@ReductioAdAbsurdum1 Thanks dude! I mainly do combinations of parradiddle, double strokes and single strokes for the hands. Another great exercise is to play very slow double strokes with your hands moving around the kit. Like the first stroke on floor tom, second on snare, third on hihat, fourth on snare again. If it works well you can play it more fast. Gives you alot of control.
For the feet I also play parradiddles and simple 16th and triple grooves.
great drummin guy.suprised not to see neil peart in your list of favorite drummers tho.hes gotta be one of the best ever in my personal opinion.niceone tho
Cheers! Yeah - that makes sense. How do you count it? I've tries 12 bars of 3/16 then one bar of 4/8 - that kind of works but it still hurts your head! :-)
@maclellan100 yeah... to count 16th notes in this song really hurts :D I just dont count anymore. I listened to that song like a thousand times, its totally in my head ;)
@maclellan100 thanks a lot! that took me some time too: to make it easier, think about the wohle thing, which is actually in 22/8. right between the "11" and the "12" is a "cut" (that is, where the second bar starts, its the "11 and"). now you just have to think of 16th notes: 10,5 8th notes equate to 21 16th notes (thats the first bar). 11,5 8th notes equate to 23 16th notes.
so these are two bars: one of 21/16th and one 23/16th ;) i hope you understand it, its pretty hard to explain. ..
This was fantastic! I love how clean your rolls and fills are, it's amazing! Just one thing, you may want to change the beaters/tuning for your bass drum, or your miking/mixing. Sounds very "fluffy" and very low in the mix to me.
I just made myself look like a fool. Damnit! How long have you been playing man? If you say that's in the video description. I'll shoot you, at point blank range :P
I've played the drums since I was seven. I had five years of lessons, but then it lost it's appeal to me so I quit them. I got a new drumset in November 2007 and began and went on with it. But my skills where almost completely down at that point.
Haha yes, rudiment practice is mandatory!. I see you have mics up there, which ones are you using ? Also which coated heads do you use ? The sound is fat and nice unlike em ringy pissy off toms. I also see a corporate clutch there in the hi - hat. Now that i'm looking more at your setup. Its pretty cool :D
my SD heads are: Evans Power Center (top), Evans Hazy 300 (bottom). the bottom head is tuned clearly higher then the top head. but dont forget, i miced the drums! that has a giant influence on the sound.
Brown Bear. The clarity you've played with is amazing. Love the tuning of the kit overall, sounds brilliant :) I see the Xs20 cymbals but would want to know if they're medium thin or rock. Also, what do you practice your ghost notes on? Your left hand looks very practiced. Keep giving more videos man :D
i actuatlly have one sabian xs 20 medium ride. the rest are other ones (take a look in the video description). i cant really tell you, what made my ghost notes worked like that/practiced my left hand. i used to do a lot of paradiddle/double stroke-rudiment stuff. appart from that i PRACTICED THAT SONG A FUCKING LOT!
a very good method to practice your left hand is to play easy things, which you played also with your right hand when you started to play drums ;)
@SauloASFS I really like it. It has a nice compromise between a steel and a wood snare or something. Very nice metallic bang, but also a lot of warmth. Maybe this is the special thing about a copper snare, anyway, this one has it ;) Go test it out!
@Zildjian232 thank you! its nice to get a compliment for something you worked the last 1, 1 1/2 years on - which was to get a cleaner, smoother playing ;)
Auf dieses Video antworten...nope, the most of the "good" sound is because i miced the drums. its unbelievable how they improve the sound. the editing is relevant too, but just a little bit imo...
@BrownBear96 oh, i see. thanks for letting me know :P but i still think you are amazing at drumming, i really do enjoy watching your videos. you inspire me
I have a question, it may sound very very stupid, but after I watched this I wanted to play the drums too, but where do you learn this? all by yourself? or do you take drum lessons?, please respond D:
...wow, this proves that Gavin Harrison is human! You´re great man. I really enjoy this, is like being sides Harrison at studio. You are a hero.

@JMartinsATV actually not. why?

@BrownBear96 Yeah, after watching the whole video I realized it shouldn't be. It's that shadow over the hi-hat bell that threw me off.
Congratulations on the cover though! I could just about feel the song was yours, and that is saying a lot for a Porcupine Tree cover
