As soon as stocks, bonds, and commodities, etc.. stop trading within hundredths of a cent we will always have the all mighty penny! Wall street alone is keeping the penny alive. It's a waste, yes. Especially when you think of the rising copper values. Right now the copper in pre-1982 pennies are worth nearly triple their face value. Yes, $1,000 in pre 1982 pennies is worth nearly $3,000. LOL and it will only go up once the housing market goes up. Weird times we live in! ps make the dog talk!

The real problem with this otherwise stupendous idea is that in doing away with the penny that the nickel becomes the new smallest denomination. Gas then can no longer go up by just one cent, but rather it must increase in price by 5 cents each time those bastards raise the price!

Wrong. You are thinking on simplistic terms. Making the smallest denomination of currency 0.05 does not mean that the currency can only increment by 0.05.
Princes stay as they are, but any cash transactions are rounded up or down to the nearest 5c. If the customer is paying by card or cheque they pay the exact amount.
This is the way it works in many other countries.
