  • The awkward moment when the female extras are dressed sluttier in the 80's than today

  • fallout 3 and indiana jones and the temple of doom. DOUBLE WHAMMY BABY!

  • Is there any major female musical role Patti Lupone hasn't played!? Eva Peron, Nancy (Oliver!), Fantine, Reno Sweeney, Norma Desmond, Annie (Get Your Gun) Mrs Lovett and Mamma Rose. Freaking frak..

  • I saw them both and they were BOTH great!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Don't insult LuPone by mentioning her in the same sentence as that overrated starlet SF with the squeaky voice, hammy acting, and mediocre dancing skills!

  • @ruthiehenshalllesmiz you clearly don't know anyting about the theatre or performers

  • Patty LuPone has one powerful voice...that lady probably doesn't even need a microphone.

  • Wow 1988 I was born this year :p I'm so glad they revisit these musicals and share then with the world that was once unaware of them existing.

  • I personally find this performance a lot better than the 2011 version with Sutton.

  • I didn't know that Patti could tap!!

  • this makes me smile

  • please don't hate on me.. but personally i like this choreography then the revival in 2011..... it's more flashy.... where as 2011 is still awesome but not as flashy

  • Yup. I would have been in the chorus standing at the back. XD

    Wonderful rendition.

  • Patti is a musical theatre legend! All of these comparisons between her and Sutton are ridiculous, they both bring something different and utterly unique to this number and to their character. Comparing them is ridiculous because, although they are singing the same song, both performances are completely opposite of the other. Yes, I prefer Sutton! But that comes down purely to the fact that I saw Sutton's version first and therefore it was the version I feel in love with. I'm biased!

  • Why can't we all just love Patti and Sutton equally. I sure as hell do when it comes to Anything Goes.

  • I'm 12 and I think this is amazing.. Patti's voice is beautiful! I could listen to this over and over again!<3

  • I think Patti is amazing! Her voice is beautiful but she is over exaggerating this song and this character. Plus, her dancing cannot be compared in anyway to Sutton. Sutton is a better dancer then Patti and they both bring different things to the character of Reno Sweeney... Like if you agree

  • AMAZING.

  • she looks like patricia quinn in rhps.

  • okay best tap shoes ever. i love them.

  • definetly clearer than cole porter anyway thank god for fallout3

  • @thiliuspetrix Your post doesn't even make sense. Tis IS Cole Porter's music & lyrics fool,.

  • I could listen to 2:20 over and over

  • Patti lost the Tony award to Joanna Gleason in Into The Woods that year. Patti wuz robbed!!!!

  • @AsiaMs Sorry but Joanna was phenomenal as the Baker's Wife.

  • 0:40 I love how you can see that hand in the middle-bottom.

  • @OlsenFairReview Aha! The conductor. I had to look a few times to see what you meant.

  • The costuming is so awful and trashy, perfect evidence that the 80s were the nadir of fashion and style. The dancers look like they should be on a football field not a Broadway stage. Lupone's costume looks like it came from a high school production. And don't get me started on the dreadful gloves. Her singing is the only way I can get to the end.

  • @highway14kid So funny you'd say that. In the 80's we were all so obsessed with railing on the 70's, we thought we were so cool. Looking back on it, yeah, I can't disagree. But Patty... oh Patty. OH PATTY!

  • Patty Lupone and Sutton Foster are both brilliant. Why does one have to be better than the other? It's all about opinion and which version of the character you like better. Those who are saying their opinion is better because the other person knows nothing about broadway, seriously get over yourself.

  • Okay, all right. I love this vid of LuPone. I'm a LuPone whore, maybe.

But! I just now went to the Sutton Foster vid, just to see if maybe I was wrong, but I'm not.

NO WAY is Foster better than LuPone. Foster doesn't have the range LuPone has, that's for sure.

  • There are points in this I feel myself knocked back by her singing. I can't tell if it is good or bad though. But that doesn't hurt the fact that this was fantastic. Those points are just strange.

  • I'm sorry but Patti doesn't know how to pronounce her words...you can barely understand what she's singing. Also, Patti doesn't even take part in the long dance number...she just stands in the back and watches. Whereas, Sutton Foster actually dances in the entire number. Patti is a double-threat but she's NOT a triple-threat like Sutton Foster.

  • @FreedomFighter2112 i think patti is still a triple threat. acts, sings, and THOSE LEGS OH MY GOD.

  • I like how this is a half step higher than Sutton Foster's version of the son in the revival, because it shows off Patti's high ranges. Her diction is questionable though. She turned the witty lyrics into mush.

My theory, find some way to combine Sutton's diction with Patti's range and you have the PERFECT rendition of this song!

  • As I just said after watching Sutton Foster singing this song ..Patti Lupone does is BETTER in Every way ...I mean , DAMN ...Patti ROCKED that song !! Foster is good but she is NO Lupone ..xoxo

  • they nailed that..awesome

  • Patti and Sutton bring their own personality to Reno in both renditions. They are both beautiful, talented actress. They both did an amazing job as Reno.

  • Patti is definitely my favorite choice for Anything Goes hands down!

  • Why is it always sung by a woman at the tony awards when it was written for a male voice damn.

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargl okay, you obviously know nothing about broadway.......

  • At 2:29 Patti was so nervous that she yelled "OOOH GOOD" because she was so nervous, but her mic was still on. Fun fact. it's in her autobiography

  • @michsturg Interesting fact! Honestly, I assumed it was one of the male dancers who said that.

  • singing is awesome but the dancing i don't like because i'm not a dance fan

  • I personally prefer Cole Porter's version, this is a lil too fast for my taste lol

  • iik tht she's the original and all, but in my opinion NO ONE can beat sutton!!!!

  • the smile on Patti's face at the end of the song is marvelous! To haters out there (and i cant believe there are some), fine! if you dont like this video its fine but, just saying, the smile on her face made me loooove this video after disliking it. LOVE IT!!!

  • I LOVE this. I must have watched this 7 times in a row and it's 3:52am I have school and I still can't stop watching it!!! Patti is so amazing!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I adore this SO much more than Sutton's... sure Sutton is awesome but Patti's vibrato and timing and projection just makes this so much more satisfying for me to listen to. I really don't like the way Sutton holds the straight notes and her singing sounds too Broadway textbook and typical. This is so awesome <3

  • @SweetPoffin You're the first person I've come across who agrees with me about Sutton Foster's voice!

  • Monty Python's Flying Circuis <3

  • better then 2011's but still not as good as the one from fallout 3

  • The lyrics are different to Cole Porter's.

  • What a VOOICE

  • Love this performance. Not really warming to Sutton as Reno. I think she's a bit flat at times and a bit lacking in energy/passion. Sure, she can dance better than Lupone but I want someone who can hit those high notes every time, the dancing is (to me) incidental in a musical. I want a fabulous voice. Personally, I prefer Sally Ann Triplet from the 2003 London revival over Sutton.

  • @rocketdawg19 What is it with people and the "high notes?" It's terribly disparaging to me as a contralto.

  • I like Sutton more...just my opion, but shes a BUNCH better!!! :D

  • no she has a really bad voice

  • sung and danced very well, great tap routine (that is dancing isnt it?) sexyness is not a matter of costume but of gestures and looks...

  • Sorry, but like any critic, I have a lot of noteso n how this was done...

i know this was the 80's but why on Earth are the actors dressed like they are from the 80's? (i.e. why are there bikinis and why is Billy wearing an oversized suit?) I can't understand a word of what LuPone is singing due to the overbelting. She looks very old lady-ish, not sexy. She also does not by any means fit the role of Reno based on her cutesy actions during the song, and why does she not dance???

  • @Imajoy94 uhhh if you hate Patti LuPone so much then why did you watch this video?

  • @AngelorPhantom1359 I never said I hated Patti, I was just explaining why I didn't like the performance. And given that this is a free sight, I believe I can watch whatever I please and comment about the video however I want. I watched the video to simply see the differences in Sutton, Ethel, and Patti's performances, and I don't prefer Patti's. Sorry I upset you so much.

  • fallout 3 <3.... new vegas are $#!t

  • Great performance, as always. But can we blame her costume and hair on the 80s? She looks matronly and far from a sexy nightclub singer.

  • why is it the girls have a TON more showing than their hands n faces, and the guys have ONLY their hands and faces showing?

  • This. Is. Fucking. Awesome

  • I LOVE Cole Porter! I did this my senior year in high school, and it was THE BEST, MOST ENGAGING and just plain FUN musical to do!!!!!! Patti Lupone is BRILLIANT!!!! Sorry Sutton, you can have Thoroughly Modern Millie, but Reno Sweeney belongs to Merman and LuPone!!!! ;)

  • Absolutely wonderful.(: My college is doing Anything Goes in the spring. Me=excited as hell!

  • If Into the Woods didn't exist in the same year, Patti would've cakewalked her way to another Tony. She is amazing and makes this role her own. Something that's extremely hard to do in the face of the late, great Ethel Merman.

  • 1 million plus views. Work, Patti.

  • I just find Patti easier to watch compared to Sutton. Both are great, but i find this much more interesting than Sutton's rendition.

  • I think it's better than Cole Porter

  • it's good but not Cole Porter good

  • fact of life the original Broadway version is 100x better than any glee song!

  • I dont know why people get mad at people who listen to songs, like this, cause it was on Glee. SORRY that the wonderful world of broadway was never open to us, until Glee. Isnt it just a great thing that its getting a TON more recognition, the recognition it deserves? Lets all love music together. :]

  • @Kiya4ever

    Because glee is awful.

I didn't hear about this song on glee. I like musicals.

  • @Rowan07001484 I love musicals too, hence why I'm here, and Glee introduced me to some I didnt know about. Not all of us grow up watching every musical ever made.

  • Heck, took my mom to this at Lincoln Center. It's hard to describe Lupone's presence, but I suspect it's like Merman. She just RULES the stage.

PS Met her when bringing a room service order to her suite (hot tea, before performing). I asked for her autograph for my mother, and she was absolutely lovely, warm, and accessible.

  • Patti has serious enunciation issues and she's ugly, unlike Sutton Foster who has better diction and is prettier. The many Youtube videos of Anything Goes with Sutton prove how Sutton's much better is more legendary. Patti is a NOBODY next to Sutton! She's old and she should retire!

  • @bpark9thdmIA Look is an opinion. I happen to think Patti is beautiful! And ANYBODY can have good diction but many people, including Sutton, do not have the powerful voice that Patti has. You are obviously an immature and ignorant person. If you knew anything about musical theatre you would not have said that. Patti could out sing Sutton ANY DAY, even with being 62. Let's see if Sutton will still be around when she's 60.. doubt it.

  • @abb9211 "bpark9thdmIA" is the NOTORIOUS "walt1896," a deranged Sutton Foster fan who flags all comments on Sutton's videos that don't worship the woman (see the mess he's done recently on all Anything Goes videos with Sutton). He's mean to all other performers and he uses his 200+ accounts to dominate the comments page of each Sutton video.

  • @michellyeponiny Thanks for the info! Wow, crazy people actually do that. Kind of psychotic... or just someone who has entirely too much time on their hands. Probably both! =p

  • @abb9211 I think they are both equally talented...sutton is definately more comedic and maybe a little more talented dancing wise but patti could out sing her

  • @abb9211 youre calling someone else immature, but you are acting like your opinions are the be all end all. both performers are phenomenal. both have phenomenal voices. theres no point in acting like sutton foster isnt good because she REALLY is. so is patti.

  • @abb9211 So since you don't think Sutton will still be around when she's 60, she won't be, and therefore is worse than Patti? And diction when singing is actually really hard for a lot of people. And you're referring to someone as ignorant and immature because of their opinion? That's pretty narrow-minded. Both are great singers, and it's just a matter of opinion from there.

  • sutton is better.

  • sutton who?

  • PATTIE LUPONE!! YES.

  • fucking. love. patti lupone.

  • =] well now i have to see the whole thing

  • wowsers. i think this perfomance shows, in a brilliant way, you dont need flying witches, swearing mormons or 30 onstage deaths to make a brilliant musical!

(no offence intended, i love Wicked BoM [dear god please come to london!] and Les MIz)

  • LOVE YOU PATTI!!!!!

  • Thanks to glee I know this musical and watched it so many times.. You selfish elitists assholes can suck it up =3 :D THERES NO WAY YOU CAN KEEP THESE MUSICALS AWAY FROM PUBLIC AND MAKE EVERYONE SOONER OR LATER FORGET ABOUT IT!!! Idoits.

  • Very cool!

  • ok i first heard this in glee but now since i heard this on glee ive watched this whole musical 5 times (and now this is one of my favorite musicals) so if it wasnt for glee i wouldnt have even known about this

  • it is sad that people first heard this song on glee

  • Patti Lupone = Legend :)

  • 2:22.. holy mother of amazingess.

  • Sutton is a better dancer but Patti's singing is topnotch.

  • Did you guys know that Patti LuPone is a HUGE fan of glee? She was actually on a episode once!

  • wait. . . . when was this on glee? . . ew. I just saw an amazing performance of this show and I had no idea it was on glee. That makes me a little sad.

  • I'm sorry but she ruined this for me. Her voice just doesn't fit the part, and she doesn't even dance! Sutton does way better but that's just my opinion...

  • Were bras not invented in 1980?

  • who of you is here because the best game ever fallout 3 hell year

  • Fuck glee i heard this in fallout 3

  • WOW...I totally love Lupone's interpretation! I was not hugely in to this show but she really makes this song and owns it.

  • glee brought me here jajajajajajajaja!!!!

  • I know this may sound strange but this is very recent considering the original debuted in 1934 and personally I think they modernized it to much and ruined it.

  • Gotta love Patti :)

  • I like Sutton's vocals better for Reno Sweeney, but I hate her pants for this number. Therefore, I cannot choose between the two performances. xP

  • @christoffersenfam I can... silly pants or not, at least I can understand Sutton... sorry Patti, I just can't.

  • @aqua1993 I prefer the tap here by far. Sutton has better diction for sure but I prefer patti's voice. Sutton is is great, she did justice to the part and deserved her award. When I first head Sutton in this part I was unimpressed but it is growing on me.

  • @Tapey01 Gotta agree with you, the tapping is great and Patti's voice is better suited for this song. Maybe I can't choose after all... x.x

  • listening this in fallout 3 subways fuck yea

  • @Dalitogen0 fuck yeah!

lol love hearing this tune, or a few of the other good songs. like way back home :) and then you hear that feral ghoul cry out! , ill never forget that cry lol.

    then clakclakclak. boom! bloody mess!

  • PS: I never watch that crap Glee!! Never!

  • @BlackJackLanza you don't know what you're loosing...

  • ELLIOT GOULD brought me here! he sang this song on SNL many years ago. I always liked it,I like Cole Porter. Its so funny they made a movie re Porter with Cary Grant--not a mention of his being gay! NOTE:The line "plymouth Rock landed on them";it loks like dear old malcolm X stole that line from Porter! Figures he was a fan,he was gay too! ha ha ha !!!!!!!!

  • her voice, sutton's dancing tbh

  • is she using a mic?

  • I love this. I've got to admit, though I love both Sutton and Patti, like Patti's performance better. I'm not sure why, I just do.

  • Fall out 3 (game) and midnight in paris (movie 2011) brought me here

  • DEAR GOD I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN THIS.

  • Thumbs up if Cole Porter brought you here.

  • this is a great song period the lyrics are so funny and so true it hurts! the cast album with Patti and co. is the first one I heard of this brilliant musical and I recently saw it with Sutton and co. and loved it just as much...not better just different and just as wonderful

  • Damn ... nice vocals O.O

  • my tap class is doing this song for our concert!!

    I love Musicals! <3

  • My choir is putting this on.

  • Patti said in her book that the dancers were in their own little world and the energy was interesting. Thats where the OMG comment came from cause the energy was high. However the moves are flawless... My only comment is what that heck is patti saying. whatever she is singing its on pitch and full of energy. Sutton foster got the diction down. All I heard from patti was something about gigolos? Anything goes.

  • damn that red head is HOT!!!

  • fallout 3? Yes of course!

  • WTF HANDS 0:16 - 0:40

  • Comment removed

  • Waaaaay better then the 2011 one!! :D

  • nph brought me here. and glee is awesome its a show about promoting arts education and the importance of the arts in education. so gleeks, theatre lovers, no need for hate, we all want the same thing, more arts education and promotion of the importance of the arts. Art IS life. sports are great, but the arts promote a community drawn together by one common love, song, dance drama, art, film. this societ focuses too much on money and power. the arts focus on life, culture and freedom.

  • anyone here cuase of fallout?

  • Doing this in a theater! I love this song! Now for my criticism, no offense but the guy who played the reverend besides Reno (Patti) didn't know the words at all and really put me off! But I love this song none the less!

  • I'm also tired of seeing Glee bashing comments. Say what you will, but Glee has introduced a generation to Broadway. Also Patti Lupone said in interview that she likes Glee for this reason (which is why she happily guest star in one episode).

  • Great song but I don't quite like most versions only Cole Porter's version is good enough for me.

  • I'm not gay but when I listen to this song I have a gay time!

  • This is Three Dog bow wow wow

  • @EvilLordStan But I killed you... D:

  • itś ok some people don't like glee, i understand but glee it's introducing good songs from musicals that a lot of people never knew it about before glee! yes, Patti Lupone it's a gorgeus legend and the original version it's better, but glee's version it's not bad ! =)

  • @00AnneC when glee cover songs they do half as good as the original lol even on rebbecka blacks song friday

  • people who knew it before glee. aren't you supposed to be happy people know more about it? glee is about spreading the arts!

  • @mikaforsel glee just makes the songs worse in my opinion, i first heard this in gmod using an old radio mod. its amazing for apocalyptic machinimas.

  • love this song!!!!!

  • Dont read this because it actually works. You will get kissed by the nearest possible friday by the love of your life.Tommorow will be the best day of your life. However if yoy dont podt this at least three videos you will die within 2 days. Now you started reading so dont stop. This is so scary send this to five othet videos in 146 minutes when youre done press f6 and the love of your life will apear in big letters. This is so scary because actually works

    Uh Yes They Did!!!

    ;D

  • Aww I love this song I did it 3 years ago with my friends and we did like horrible haha nothing compared to Patti or Sutton!

  • This is an amazing song the tap number is amazing!

  • is it just me or is there one dancer who is working the hell out of her tap shoes a little more than every1 else lol

  • Thumbs up if you got this song from fallout 3!

  • Thumbs up If Glee Brought You Here!!!

    :D!!!

  • @JohnDLovesLeona They sang it on Gle??

  • is she really tap dancing in heels?

  • I know i'm gonna sound like another of those annoying pain in the arse people who are go on videos saying LIKE THIS LIKE THAT THIS REMINDS ME OF THIS AND THAT but seriously the only reason i know this song is because of games like Fall out New Vegas and its because of the fall out series that i found my love for music like this ;)

  • @lwvp This wasn't in new Vegas. It was in fallout 3.

  • Shit Am I the only one who knew this after glee!?

  • People: Everyone discovered this song because a person or another outlet exposed them to it. Just enjoy :)

  • @adorablebelle Yeah but can you imagine the sheer VOLUME of people who never had a clue what the fuck culture even WAS before fallout? The theoretical end of the world is helping us to appreciate the unended world.

  • Thumbs up if you don't care who sang the song. You. Just. Like. It.
