Nicely made. May I suggest an addition to your tools if you are cutting a lot of sheet. Harbor Freight has a relatively inexpensive throatless shear that cuts through the type of brass sheet you are using like butter.
Hey David! Thanks for the video! Just finished making my own gauntlet, and although I'm not satisfied with it at all, it was awesome working on it and I've learned so so much! I'm going to create my own design now, and hopefully it'll turn out just as beautiful as yours. I'll upload a video eventually showing the movement and articulation, and I'd show a picture in the meantime, but it seems youtube won't let me. That, or you'll have a ton of duplicate comments in a few moments. ;D
@HouseRex great, glad you attempted it and enjoyed the process. Looking forward to seeing your pics and your video when you upload it. Let me know when you do.
vary nice vid man. love the explaining of your different home made tools and how you used them.. for a long time i have been wondering how to bend fingers and how knuckles where to be made. awesome.
@zeddarain Well thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed the video and if you need any help with your future projects I'll be happy to help however I can
Alright, so in my shop class I decided to use your design to make one of these. But I don't have the copper things, so far I have everything for the arm made and bent, but I'm not sure how to make the rivet holes that are stretched so the rivet can move so the glove can move on the hand plates, any tips?
@lexpederson for the elongated holes, drill several holes overlapping each other, and then go over the elongated holes with a small file to smooth it out and make it even
@HawkTK9401 Hard to say. I think I paid $30 for the gloves, spent about $60 in metal but I only made one. Probably $100 in metal if you are going to make two.
@Macashima You could try it, but I think if you put the resin over paper it will crack. If you could find a way to use fiberglass cloth, or any kind of cloth instead of paper, I think you'd have a better chance with it. Good luck and let me know how it goes
Although it is not like they used to do it back then, I sure enjoyed the video :) I liked the simply but effective and thus probably quick ways of making it. And it looks good too :) Great job;) !

@PandasterMaster The Anvil I got from Harbor Freight Tools, and the "brake" is actually known as a "seamer" which you can find in any Home Depot or hardware store near the downsputs/shingles/siding area. I know I call it a brake in the video but it's the wrong name.
@meatlova1234 ebay is the best place to find good deals. You can also get stuff from a hobby store, but usually not thick enough for armor. You can find metal thick enough for the fingerplates though in any hardware store.

@TheMortalkombatdude Sorry but I just don't have the time to make these. This single gauntlet took weeks of work, and if I tried to sell them, they would be so expensive that no one would buy them. It's just not worth doing.
My friend and I are wanting to make some armor from the game Dragon Age II. (Hawke's Rogue Champion Armor) We were wondering if you could look at some photos/screen-shots and give us some suggestions on how to go about starting and following through on our project. :)

@wizardjr23 sure you can send me your sketches I'd be happy to take a look. The cost of the metal was somethign like $60, as I got some "scrap" pieces from ebay, but what I got was brass. Brass is a little more expensive than steel. You can get stainless off of ebay fairly cheap, but I have only ever found regular steel in home improvement stores (that kind rusts). Anyway, good luck with your project and just jump right in. That's what I did.
@davidjguytondotcom hello great video, i have the template, watched video, and understand all parts except one. hope you can help . which holes dose the vambrace connect to is it the same hole as the connection hole for wrist 1 to 2 or do i guess and make new holes on wrist 2 plate? the template shows ony one set of holes . hope this makes sence thank you
@ShaneSchomburg The vambrace should have two holes (one per side) which should connect to the next part which should be wrist 2. That part should have a total of 4 holes (2 on each side). The vambrace should be riveted to the 2 rear holes.
Ok that makes sence, any other tips for a guy foolish enough to try this? Also considering making both a version of this and maybe go into further developments? (eg helmet, chest, ect)
@wizardjr23 My only advice is don't be afraid of working with metal. This was my very first attempt at metal and I did fine. Once you realize that metal is very malleable and forgiving, you'll be fine. As far as extra pieces...I was going to do a set of vambraces and greaves, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. This gauntlet is for the short film I made to promote my book, so I only needed one. I don't plan on making any more as it takes up way too much of my time.
Currently thinking about doing something like this for a personal portfolio project, but in saying that, for all the pieces you use to assemble the hand (joints, notches, ect) how did you plan it out? What types of measurements did you use?
For the building this video was fantastic, just hoping for further information into the development
@wizardjr23 Well, I just started by looking at how my own hand moves, where the bends are, etc. Then I got a glove and marked where all the knuckles and joints were right on the glove. Then I started cutting out paper shapes that would line up with those marks on the glove. I had to experiments quite a bit, but eventually I got a design that worked.
Hi me and my friend are doing one of these at school. We have cut out all parts but we need help with putting them together. The parts A1, A2, A3 and A4 and such, what are they for?
We are only 15 and 14 years old and from sweden so don't be to rude about our english please :P
@Bwxrx1 I would never insult your English. If you click under the video where it says "Show more" there are instructions written out for how to assemble the gauntlet.
hey im wondering something, would you be willing to make another one if someone were to pay you for it, and where did u get the sheet metal and how much did it cost?
@VideoMasher3000 No, I simply do not have the time to make them to sell. That's why I made a video so that anyone could try it. The sheet metal I got from Ebay. I think I paid about $60 for it
@Scalepurple Haha...no, it's not comfortable. It's heavy and it's hard to move your fingers very well. It's not TOO bad though....could be a lot worse I guess. I got the anvil from Harbor Freight Tools. I think it was like $50. One thing I should have done though was polish the striking surface. I used a sander with progressively finer grit to make the surface very flat. If you don't, it will leave marks in your metal when you hammer it. After the video, I polished mine
@MrRazasha if I had nothing else to do, and like $500 in sheet metal, yeah, probably. But I don't have the time to do that. This was made for a film, and all I needed was a single gauntlet.
Take some velvet and line the wrist and arm area. If you are lucky to have a good shop in your area. You can find some similar to tape. IE: 1 side is tape like and sticky and you can simply stick it on.
okay i have now sat and looked at the pdf file i have cut out but can still not find out what the pieces were there stand 1,2,3,4 on there they should go?
Me again, I've so far made all the parts, and got the fingers on the glove, looking great so far considering it's made out of the scrap tin from an old microwave. Only problem I'm having is that the hand/wrist parts don't seem to want to go together properly. Any chance you could take some high quality pictures of the hand parts please? So I can see how they go together better.
@feenixb1o7 I'll try to fit that into my weekend schedule for you. All of the parts will need to be bent and changed a bit to fit into the corresponding parts next to them. Every gauntlet will be different, no matter how close the parts are to each other. Even a left and right gauntlet made by the same person will have differences
I'm looking to make this but just the hand covering and in a darker metal could you recomend a metal to use or should I just use a silver metal and darken it somehow?
@EchoOddity I don't know of any dark metals, however if you use stainless steel, you can buy a chemical called "stainless steel blackener". I have never used it but it will darken stainless steel. You can also take a look at my tutorial on using paint to age metal. It works very well, super cheap, and even if the paint wears off in some areas, it looks very natural as if battle-worn. I used black paint and brown paint (for a rusty look) but you can skip the brown if you don't like the rust
Beautiful! Truly amazing. I printed off our design, just putting it together now. Little confused about how some bits go together... do the numbers get lower as the get closer to the fingers?
@feenixb1o7 If you click below the video where it says "Show More" there's pretty good instructions written out for assembly. If that doesn't answer your questions let me know
@davidjguytondotcom Haha, so sorry. Should have read it, perfect instructions. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I'll upload a video when I've made it.
This may have been asked/answered/stated before, but what was the reason you chose that type of glove? Where did you get it from?
@feenixb1o7 You mean the actual leather glove I used? I wanted to use a real leather glove for durability, but I needed it to be as thin as possible so that I could keep the design elegant and not bulky. I got the gloves from one of those motorcycle stores that sell boots and jackets, etc. They were expensive...about $25
@davidjguytondotcom Ah okay thank you. Last question, where did you get the rivets from and what are their exact measurements please. I am very serious about building a pair, I already have a scrap steel one cut out, just need it riveting together. Thanks.
@feenixb1o7 I honestly forget the exact size of the rivets. My sister had a set of them that she let me use that came in 4 sizes. They are commonly referred to as "leather rivets" and you can get them on ebay pretty cheap. I used two different lengths. The lengths you will need may be different than mine, depending on how tight or loose you make your design.
@SomeKnowsLikes haha I have been asked many times to do that but I just don't have the time. That's part of the reason I made the video...so that others can jump in and try it themelves.
I'm working on miniature armor for a project and I was wondering- where could I get tiny rivets or a substitute for tiny rivets? Any idea? I'd appreciate it. :) this video blew me away. :)
@DunpealChild he only thing I can think of is to make real rivets from wire. You can see me do it at 8:23 in this video. You'll just have to use very thin gauge wire for it. You also don't have to use copper like I did. You can use just about any metal wire or rod you can find, but I suggest something softer than steel. Being miniature, it'll be tough work, but it'll be worth it. Good luck and please send me pics of your project!
@moviemaker195 Thanks! I can't remember how many hours but it took a few weeks to wrap up. I did it in my free time for an hour or two a day. I could do it faster now that I know what I am doing. I was winging it

i can't seem to find any black leather gloves like yours. for the parts hand 1 and hand 2, do we cut out that slide groove? are the rivets there supposed to be loose enough to slide?
@TheFinalformsora Yeah you need to cut out the slot like I did if you want to be able to move your hand well. Yes, make sure the rivets there are loose enough so that the parts can move. For gloves, look for motorcycle gloves or maybe even driver's gloves. They are leather but thinner than your average leather gloves and make for a better gauntlet
@chomsary I am not exactly sure. I think I spent about $60 on brass, and $25 on the gloves. The rest of the stuff I already had, except the anvil. I had brass left over, but I only made one gauntlet and not two.
Wow this is an awesome tutorial and very helpful to me as I have been looking for a good gauntlet tutorial for my half warrior in my book and film series, never at dawn!
Thank you for helping me and good luck in your future :)
@Zipp2010 I really can't remember...but I think the brass cost me about $60 (I didn't use it all though) The gloves were like $25. The other stuff I had already, except the anvil, which was like $50 I think.
Hi! I would love to see or know how you actually attached the metal to the glove. I see you are clamping things in, but how did you figure out where to make the holes to connect it to the glove?? I'm sorry, I would love to know more in detail since I am making something similar to this but not sure how to attach it to a glove or something formed to my hand as I am making the comic book character Witchblade. She wears a gauntlet.
@blytheavila66 First make your parts and drill the holes for the rivets. Put on your glove and place the parts on your fingers. Then use a marker (I used a gold metallic marker) and mark the spot through the hole on the glove. Remove the metal part and then poke a hole in the glove at the mark. Put a rivet through the glove from the inside, then put your part back on and clamp on the top piece of the rivet. Do your fingers first, then your arm. Do all the parts in the same manner
@1111wertwert Sorry but no. This was just made for a film prop and it takes me far too long to make to try to sell them. However, I am running a contest to win this one right now.
@2good4u1914 All of the parts are seen here in the video, and in the description under the video where it says "show more" there is a link to a free PDF file that you can print for a template. Detailed assembly instructions are also in the description
This is an amazing video, and you sir, you are my favorite narrator.
I plan on doing this but one question. In your jig, how thick are the plywood spacers? and any ideas on the measurements of the pipes? Thank you very much.
@mtm101097 Well thank you very much! Glad you like it. The plywood spacers I used were 1/4 inch I think, although it's not all that important since you'll have to beat them some with a hammer afterwards because you most likely won't get it to bend all the way perfect in your jig. I forget the pipes' measurements, but they are gas pipes, so find one close to your finger size (with a glove on), and then also buy one that is one size larger to cut in half.
thanks for the tutorial im going to be changing yours a little to be making a demon claw and completely out of paper but still thanks for the tutorial
thank you so much for this video! i've been looking for tutorials for a while but this by far excedes all of them. and you gave us a blueprint. awesome! thank you again.

Secondly, If it was posterboard what kind and where can I buy it?
Thanks.

@Boundless95 Yes it's posterboard. You can get it at any office supply store like Office Depot or Staples, or any art supply store like Michaels

Nicely made. May I suggest an addition to your tools if you are cutting a lot of sheet. Harbor Freight has a relatively inexpensive throatless shear that cuts through the type of brass sheet you are using like butter.

Hi me and my friend are doing one of these at school. We have cut out all parts but we need help with putting them together. The parts A1, A2, A3 and A4 and such, what are they for?
We are only 15 and 14 years old and from sweden so don't be to rude about our english please :P

and then i thought i need to make one like that myself
do you have any ideas if it would look good if it has a like a sort of scratched look on it?
MGbeatboxTV 4 months ago
@MGbeatboxTV You mean like brushed metal? Or like battle damage? I honestly think that both would look awesome.
davidjguytondotcom 4 months ago
hey im wondering something, would you be willing to make another one if someone were to pay you for it, and where did u get the sheet metal and how much did it cost?
VideoMasher3000 4 months ago
@VideoMasher3000 No, I simply do not have the time to make them to sell. That's why I made a video so that anyone could try it. The sheet metal I got from Ebay. I think I paid about $60 for it
davidjguytondotcom 4 months ago
Cool. is it comfortable? and where did you get your anvil? I have been tryingto find one that size.
Scalepurple 4 months ago
@Scalepurple Haha...no, it's not comfortable. It's heavy and it's hard to move your fingers very well. It's not TOO bad though....could be a lot worse I guess. I got the anvil from Harbor Freight Tools. I think it was like $50. One thing I should have done though was polish the striking surface. I used a sander with progressively finer grit to make the surface very flat. If you don't, it will leave marks in your metal when you hammer it. After the video, I polished mine
davidjguytondotcom 4 months ago
@davidjguytondotcom thanks, i didn't know about the polishing
Scalepurple 4 months ago
wow great job!! that looks amazing! do u think u can make an entire armor set? body included?
MrRazasha 4 months ago
@MrRazasha if I had nothing else to do, and like $500 in sheet metal, yeah, probably. But I don't have the time to do that. This was made for a film, and all I needed was a single gauntlet.

Where did you buy your rivets from?
NugAndYeb 4 months ago
@NugAndYeb I didn't buy them, they were my sisters and she let me use them. She got them off ebay I think. They are called "leather rivets"

Take some velvet and line the wrist and arm area. If you are lucky to have a good shop in your area. You can find some similar to tape. IE: 1 side is tape like and sticky and you can simply stick it on.

Thanks again.
feenixb1o7 4 months ago
@feenixb1o7 I'll try to fit that into my weekend schedule for you. All of the parts will need to be bent and changed a bit to fit into the corresponding parts next to them. Every gauntlet will be different, no matter how close the parts are to each other. Even a left and right gauntlet made by the same person will have differences
davidjguytondotcom 4 months ago
I'm looking to make this but just the hand covering and in a darker metal could you recomend a metal to use or should I just use a silver metal and darken it somehow?
EchoOddity 4 months ago
@EchoOddity I don't know of any dark metals, however if you use stainless steel, you can buy a chemical called "stainless steel blackener". I have never used it but it will darken stainless steel. You can also take a look at my tutorial on using paint to age metal. It works very well, super cheap, and even if the paint wears off in some areas, it looks very natural as if battle-worn. I used black paint and brown paint (for a rusty look) but you can skip the brown if you don't like the rust

Beautiful! Truly amazing. I printed off our design, just putting it together now. Little confused about how some bits go together... do the numbers get lower as the get closer to the fingers?
feenixb1o7 5 months ago
@feenixb1o7 If you click below the video where it says "Show More" there's pretty good instructions written out for assembly. If that doesn't answer your questions let me know
davidjguytondotcom 5 months ago
@davidjguytondotcom Haha, so sorry. Should have read it, perfect instructions. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I'll upload a video when I've made it.
This may have been asked/answered/stated before, but what was the reason you chose that type of glove? Where did you get it from?
feenixb1o7 5 months ago
@feenixb1o7 You mean the actual leather glove I used? I wanted to use a real leather glove for durability, but I needed it to be as thin as possible so that I could keep the design elegant and not bulky. I got the gloves from one of those motorcycle stores that sell boots and jackets, etc. They were expensive...about $25
davidjguytondotcom 5 months ago
@davidjguytondotcom Ah okay thank you. Last question, where did you get the rivets from and what are their exact measurements please. I am very serious about building a pair, I already have a scrap steel one cut out, just need it riveting together. Thanks.
feenixb1o7 5 months ago
@feenixb1o7 I honestly forget the exact size of the rivets. My sister had a set of them that she let me use that came in 4 sizes. They are commonly referred to as "leather rivets" and you can get them on ebay pretty cheap. I used two different lengths. The lengths you will need may be different than mine, depending on how tight or loose you make your design.

Hey there.
I'm working on miniature armor for a project and I was wondering- where could I get tiny rivets or a substitute for tiny rivets? Any idea? I'd appreciate it. :) this video blew me away. :)
DunpealChild 5 months ago
@DunpealChild he only thing I can think of is to make real rivets from wire. You can see me do it at 8:23 in this video. You'll just have to use very thin gauge wire for it. You also don't have to use copper like I did. You can use just about any metal wire or rod you can find, but I suggest something softer than steel. Being miniature, it'll be tough work, but it'll be worth it. Good luck and please send me pics of your project!

i can't seem to find any black leather gloves like yours. for the parts hand 1 and hand 2, do we cut out that slide groove? are the rivets there supposed to be loose enough to slide?
TheFinalformsora 5 months ago
@TheFinalformsora Yeah you need to cut out the slot like I did if you want to be able to move your hand well. Yes, make sure the rivets there are loose enough so that the parts can move. For gloves, look for motorcycle gloves or maybe even driver's gloves. They are leather but thinner than your average leather gloves and make for a better gauntlet

how much did it cost to make the gauntlet???
chomsary 5 months ago
@chomsary I am not exactly sure. I think I spent about $60 on brass, and $25 on the gloves. The rest of the stuff I already had, except the anvil. I had brass left over, but I only made one gauntlet and not two.

@Zipp2010 I really can't remember...but I think the brass cost me about $60 (I didn't use it all though) The gloves were like $25. The other stuff I had already, except the anvil, which was like $50 I think.
davidjguytondotcom 5 months ago
She wears a gauntlet.
blytheavila66 6 months ago
@blytheavila66 First make your parts and drill the holes for the rivets. Put on your glove and place the parts on your fingers. Then use a marker (I used a gold metallic marker) and mark the spot through the hole on the glove. Remove the metal part and then poke a hole in the glove at the mark. Put a rivet through the glove from the inside, then put your part back on and clamp on the top piece of the rivet. Do your fingers first, then your arm. Do all the parts in the same manner

This is an amazing video, and you sir, you are my favorite narrator.
I plan on doing this but one question. In your jig, how thick are the plywood spacers? and any ideas on the measurements of the pipes? Thank you very much.
mtm101097 7 months ago
@mtm101097 Well thank you very much! Glad you like it. The plywood spacers I used were 1/4 inch I think, although it's not all that important since you'll have to beat them some with a hammer afterwards because you most likely won't get it to bend all the way perfect in your jig. I forget the pipes' measurements, but they are gas pipes, so find one close to your finger size (with a glove on), and then also buy one that is one size larger to cut in half.
