Hailing from West Virginai, i can remember driving up creeks myself just to get to my grandparents home. God i miss those old days listing to my pappy and his friends playin' bluegrass. I miss that high lonesome sound
so explain to me agian why Lady GAGA is a multi millionaire and this guy is broke and living in a shack?? (not that he would want anything more though) . the world is fucked
@crabtrap damn well said. shame the public will fork over good money for mass produced BS when such as this exists... RIP Roscoe and thanks for the music
Keltyk a tres bien parlé de cette musique ... je n'ajouterais rien sinon que la musique de R.Holcomb se ressent bien plus qu'elle ne s'ecoute ... elle me touche particulierement le coeur et l'ame ...
Exceptionnel
(look for 'man of constant sorrow de R.Holcomb too ... amazing)
Sometimes I hear a piece of music that brings a lump to my throat and puts a tear to my eye- the first tune did that instantly- POW!!! when that happens, i trust it's my heart telling me i'm hearing something utterly amazing and 100% authentic- Wish they hadn't stuck the commentary over that part though- greetings from over in scotland- guess the celtic roots still reach the celtic heart in this wonderful music
I knew Rossie, we never called him Roscoe, when I lived at Daisy. I remember watching him play at his home and community get togethers. The last time I remember seeing him was at his home where he played and sang with his relative Nell Newsome. Wow that was long ago but feels just like yesterday.
Wow, I haven't seen color footage of him before. He's definitely one of my favorite singers of all time, maybe he is my favorite. Also, this footage provides a good view of his right hand technique. I'm trying to learn to play some things like him on guitar and I never would have figured out what that hand is doing. It seems he only uses his thumb and index finger. Now I need to figure out if he's hitting the strings with his finger nail or plucking them with his index. Maybe both.
I suppose, since he's a banjo player also, it's just a banjo technique - playing with two fingers. So maybe you should check how to play "clawhammer banjo"?
two finger old time banjo playing is a different technique from clawhammer. Anyone wanting a great example of two finger style banjo playing (I mean besides roscoe) can look ffor stuff by Will Keys
Mike Seeger has a "How To" DVD about mountain banjo techniques. To play like Roscoe, you should learn the "thumb lead" 2-finger style. Although he does play clawhammer on some tunes.
well it's not clawhammer, Roscoe plays a few different styles, but one is a "two-finger" style where he leads with his thumb. then i've also heard the index lead.
on faster songs like "little birdie", he does an up-picking (with index) and a downward brush like in clawhammer playing, but the melody note is picked upward.
nah, he's got fingerpicks, he's doing (at least my guess is ) is doing something similar to a "carter family" scratch. It's similar to clawhammer, but with finger picks crossed with some old mountainy techniques.
@Gheti old school players play their instruments in strange ways (jimi hendrix re-strung his guitar as apposed to getting a left handed one) - just adds to their story really :) - i'd play the way that is most comfortable for you
what movie is this from?

Is he picking with his thumb on Guitar and playing a rhythm with index? I think he's better than even momma Maybelle....

Fantastic, this is purely American music. R. Holcomb was brilliant, wish there was a full length film about him.

@alexl32 He's not playing clawhammer banjo. He's doing two-finger picking.
CanastaNasty 8 months ago
@alexl32 Actually, he's playing two-finger thumb lead or up-picking banjo, kind of like Scruggs style if you're missing a finger.

He often tuned his guitar similar to a banjo. I suppose he could play things the same on guitar or banjo.
