I'd say all of you people need to enroll in some remedial English. I love Brooks, but I wonder where is Nettles in all of this hoopla? I mean look at that 1978 WS game, with Guidry pitching and Nettles diving left and right. And I mean diving...I mean full extension, body in the air and landing on his ribs. Speaking of which, where are the Freddy Lynn highlights? And these are just a bunch of stills. That's a tribute for someone in a lower league. It's not appropriate for Brooksie.
I'm a lifetime Phils fan, but I can't say who I like better, Schmidtty, or Brooks. I idolized Brooks as the best 'hot corner" man in baseball before Schmidt's career had even started. A lot of Phillies fans were very cool toward Schmidtty; his personality was quite reserved.
The unique thing about Brooks was his flabbergasting un-macho demeanor. Amazing how he was heads and shoulders above other 3rd basemen, but with no "strutting rooster" persona like today's players have.
Awesome clutch hitter,16 consecutive GOLD GLOVES, a respected team player and role model on and off the field. Best third baseman EVER!!!!!! Honorable mention to Schmidt and Brett.
When I was a young boy, I was a fan of the Cardinals in the NL and the Orioles in the AL. Both of my favorite players were all-star third basemen...Ken Boyer in St.. Louis and Brooks Robinson in Baltimore. They were MVP's the same season - 1964. Nobody had a glove like Brooks....then, or today.
Best 3rd basemen ever? really? How can you be the best ever at any position and your batting average is well below 300, doesnt have 3000 hits nor even 300 homruns in 23 seasons!
Because baseball statistics can never calculate how many runs can be saved by great fielding, or potential big innings nipped in the bud. I would guesstimate that whatever slightly higher offense produced by a Brett or Schmidt would be offset several times over by how many runs Brooks at 3rd saved his pitchers.
@lilardobert13 I loved Brooks but yes it can be calculated (see Bill James ) and I would rather have Schmidt, Mathews Brett. Do you really think that a great fieldenr can save a run every 3 games. No. Who would you raher have at ss. Ozzie or Ripke?
@tatomuck18 and he has the greatest play in baseball so add that to the list ...the one he fields out of bounds that was fair and throws it to first in time
Best defensive Third Baseman of all time, but Schmidt, Brett, Home Run Baker were all CLEARLY more valuable players because their offensive contributions were light years better. There are a good 40 3rd basemen who were better offensive players. But I agree, defensively, he was phenomenal, an absolute wizard
I agree with that 110%. Here's something I think we can agree on. Brooks wrote the book on how to play 3rd base. I guess we can call that 3rd base 101. Wouldn't you agree that's a fair statement?
Look I'm a Die Hard Orioles fan who's waited 12 years for "Oriole Magic" to return as well as the "Oriole Way" & I have no objectivity here but its the truth Brooks Robinson is the Author on how to play 3rd Base & he could also hit to. He wasn't a Defensive Substitute, he was an all around player.
Best third baseman I've ever seen. As somebody once said, "He plays third base like he came down from a higher league." I went to his Hall of Fame induction in 1983 and had the pleasure to meet him. What a class act! Brooks is the best!
who was better, mike schmidt or robinson.I can't choose.Robinson was a better fielder but not by too much and schmidt hit better so I can't choose the best of them
When I was a boy, my favorite two players were 3rd basemen. My American League team was the Orioles and Brooks Robinson was my favorite. My National League team was the Cardinals, and Kenny Boyer was my favorite. They both won the MVP Award for their repective leagues the same year - 1964. Both, Robinson and Boyer were considered baseball's "nice guys." Great players. I've never seen a 3rd baseman as dominant as Brooks Robinson was during the 1970 World Series. Great memories.
That's great! I met Brooks twice.Once at the HOF and in York, PA when he got his Lifetime Gold Glove Award. What a wonderful ballplayer and more importantly a wonderful person! Great tribute!
Yes, you need to be an indie filmmaker to include some moving footage...or at least indicate that it's a bunch of stills.

@zped99 -fielding wise, no one else was close. But all around, I'd definitely go with Schmidt. 500+ home runs, and a golden glover himself
