Looks to be a large stepper motor with onboard controller, excellent power for the motor size. For a conversion system, this looks like an OK deal, provided the company backs their product. The "Red Flag" error in this ad is stating "No Friction", everything has friction, sometimes it is low.
Brushed motor/gear systems can provide more torque and speed, in addition to options, rather than a "one size fits all package". Hassle might be worth it though, from reading other comments.
Don't believe the hype. The system is over rated and BionX charge like a wounded bull. They aren't too keen on honouring their warranty either. You are tied to their dealers and the slightest problem will see you without your system for weeks, maybe months. Even a blown fuse will mean sending the unit back to Canada, they are so strict on their warranty conditions.
BionX are honoring their warranty with me but it took some pressure. Many of the problems I have had have been caused by the dealer who failed to provide crucial parts with the kit, like an axle nut & extender wire. That said, the system when running has proved a little wanting when it comes to big hills. Around town it is pretty good. I'll give you an update in a month. The kits is going to be checked over by BionX and then reinstalled. It might be different afterwards.
How much torque can you get out of it? Can you build a bigger more powerful motor with the same regenerative rechargeable capabilities and fit it to a rhoades car bike? that would be ideal.
You may want to look into 'crystalyte' . they have an assortment of motors for either torque or high speed or dual gear motors for switching between torque for hills and speed for straightaways . Kelly makes a regen controller . You can build a system stronger and cheaper than bionx with some 'know how'
I used to live ten miles from work and that was the perfect distance for commuting--an easy hour-and-five minutes direct or an hour-and-a-half if I took the scenic route. (From Arlington, VA, the direct route was over the Key Bridge and down M through Georgetown into the District; scenic was down to Memorial Bridge and along the Mall.) Now, I live twenty miles from work and that has been too far for me to ride with any regularity. However, I think Bionx will be change that soon :)
this is such a weird video. i'm sure there is a script..

With today's gas prices, this makes a lot of sense for people in warm weather and releatively short commutes.
