I think sanshou is one of the best arts to start with before mma. If Americans have wrestling, Japanese and brazilians have judo and jujitsu, Russians have sambo...I think these guys also have something to share..Cung le is now a great result of this art...this art has great takedowns without the gi...I've been thrown by these guys...I've been in judo for 4 years now but never been so humiliated when they took me down...I salute the art of Asians....really great...

I know the guy in black in this video. His name is Rene Catalan. he is a 4 time world champion in Sanshou competition. and is also a gold medalist in the SEA Games and Asian Games. And is also a former amateur boxer and muay thai fighter.

he weighs only 48-52kgs. which is around 112-116 pounds. The man can punch and has knocked out a lot of fighters in his weight division.

He is small but his skill level is more so than any mma fighter i've seen. atleast for striking and wrestling.

Something to consider....

Yes in a one on one fight grappling more times then not is more efficient then stand up fighting. But fighting on the street one would be "lucky" to only have "one" attacker. Think about it two guys attack you. You hit the ground and grapple while the second guy stomps on your head.....

But speaking of just Sanshou, its an awesome style very practical. Good performance from both men!

On of the unexpected conclusions was that 90% of the fights become ground-related after approx. 10 seconds.

But when standing I prefer Sanda or Muay Thai.

You could also opt for wrestling (not the stuff you saw Hulk Hogan do). Wrestling and Judo are pretty similar and very applicable in most self-defense situations. Things like boxing and muay thai are good fighting arts but I'm talking "self-defense". In most of the US I believe if you start punching or kicking back you'll go to jail too for assault. Even if you were "defending" yourself. Whereas if you just throw and wrestle the person there's minimal injury and less likely to go to jail.
