  • Did you honestly do this on a fleece blanket...how dumb are you. Static electricity is your enemy.

  • Please locate and remove USB 2.0 card, and replace with, if available, USB 3.0 card. Thanks.

  • i did that to change my hard drive lmao

  • Thanks for your 2 part videos... I just upgraded the hard drive on my 2005 iMacG5_iSight 20". A little different than the one you should, but a lot closer to any of the other how to's I found... THANKS!!

  • Thats what I can't stand about Macs. They use non-upgradable, laptop hardware, just so they can make their computers smaller.

  • what is the tool your using? I have the torx tip but all my screwdrivers are too thick in diameter to fit in the side of the imac ( to unscrew the torx screws for the monitor) Please Help!!!

  • Where do you learn all this stuff?

  • LOL Microsoft ad at the beginning

  • 3:54 unscrewing ninja alert :O

  • you want to ground yourself to the computer, not the earth

  • lmao a microsoft add on all most all the mac smashing vid </3

  • I have a iMac6,1 and I just want to open it up. What is up with all that foil???

  • @ega0117 I believe it's meant to stop magnetic interference.

  • nice video, was very useful for me and saved me money. keep it real bro.

  • Hey. Thanks for the video. Please add the iMac model to the video description, as the models differ internally.

  • ...

  • He is creeping me out

  • CARA E LOCO MI PANA

  • im a guy and im NOT gay, but you are the cutest thing ive ever seen. i just wanna hug you. CAN I HUG YOU NAO PLZ!?!?!?! :3

  • Watch out for those metal fingers! I actually cut my thumb open on one of those during a repair today.

  • Trying to do this at home but what do you mean "disconnect the op inside metal fingers"? Can you post a link to another video that does this?

  • thanx dude... i was wondering if you was english or american too lol

  • G'Day from Australia, great video, helped me a lot, only thing is I knocked a cable free and now my wifi drops in and out, I think I connected one back in the right place which gave me 1-2 bars, but it still drops in and out. Do you reckon you could give me a hand? Cheers dude!

  • I just replaced the HDD in my imac, working great. But now I have no sound. Nothing at all, nothing on startup or through the headphone jack. Any idea what I might have done? Thanks

  • @charlesworthd open it back up and look for any loose wires

  • hi,elliott do you know how to activate the windows 7 in imac?????i asked maybe you know????thanks very much

  • Great video but for everyone watching please make note that you need to disconnect the top inside metal fingers. You don't just pull up on the front panel, you risk breaking something. I went to post a video on how to do this but would not allow me to do so.

  • @twistedmacVIDEO That's a very good point! I forgot to mention that originally, but yes, you do need to disconnect the fingers.

  • @ElliottMediaGroup I seen a number of videos doing this so I showed it here ..... replace the youtube url in front of this (/watch?v=FN3N_qxLlWk)

  • @twistedmacVIDEO Cool. thanks!

  • @twistedmacVIDEO

not even close. This kid takes it apart and shows all steps, the above link you mention shows nothing.

  • @healingtv ??? The comment was made that your not suposed to pull back on the front panel. He does a great job showing the steps but was just mentioning that your not suposed to pull back on the panel. Just because other videos showing pulling it off without properly pushing the metal fingers doesn't make it right. As for my video what do you mean it shows nothing .... did you even watch it???

  • wow! thats an old mac

  • you are ugly

  • why does everybody introduce themselves and ad disclaimers? has anyone EVER been sued for some idiot fucking up their computer?

  • Macs shouldn't be this hard to access, and you shouldn't need a torx screwhead...thanks though, Elliot. That helped.

  • Damn i wish they made the new imacs this easy to change HDs Ram

  • you are a legend.

  • you have a strange british-american accent...lol

  • he's british, trying to sound american.

  • Clearly

  • Thank you ,HD replacement was a easy I followed your instruction video. The only problem I encountered is the dvd burner does not eject the inserted cd properly ,had to remove the iMac cover in order to eject the cd.

I need assistance on how to fix this little problem.

  • Thank you, Elliot. I was referred to your youtube explanation on opening the imac case for replacement of the hard drive by someone else. I am very grateful. I've replaced hard drives on PC's but the imac is new to me. My hard drive crashed after 2+ years and the local Apple store declined my repair request. I was willing to spend almost $400 for a repair, I will now try myself. If I fail, no worries, it was a big dead box before I even started. Your information is priceless. Thank U!

  • awesome video...now i know what the inside of these sexy computers look like.. haha

and obviously he used voice over since there was a segment of him fast forwarding and he was still talking.... his voice wouldn't sound normal if he didnt voice over.....

  • is this a 17" iMac or a 20" iMac?

  • It shouldn't matter, but I think it's a 17".

  • This is an excellent video! - I am often suprised how C**P some tutition vids are... this one is clear and effective - Nice one!! :)

  • Your lisp is awesome

  • Wow ya. This was like a while back...haha.

  • were you using voiceover? it sounded like it lol

  • Yup I voiceovered the video as I was cutting and speeding it up to fit the 10min video limit.

  • Make up your mind!!!! What are you? British or American?

  • are u american or british????? Im hearing both there....

  • Hurrahh! finally got those evil screws to budge and installed new drive - had to bend the white plastic panel to get at the screw that holds the hard drive! I just used superglue to stick heat sensor thing....anyway - thankyou - it is behaving like a brand new computer now except for some weird fart noises....

  • thanks for the great guide! popped in a 320gb in mine after the original hdd started giving me problems. the only trouble i had was screwing the lcd back on. the screws kept falling out of place and into the board. argh!

  • Wah !! Looks so easy !! Just ripped half my finger off trying to get the screws out - one still wont budge and there is blood all over the mac - am on the verge of taking a hammer to the fucker!!! gggrrrr....

  • Hey Elliott, just tell me, where the hell have gone two power wires attached to lcd panel? Your 45 degree lcd panel turn can turn into pain in the ass if you dont detach two power cables before. No, really, you just forgot to connect them when imac was taken apart day before? You have ever tried to boot your mac after? Aren't you bored with your black screen.

Be ware people, this isn't right instruction to follow.

  • You are very right. I freaked out when the screen didn't turn on. A quick reopen and reconnection fixed the prob. Sorry for the confusion.

  • what size torx screwdriver is used?

  • thanks Buddy for the nice video..Always wanted to know how to do this even though I dont own one, But I am in the IT industry..This shud be helpful

  • these rather ugly scare me

  • Thanks Elliot, very useful.

  • Great video thanks!

  • Nice job. Thank you very much. This was extremely useful info for saving one of our professors' machines at UC Berkeley,

    EECS dept.

    -Fil

  • Thanks for the guide Elliot.Very useful upgrading the hard drive in my Late 2006 20" iMac.

There are a few differences I discovered and thought I should share.

    1. There are two metal clips at the top of the case.

    2. There is a ribbon connector down the middle of the monitor - be careful with this. In fact unscrew the connector from the logic board - I lost video and had to take out the screen and reseat it.

    3. Hard drive is connected by a metal plate and two posts in the hard drive itself.

  • lol, my imac wont turn on now after I changed the HDD. Why can't I have a normal problem like the clips being loose, or isight acting up. oh well, it was a risk I had to take, there are no apple stores around and I have no warranty

  • All I can say is to check all connections, sorry i'm not much help!

  • I fixed it now, I plugged it into another outlet, and also removed/replaced the RAM, then it started up.

  • yup this was the problem, i played with the ram and i didn't put it back in properly, and the computer wouldn't turn on

  • he maybe candian they always switch accents

  • No, we kinda' don't... =P. I don't really hear an accent... I don't think we have any.

  • Whats up with you accent?

  • I used that blue liquid to clean glasses to clean my screen and it leaked to the back of the white shell, this will help me a lot. thanks.

  • it's safe to skip past the first minute

  • Wow, thanks, saved 1 minute of my life.

  • u remind me of mclovin in superbad.....

    in a good way!!!

  • McLovin!

  • my cam stop working what do u think it could be?

  • I'm not sure, sorry!

  • That foil, that you tore, that's you warranty.

  • thanks for the guide, i have been looking for something like this. i am in desperate need of taking my imac g5 apart, so i can dust it. this video is perfect.

might i ask for you to state the model you are working on in your description?

    thanks

  • Hi there, it is a late 2006 iMac with iSight camera. Hope that helps!

  • dude, your balling. btw nandoj4...watever the $%@& your name is..grounding and anti-static isn't that big a deal anymore. avn't screwed anything up yet, and been in the computer repair industry for quite some time now

  • While that's also true for me but I'd better off be safe than sorry personally. I always ground myself before touching electrical componants, But as I said even when I haven't nothings broken on me yet.

  • This guy really knows what he's talking about. Good video bro. 5 *****

  • you sound like you have an accent (possibly british). is that correct?

  • Yup- you got it :-)

  • lever huh? are you trying to sound American? isn't it leever? or is that old English? hehe

  • nice video

  • yesssss! i just replaced my hard drive!!!! you're the only person on the whole goddam internet that helped me at all!!! fuck yeah! listen to this little creep, he knows his shit!!! thank you!

  • Hi

How did you get the monitor screws out.

    Thanks

  • its just like when you play the game 'Operation'. you gotta get into it, steady those hands. if theres any tape or anything preventing the screws from coming out, move it out of the way. you need a magnetic torx screwdriver small enough to get in there, and keep your wits about you. C'mon Now!

  • you've probably figured it out now, but they don't come out... they just unlock the bezel so it can be lifted off.

  • is the lcd monitor is the cpu itself?!!

  • The monitor and computer are all contained in one piece of hardware. There is no "tower" like other computers.

  • OK first learn about ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) before you start talking about grounding yourself anywhere you touch your iMac. How the hell can you ground yourself to earth ground when you have the iMac not seating on a electrostatic mat and dont have the electrostatic mat grounded. Also you can still damage your Memory sticks when you touch the chips and not just the end tips. Other than that you have a good video. Next time do your home work about (Electrostatic Discharge)....ESD....;-)

  • Hello Elliot,

Thanks for the video. I have trouble removing the monitor screws. After unscrewing the monitor screws I have trouble taking them out inspite of using a screwdriver with a magnetic tip. In your video the screws, after unscrewing seem to come off nicely with the screw driver. If it is the screw driver can you mail me the brand of the torx screw driver you are using.

    Thanks

  • I just picked up the screwdriver kit at radioshack. They can be pretty tricky to remove even with the right driver. Sorry!

  • the imac should lay on the screen... -.-

  • you should get a 20 inch instead of a 17, it helps soo much

  • Elliot, idea for New Video: How to set up the Vuze (azureus) bit-torrent client for max speed & simplicity, using the advanced configuration, step by step. I used the classic interface on mine before I lost my hd. Don't remember which version it was, but it was simple, fast & elegant. Latest version is cluttered & junky & won't accept the SafePeer plugin anymore. Maybe you'd have ideas about the best version to download, as well as desirable plugins.

Thanks for all your killer vids!

  • Thanks to your excellent video I was able to drop 500 gigs of Western Digital hard drive into my imac intel (my old 160 hd having totally crapped out a month ago). Hovering below the poverty level, as I do, I was delighted to do the whole thing for about $75 instead of the $400+ it would have cost if I'd gone to a pro. Oh yeah, add $5 for the torx screwdriver...

    Thanks thanks thanks!

  • Because of your video I have enough confidence to install it myself. I placed an order with Club Mac for a Seagate 7200-11 oem. But they lost my order! arggggghhhh So now I'm having second thoughts. Maybe I should order a Western Digital. I liked the 32 buffer on the Seagate and also I think you said you installed one. So have you had any problems with the Seagate? I plan on getting the 500GB.

    Thanks for making this video!!!

  • Great video. Thank you for doing these.

  • great vid ;)

  • you think i could buy a face plate thing so i can mod my duel screen for my imac to look identical!!!

  • i dont want to get sued :(

  • Gr8 video man, very professional and I succcesfully changed my HD following this vid and part 2! cheers

PS are u British or American? Ur accent seems to have a bit of both lol

  • I have a question regarding the hard drive heat sensor.. Do I have to stick with some kind of glue on the new drive.. or it's just hold between the drive and some other part of the iMac? If I need glue where would I find what I need to stick the sensor back to the new drive. Thanks in advance

  • Hi there. I am not completely sure what holds it on, but I looked a Billmister's Intel iMac HD Install video, and he says it is held on with some sort of rubber cement, and then suggests that as a substance to use. I am not entirely sure though. Sorry!

  • I found if I tk it off keeping as much glue on the sensor as I can, it will still stick to ur new HD if u press hard and hold it there, I can see the temp on the new HD via istatpro no prb

  • Cool! Thanks for the tip!

  • I wander what is the model of iMac he is disablemblying?

  • that could be either a g4 a g5 or a white intel iMac

  • It can't be a G4 since they were not made in this shape and it isn't a G5 since the back panel is removable on those and the HD is listed as user serviceable by Apple.

It is an Intel iMac early 2006.

  • it's actually, A late 2006 model the intel core 2 duo, Before the new core 2 duos came out...i have this model in a 4gb ram and 1tb of hd space...

  • why does the top seem to be locked down i cant get my off?

  • There are these little clips on the top on the inside that you have to sort of pull out to lift the top up. Also, this only works on the white Intel iMac, so if you have a new aluminum one, it is different.

  • friend of mine uses an old ice cube tray for his screws during disassembly - isn't that brilliant? Nice work Elliott - I especially like where you speed it up during the unscrewing!

  • Excellent video! The DIY videos helped me while upgrading a laptop. I have a new iMac and this gives me a lot of insight on what I may need to do if I decide to upgrade the harddrive. Thanks!

  • Glad i could help!

  • the new Aluminium iMacs are different as they dont have the screws like the white iMacs. Theres only 1 screw at the bottom and that gives access to the RAM slot so any ideas?

    - Tom

  • Very nice video. It's always cool to see the inside of an Apple machine. Is there any particular reason you took apart your computer?

  • Mainly because I want to replace my hard drive with a larger one at some time. It seems like a pretty easy process, all i need is the cash lol.

  • real cool video elliot i really enjoyed it btw sorry i havent done the 5 facts video yet ive been busy with school but i get out next week so it is coming i just need to take care of exames coming up so it will be up soon

    thx, manny

  • No worries bud, it's all good

  • i have the same srew driver
