays so beautifully, too. Too bad he is considered inconsequential.

Fabulous rendition! The pianist played the introduction beautifully; however, with lots of "show." A couple of Leontyne's "R's" sounded quite American early in the piece...but otherwise absolutely perfect!
Danke Blockflote1. My critical opinions are marked "spam." Great company here. Especially gifted in dumbness smcdon817 -- I said listen to Della Casa or Fleming but no, they know better without comparing. How bloody dumb can you get? Beats me..
@albalbpale ... your comments were marked as spam because they were rude (& apparently still are)... i refuse to argue about the validity of someone's art with youtube critics. Esp art from a legend like Ms. Price. I also have no desire to prove my own intelligence to you... its like the old saying goes that we all should have learned as children. If you don't have something nice to say... DON'T SAY IT. Good day to you and I pray that Ms. Price can move you the way she continuously moves me.

Are you people sick or what? Possibly the worst "interpretation" (in quotation marks because it is plain mangling the song). Maybe if she learned some German? Maybe? No.
Dive! Diva! Diva! What an angel. God gave her one of the most in creditable voices ever. Leontyne honey I love you so much.. and Morgan is one of my favorite songs.
I don't think he was asserting himself, but rather he was able to actually play the music in a way that matched a superb singer. He did not have to dull it down. He is wonderful.
That he is! I had the pleasure of singing with him once in a competition in DC, and he was the official accompanist. He made it possible for every singer in that competition to give his or her best.
David Garvey, pianist, spent a brief time teaching accompanying at Univ. of Texas in Austin during the 1970s, and I was incredibly fortunate to get to work with him a little. In recitals he created symphonic tone poems on the piano.
i think voice and musicality is wonderful. it's a pity that u can not feel the emotion of the text of the song...she's not german and neither she thinks german...these are wonderful german poems and you have to explain it while singing...listen to norman or schwarzkopf and you get the difference
This song made me cry when I first heard Ms. Price sing it. And the pianist is SUBLIME. Transcendent experience. If I can create this kind of experience for my audience one day, I know I will die a happy person. -Chinwe
The accompanist is the late David Garvey, who accompanied Ms Price for many years. While I was a grad student at UT-Austin in the 1970's, I was given the opportunity to have a few lessons with him. He was always very kind. His playing in this video is nothing short of sublime, as were so many of his performances. He is deeply missed by many accompanists and soloists the world over.
Ms Price was a phenomenal soprano with a soulfull quality internalized into her classical training, which also, in my opinion, can be found in the voice of Jessye Norman, whose rendition of this masterpiece is on par with Ms Price´s. They´re both outstanding. Ms Price does appear a bit uncomfortable in this video. Singing at the White House may not be an ultimate artistic experience, more of a status spectacle.
La Signora Price was referred to as "Queen" by Jessye Norman. Jessye holds Leontyne in a VERY high esteem. Obviously if La Norman holds her in such a high regard it is for a reason!
crowebaby, of COURSE she's no Jessye. They ae two completely two different kinds of phenomenal sopranos. And isn't that a fantastic thing! Neither is an apple an orange... or, in La Norman's case, a cantaloupe...
My compatriot, soprano Birgit Nilsson, arrogantly referred to Ms Price as that singer with the creamy soprano voice. Creamy or not, it´s a miracle. Nilsson´s steely soprano may have stricken audiences by it´s pure force. Ms Leontyne makes you feel humble for quite other reasons. She is superb! And yes, the pianist is fantastic!
The superb combination of singer and accompanist is just stunning. They almost seemed to breathe as one, and be one in mind and heart. What a beautiful performance. Thank you for posting this.
One of the greates voices of any time, as well as one of the greatest pianists of any time.

This is really quite lovely. But, no one sings "Morgen" (or Strauss, for that matter) like Renee Fleming.

The worst rendition of Morgen I have ever heard. I love Leontyne Price in Verdian roles but this is totally out of her league. Sorry.

@promptersbox The lack of refinement.

@promptersbox do you have any critical faculty left? I posted: "Renee Fleming or Lisa della Casa anyone?" a year ago and you're still "lost?"
and other people posted something too -- it's a plain horror she sings this song.
Compare with the singers I suggest. And read the critical entries, not the ones: Magnificent, Superb, etc. Use your brain and ears.
