  • He didn't want to eat. Why are you doing this? There's nothing wrong with this kid. You're doing nothing but frustrating your child.

And, Autism or not, I'd gag on that food too.

  • Stop forcing that poor child!I dont see autism here i see a mother who doesnt know when to stop.ur clearly trying to force him over n over to talk in that loud voice n a non helpful or encouraging way,n ur clearly forcing him to eat.its not behavioral.he cant help gagging.there was a mother thrown in prison for force feeding the child the same way.the child died of severe pneumonia due to food in the lungs.not saying it would go to that extreme here but hes clearly coughing when ur forcing him.

  • I'm pleased to hear Ely's doing well. God bless & best wishes to you all.

  • ohh he likes the turkey and rice! handsome little man he is god love him! he reminds me soooo soo much of my son it gets frustrating with the no speech thing but over time the grunts and hand movements are just as strong as words. autistic children are smart just in a special way! <3

  • BTW texture and color may be an issue so if u r gonna change make sure the two differnt foods are similar as possble.

  • My son is similar. he likes playing with strap clips, he's very strict with what he eats and he gags a lot - often he is 'pretent gagging' and overeacting.

ONe tip for changing his food - with my son he will like dish (A), but we want him to start eating dish (B) .... we change it very slowly ... 10% at a time. it will go like this: 100% (A), then 90% (A) + 10% (B) then next day; then 80% (A) + 20 % (B) ... sometimes its one step forwards two step back , but eventually he changes.

  • I cant believe you are telling him "no no" when he gags... you do understand he cant help it, @@

  • I commend you for the strength you have, but you thinking that his gagging is based on bad behavior is really terrible. When you eat something you hate, don't you gag too? Gag reflex is from eating something the body doesn't agree with. Then you force him to eat, which really isn't helping his situation. You're a bit hard on him, I feel bad for him, he already suffers enough.

  • STOP FORCING HIM TO EAT!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

  • Thanks so much for sharing. My son is 21 months old and has just been diagnoised with autism.

  • He can't help that he's gagging. why are you telling him "no no" ?

  • First of all I wanna tell you, you have a beautiful kid!. On the other hand, I'm sure parents with autistic kids would apreciate this video. It's really encouranging! because it's not easy making your kid eat someting he crearly doesn't want to eat. Thanks for sharing your experience. I read in one of your comments he's doing great now, I hope he continues improving. greetings from Argentina.

  • Ely just celebrated his 4th birthday and is now eating some table foods he even ate a few bites of his birthday cake. He is still very small for his age but his other skills have shown great development and improvement. He is currently in school and the intent is to main stream him in regular classes at kindergarten. To all parents with Autistic children there is hope be your child's advocate and most of all do not take no from anyone for an answer fight for your child.

  • @mommy2ely what is wrong with you stupid bitch you don't gag a baby and i have an 18 month old with autism your just a child abuser or you just don't care for your child dum dum bitch.

  • @mommy2ely He sure doesn't look small for his age in the video taken at 18 months.

  • I am so right there with you my Son did this for months, its a very hard thing to go through you battle everyday to get them to eat and it wares on you and you worrie if you are doing the right things, I am happy to hear it has gotten easier not only for him but for you, God bless!

  • My little one has tons of food aversions he is 1% of children that will starve himself he is now 7 and is eating so much more. I did find out that he also had H.Pylori which causes peptic ulcers and is virtually undetectable until they vomit all the time. It doesn't hurt to ask your pediatrician about it.I found out thats what caused his food aversion. Painful ulcers. ps he is still aspie and has tantrums not as bad it has gotten better.

  • i have aspergers but growing up they did not know about aspergers so i was left to my own when it came to eating and i learn on my own what texures i liked what ones i did not like and it was hard as a child gagging when you knew all the other kids your age would not be doing that but i am doing fine now but still have my food issues

  • He's so much like my daughter! She is 2.5 now and basically lives off of fruit and breads. Any meat and veggies is a struggle. She was diagnosed with autism at around 1.5 yo and still seems like a typical kid on the spectrum. The good news is that she's always progressing and learning. We're not too worried about her. I have a brother with Aspergers who is really successful in school and life. :)

  • my daughter does this when she wants to feed herself.

  • try the turkey but put a fruit smell under noise like a bit of pear as smell of turkey may not be what he likes due to his smelling ability..ie cant stand the smell...jeff...48 an an aspie quilfide in child care................

  • just curious is there a reason he's still eating baby food at 18 months old?

  • this is not the childs autism he dont like the food you are feeding him have you ever tasted that junk and at 18 months he should be eating table food I too would be angry if I were asked the same question 30 times in 3 minutes thats just aggitation

  • My 6 year old son has Aspergers syndrome and was always a good eater- however, my 4 year old has "autistic traits" with no formal diagnosis and to this day most meals go this way with him refusing most foods unless I can get him hungry enough to accept something that I know he likes- I feel for you- it can make mealtimes stressful for the whole family- glad to hear he is doing a bit better now.

  • i witsh there was some way for you to communicate with him at this stage of his life

  • Hello Mummy2ely, You have a vey cute son. I am happy for what you said about the improvement of your kid, my kid is not autistic but he start talking at 3 years old.

  • Wow, that meal would be considered a huge huge success for my 13 month old daughter! To even get a bite of food near her mouth is an effort. She may eat a few crackers or bits of fruit while she is playing or walking around, but to eat in her highchair is a huge struggle and usually ends up with 90% of the food thrown or spit across the room and her screaming nonstop. She does say a few words, mostly animal sounds, but she did say mama for the first time today!!!

  • Why do you keep saying "no no" when he coughs?

  • My daughter was EXACTLY like this at his age and didn't speak till she was a little over 2 years of age. She is now 10 and is a normal child...your child may very well have autism, but not all children that act this way do. Thanks.

  • I'm watching videos on autism because I think the 19 month old baby boy I nanny is autistic but the parents refuse to have him screened because they're afraid of the diagnosis... He acts just like your child, but your little boy seems to be way more mature than him.... The baby I watch acts like a 12 month old.. BTW, he just started walking a month and a half ago, and his vocabulary only has 5 words that he repeats over and over, sometimes he'll say a word over 10 times in a row.

  • i just discover that my son have autism,he is 2 and 7 month, just tal lets go out,and what is this and maybe a 5 or 6 things.and when we walk wher is cars prc in line he show every car and say this is car!!! sory 4 my eanglish im ayoung parent and im little worry what i must doo ? i didnt sleep all night im worrry

  • I'm 17, and I have a small sheet of paper on the refrigerator of every meal I will eat. There are five foods that I will eat that we regularly have at my house. I don't think it's a big deal.

  • My oldest daughter was diagnosed this March with Autism. She was the same way!! She only wanted crunchy foods, and still prefers them to any other foods. Our hardest thing right now is the passy, and getting her teeth brushed. It's nice to know we aren't alone. ;)

  • My son only eats dry foods usually. Cereal, crackers, pretzels, granola bars, cookies. His OT and I have been working with him and now he will eat yogurt on occasion. Both my children (my autistic son and neuro-typical daughter) have horrible gag reflexes and will typically vomit after gagging. Never a dull moment. :)

  • To anyone that has viewed my sons video. I appreciate your positive words of encouragement. The good news is since this time he is now 2 1/2 years old and self feeding he still has the aversion to textures but has come along way he has a huge vocabulary he has been reevaluated and is now mild on the spectrum. Thank you god for this.

  • My son (35 mos.) was just diagnosed last week w/autism, haveing an average score on an IQ test. My biggest challenge is his eating - he will only eat hard, crunchy food - NOTHING can be soft, wet, slimy, pureed, etc. He would gag, choke, vomit, etc. when we would put the food into his mouth to at least get him to try it. He has textural issues too. He gets SO upset if we try to get him to eat anything soft....how did you get him to keep the food in his mouth?

  • When my son (diagnosed with autism) was this age we always sang songs to him at dinner and would pause so that he would take another bite. He liked our singing enough to eat to get more (usually)! He still doesn't eat much variety on his own, but things are much better......hopefully for you too!

  • My DD did this exact same thing when she was introduced to foods...gagging...vomiting... Some is behavioral but mostly it may have to do with the texture of the food. I found that my dd is so sensitive to many textures and sensory information. This was the exact same things we went through. The eating is getting better for us...how is Eli doing with it?
