I remember being young and hearing this song along with many other NIN songs in the DOOM wad "DWANGO5". I also remember hunting for days trying to find out who made the song (DOOM uses MIDI, so no vocals), and I remember how awesome it was finally finding this song, then many other after it. One of my favorite artists ever hands down.
I like the original version more. couldn't tell you why, but I honesty do. And don't take me wrong, NIN along with Joy Division are my two most favorite bands.
" genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/lan/en/atlas.html " See where your deep ancestors were last.. after coming out of Africa over 60,00-0 years ago.
Im a huge NIN-Trent admirer. After hearing the 'original' version of Dead Souls by Joy Division, I have a few thoughts. First, This song is just WICKED! the lyrics speak for themselves. It is a dark and haunting sounding track. This sound is perfected by NIN-T.R. So I makes perfect sense for NIN to cover this song. I think JD did great for their time, before the complex synth computer powered present we are now in. Music is Art and Art is a torch passed from each generation to the next. THINK!!
@forkboy84 I would have to listen to the original version again (since I have only heard it once), but as I remember there was quite a difference...one sounded like shit and one didn't. Anyway, Forkboy? Like the Lard song?
I did not even know this song was originally done by Joy Division until I heard their version ealier today...it was pretty bad. I'm normally not a fan of covers, but this NIN version is much better.
@ChlamydiaForecast You are entirely free to your opinion, but I do have to wonder about thinking much of the original. I mean there's hardly that much difference between the 2 versions.
@poilacoudre yeah.I kinda agree with you totally about NIN'S redition of this+I lobe NIN..its as flat as f*ck,lacks that raw emotion..JD's music was very influenced by the heavy industrial area they came from North Mancs..Ian Curtis..wow just a total waste,I've worked with ALOT of eplieptics+the anti epi drugs back then were so crude, massive side effects (I take Lamotrigine myself).Think his lifestyle.wanting to drink too+the drugs just didnt mix,+led to dreadful depression+desperation.cheers :)
@poilacoudre "this cover is flat, No feelings" ...gnarf..that`s why the songs is called dead souls...mwahaha...
To be honest, I think thats clearly a matter of taste..and the "flatness" is a stylistic device,maybe?..just a guess....
The shown rope is just the coverillustration of one of NINs albums (as you can see if you take a closer look at it), not even the one with this cover version. The very bad joke would be PatrickMSAs then...
I've been listening to this for the last 15 years, I remember when the crow came out in 1994 and NIN was still quite new...brilliant! Fuck I sound like an old cunt and I'm only 34...
This version has more feeling to me. Mainly because it's associated with Brandon Lee's tragic death portraying another man's death. The original is inspired, but this cover builds on it to create something even better.
I love IAN,...trent really made you feel like they were really calling him. You know Ian had those dead souls calling him..........i heard this song 13 years ago,..and i still love it!!!
It's not just an action flick maybe that's why. It is quite an emotional and artistic film, not just worth watching for the fight scenes and special effects.
nin from sister's friend's older sister who i idolized, half a decade later parents basement differnet state computer internet NIN album of all of them this song hit me hard, bad, never forgot, replayed, of all of them, never ever forgot this song, had no idea of joy division, yes-this song does justice, springboard into the entire universe (for me), of all this one, what a shocker, is the one i could not and will never forget

I think the guitars in this version sound a bit more polished than in the original.
and Trent sounds less haunted than Ian did, but the material is pretty much foolproof.
