It is strange to say that Prophet does not know how to read or recite at the same time he being part of aristocratic family. This is a propaganda of so called traditionist who were paid by enemies of Islam Bano Ummayya and Bani Abbas. These so called four imams screwed up the real religion of islam by creating confusion and ignoring the real lslam which is being kept alive by progeny of prophet meaning Ahlulbait. Only way to get to truth is to follow Ali after Mohammad.

I thought the meaning of the letters at the beginning of some suras is unknown.
Yet Hamza Yusuf claims that they describe the bell Muhammed heard before the revelation. Is this accepted by other Islamic scholars?

Jeremias1111, I think you misunderestood him. He never made that claim. He was describing the sound of those unknown letters, not the meaning. Neither was he associating the letters with the sound of the bell.
